Question 1

When should my air conditioning be repaired vs. replaced?

Accepted Answer

A common rule of thumb is to consider replacement if the cost of the repair exceeds 50% of the value of a new unit, or if your system is more than 10 to 15 years old. If you're unsure, get a second opinion from another contractor through HomeStars to make sure you're getting the most informed recommendation possible.

Question 2

Do I need to be home during work?

Accepted Answer

It's generally a good idea to be home for the duration of the repair, as the technician may need access to different areas of your home and may have questions along the way. Being present also gives you the opportunity to ask questions and see the work firsthand before signing off.

Question 3

Will my home be left clean after AC repairs are completed?

Accepted Answer

Air conditioning repairs can involve working with refrigerant lines, electrical components, and dusty internal parts, which can create some mess around the unit and surrounding area. Most contractors will clean up after themselves, but it's worth confirming this beforehand, and laying down a drop cloth or moving nearby items before work begins is never a bad idea.

Question 4

How soon can I use my air conditioner once work is done?

Accepted Answer

In most cases, your system can be tested and used immediately after the repair is finished. Your contractor should run a full system check before leaving to confirm everything is working as expected, so don't hesitate to ask if this hasn't been offered.

Question 5

How often should my air conditioner be serviced to avoid repairs?

Accepted Answer

Most manufacturers recommend having your system professionally serviced once a year, ideally in the spring before the cooling season begins. Regular maintenance can catch small issues before they become costly repairs and help extend the life of your system. Search HomeStars to find a local contractor who offers seasonal AC maintenance.
