What Services Do AC Installation Pros Near You Offer?

Often carried out by HVAC contractors, air conditioning installation processes differ depending on the system and layout of the house. There are several different types, and you can discuss with your preferred installer what installation will look like in your home.

Here are some of the most common services air conditioning installation workers provide:

  • Central Air Conditioning Installation: Installing a ducted system that cools an entire home through existing or new ductwork.
  • Ductless Mini-Split Installation: Mounting wall units and an outdoor compressor for homes without ductwork, ideal for older homes or additions.
  • Window or Through-the-Wall Unit Installation: Fitting self-contained units suited for apartments, condos, or single-room cooling needs.

You don’t have to make loads of effort finding the right AC repair pro anymore. Just post your project to HomeStars and we’ll match you with available pros in your area who are ready to work.

How Much Does Air Conditioning Installation Near You Cost?

Air conditioning installation costs vary depending on the type of system, the size of your home, and the complexity of the job. Labour rates typically range from $75 to $150 per hour, with most installations taking between 4 and 16 hours.

Here are some common AC installation service costs:

  • Central Air Conditioning costs Installation: $3,500 to $7,500, including the unit and installation labour
  • Ductless Mini-Split Installation: $2,000 to $5,000 per zone, with multi-zone systems running higher
  • Window or Through-the-Wall Unit Installation: $300 to $1,000, including the unit and basic installation

HomeStars tip: Make sure to get everything written down in an itemized quote. This avoids misunderstandings and supports transparency and clear communication for both you and the contractor.

Why Should You Hire A Pro for AC Installation vs. DIY?

While tasks like clearing debris around an outdoor unit or replacing a filter can generally be done on your own, for most air conditioning installation projects, it's usually best to hire a professional.

Here are a few reasons why:

  • Safety and refrigerant handling: Working with refrigerants requires proper certification and handling equipment. Improper handling is hazardous and illegal without the appropriate credentials.

  • Correct sizing: An improperly sized unit will struggle to cool your home efficiently, leading to higher energy bills and premature wear on the system.

  • Warranty protection: Most manufacturers require professional installation to keep the warranty valid. A DIY install could void your coverage entirely.

  • Code compliance: Air conditioning installations must meet local building codes and electrical standards. A pro ensures the work passes inspection and is done to standard.

Hiring a pro to help you with your AC installation ensures safety, efficiency, and compliance. Post your project on HomeStars now to ensure your indoor comfort this summer!

What to Ask Before Hiring an AC Installation Pro Near You

When hiring for AC installation near you, asking the right questions can help you make an informed decision before choosing who you work with.

Here are a few questions you can ask before committing:

Do you carry liability insurance and workers’ compensation coverage?

This protects you if something goes wrong during the job or a worker is injured on your property. Don’t hesitate to ask for proof.

Do you offer a written warranty, and what does it cover?

A warranty gives you peace of mind once the project is completed. Make sure you understand the difference between the manufacturer's equipment warranty and the contractor's labour warranty, and how long each one lasts.

Do I need a permit, and will you handle obtaining it? In most cases, permits are not required for straightforward replacements or like-for-like swaps, but they often are required for new AC installations, especially when electrical work or new ductwork is involved.

A professional contractor will be familiar with local rules. Ask whether they handle obtaining the permit if you need one, and if so, whether it’s included in their quote or a separate charge.

What size unit do you recommend for my home, and how did you determine that?

A properly sized unit is key to efficiency and comfort. This helps you understand whether the contractor is doing a proper load calculation or just guessing.

What brands do you carry, and why do you recommend them?

This gives you insight into the quality of equipment being offered and whether the contractor has flexibility to match your budget and needs. Different brands vary significantly in efficiency ratings, noise levels, and long-term reliability, so it's worth understanding your options.

How will you handle the removal and disposal of my old unit?

If your project involves replacing an old unit, not all contractors include disposal in their quote, so it's worth clarifying upfront to avoid unexpected costs. Ask for confirmation that old refrigerants will be properly recovered and disposed of, as the contractor is responsible for meeting environmental regulations.

FAQ: Your Questions About Air Conditioning Installation Answered

How do I choose the right air conditioning system for my home?

The best system depends on factors like whether your home has existing ductwork, the size and layout of your space, and your budget. An AC installation contractor should assess your home before making a recommendation, as there is no one-size-fits-all answer when it comes to air conditioning.

HomeStars can connect you with air con installation pros who can make suggestions based on your needs, your budget, and your property’s layout.

Do I need to be home during the installation?

It's generally a good idea to be home, at least at the start and end of the job. This allows you to ask questions, review the work, and sign off on the installation before the contractor leaves.

Will my home be left clean after the installation?

Most contractors will clean up after themselves, but it's worth confirming this beforehand. Installation can involve drilling, cutting, and running refrigerant lines, which can create dust and debris.

How do I know what size air conditioner I need?

Sizing is based on factors like your home's square footage, ceiling height, insulation, and sun exposure. A contractor should perform a proper load calculation rather than relying on square footage alone. AC installation pros on HomeStars can advise on sizing for your new unit.

How soon can I use my air conditioner after installation?

In most cases, the system can be tested and used the same day. Your contractor should run a full system check before leaving to confirm everything is working properly.

Will AC installation damage my walls or ceilings?

Some installations, particularly ductless mini-splits or systems requiring new ductwork, may involve drilling or minor wall work. You can find an AC installation pro on HomeStars who can walk you through what to expect before starting so there are no surprises.
