Want toxic mold in your Home? Hire Home Depot

Warning: This is a horror story.

In April 2012, Home Depot installed a new kitchen in my home that I had previously purchased from them. I have been happy with the kitchen and minor issues were fixed promptly. What I did not know at the time was that 3 three inch screws were used to attach an upper and lower cabinet right into a sewage plumbing stack behind the wall.

Fast forward to February 2014. My 19 year old daughter got very ill over a period of 6 weeks. After many tests she was diagnosed with a rare respiratory condition. After months of treatment she got better but continues to be plagued with skin, digestive, and headache problems. She was away from the house between fall 2014 and spring 2015 returning to the house in 2015.

For myself I experienced digestive, fatigue, and insomnia problems from 2013 onwards. In 2014 and 2015 I caught flu and colds constantly. I developed severe allergy symptoms that did not improve despite the season.

In October 2015 I noticed some dampness and staining at the bottom of the basement stairs carpet that did not go away. The basement was finished before I bought the home. I called in a plumber to investigate. As he started removing drywall the mold could be seen. The plumber kept investigating until he uncovered the source of the leaking and mold to be 3 three inch screws in the sewage plumbing stack behind the kitchen cabinets.

I immediately contacted my insurance and Home Depot. I even went directly to the store I dealt with and emailed the customer rep pictures of the damage. My next step was to find a mold remediation company and mold inspector. I found both on homestars. We left the home and it took a month for the remediation to be complete. The mold levels in the entire home air space were chaetomium and stachybotrys both elevated. Commonly referred to as toxic mold plus other types of nasty mold.

It is now February 2016. So far I have spent 10s of thousands of dollars on remediation and I haven't even got to the reconstruction part. Numerous visits to medical specialists for myself and kids. This is the response I got from Home Depot on November 18.0, 2015
"You may direct your legal representative to complete kitchens, who is investigating the claim you have presented. Home Depot is no longer involved in this matter"

I have no idea who their subs contractors are or care because I hired Home Depot. They have managed to give out my private phone number and email address to their so called sub contractors. With one of them I was being harassed via phone and email to the point I retained a lawyer. With the other one their insurance company is phoning me to get in contact with the sub contractor.

I did warn you that this was a horror story. The bottom line is to never hire Home Depot to install anything because they do not stand behind the work or care about their customers.

Approximate cost of services:
$30,000.00
