Hardwood Flooring

I purchased hardwood flooring for my new home from Vintage Hardwood Flooring and I am very happy with the quality and craftmanship. I receive a lot of compliments on the hardwood flooring from family and friends when they come to my home. I have a dog and I am quite satisfied with the durability of the floor. Would recommend this company and their products.

Hardwood floors in my new house

I purchased brand new house from CountryWide and builder used Vintage Flooring hardwood(Pioneered Series, V-Pearl finish). I was stupid enough to pay extra to get hardwood throughout. Huge mistake. I am very, very unhappy with the quality of this hardwood, it dents and scratches easily and finish is peeling on more than few boards already. Do yourself a favour and do not buy from this company.

Bedroom & Hallway Floors

Horrible poor quality wood. Purchased Red Oak with a semi-gloss finish and there is hardly a finish on it so the floor is so delicate like eggshells because if you drop the slightest thing on it, it will have a dent and it will scratch! I took a sample of hardwood from two family members, one is oak, not sure what type and the other is red oak. Took a can and banged on the one oak and didn't even dent. Did the same on the other red oak and it made a very slight dent. Did the same on my Vintage Red Oak and it was completely destroyed with a deep dent. I accidentally dropped the electric toothbrush when I was moving it and another major dent. Dents/scratches even as it was being installed. Now when I'm moving around things in a closet, I put a thick area rug underneath in fear of dropping something. Good thing that I will use another more hardwood from another more reputable company for the main floor hardwood. Major mistake in using Vintage. Please do not buy from them. Family member used another brand and it didn't even dent with banging a can of tomato paste to it. Don't buy Vintage.

Company Response

We’re sorry to hear about your bad experience with our flooring. Vintage uses only Northern Red Oak ( Appalachian ) which is the hardest Red Oak available in in North America.

We would be happy to send a representative out to meet with you and review your concerns directly.

Sincerely,
Vintage Hardwood Flooring

Jatoba Harwood

An absolute nightmare, this company will find the consumer at fault before looking at any problems with their product. I was so happy with the type of flooring I ordered and hoped that I would later buy more to continue the Jatoba Harwood throughout the three levels of our house. It was more expensive than other flooring, but I was trying to find a Canadian company that appeared to have regard for the environment when harvesting the raw material.

Within two weeks of the install, the floor immediately started to show cracks. I contacted my dealer here in Winnipeg, MB (The Floor Show). They came out twice then called Vintage Flooring who investigated the issue for the next two years. After two short, biased , and dismissive visits, Vintage disallowed my warranty based on an "unusual cold Winnipeg winter". The representative is also the sales rep for these floors, and was more concerned with the negative reviews they had received online than dealing with my floors.

There is now a total of 110 planks of the 1271 square feet of flooring in place and the floor looks like a crackled mess.

In addition, the floor has such a soft finish that it shows scratches and the the top urethane layer of the floor is starting to separate in some spots. These scratches are superficial and were caused due to the soft finishing layer of the floor. The coating appears to be separating in places where the planks have not been exposed to water, contrary to Vintages findings.

The warranty was declined based on the company's assumption that the humidity in the house was below the suggested levels, even though low levels in the flooring was detected a year ago but still within their suggested range. I thought this would be an issue with exotic floors and cold arid conditions in Winnipeg but was reassured this would definately not be an problem. I was told to put in a humidifier prior to the floors being installed which I did. You would think that if you follow the manufacturer & dealers suggestion for care, there should be no problem. In any case, the low humidity was never confirmed at our house but just assumed to be a factor.

The timing of the floor preparation at the factory is suspect in my opinion. We were told that there was a three months wait for the floor to be delivered since the raw material was not available. One week after, we were told that they suddenly did have enough floor to deliver to us for the entire house. They production process alone should take over two weeks. I believe that these floors were not adequately processed due to the short delivery time and that is why we have so many cracks and very poor urethane adhesion and protection of the wood.

I do not believe that the warranty on these very expensive floors has ever been successfully challenged from conversations with the salesmen. It appears that the homeowner has always been blamed when it comes to trouble with the floors and no claim has been paid.

I have contacted the BBB to try to deal with this situation but have had no response from Vintage Flooring to date. The Dealer "the Home Show" no longer promotes the Vintage flooring, but they are not taking any responsibility for the handling of my concerns.

To top it off, the company has "updated" their warranty to be more restricted and noted that all products will be reviewed under this warranty regardless of when the floor was purchased. Yes, this was done without disclosure to us who had out in a claim prior to the effective date of the Warranty.

I would ask you seriously reconsider purchasing from a Vintage and save yourself a lot of heartache.

Company Response

We are unhappy when customers experience disappointment with our floors. We know about your situation and attempts to resolve this issue with our customer, The Floor Show.

Winters in Canada can create very dry conditions in the home. Any floors exposed to less than 25% relative humidity for an extended period of time, will experience stress. Very hard exotic species like your Jatoba floor are especially vulnerable to stress cracks in extreme dry condition. It is for this reason that we state clearly in our warranty to maintain humidity controls in home above 25%. Our warranty also states that damage due to water or sharp objects is not covered.

We are in discussion with The Floor Show on resolving your claim and will be in contact you very shortly.

Sincerely,
Vintage Hardwood Flooring

Hardwood flooring

Purchased Vintage Fumed Old Oak from a flooring reseller for 1800sqft. Many long pieces which was great. Due to the nature of the fume process, some pieces had a large white spot. Was not expecting how stark it looked but it adds to the character which we were looking for. Came out beautiful.

Some pieces (very few) were not fully straight and had to be pried into place before installing.

living room

I bought 220 sq ft of Vintage Red Oak Pewter Estate, a deep black colour. The professional installer, that I hired, told me as soon as he looked at the wood that it was was flawed. It was chipped and the colour was coming off in some areas. He installed the best wood he could find in the 11 boxes that I had.I called Speers Paint in Oakville, the retailer where I purchased it, and they told me to call the company. The company sent a rep to my home.He immediately blamed me for the problem advising me that I was cleaning the floor with the wrong cleaner(Pledge Floor Care)and that my home was too humid.I told him that I had been using this on other wood floors for years without any problems at all.I have a heat exchanger so the air in my house is always fresh and never too humid. When I pointed out the chips on most of the grooves in the flooring, he said that this amounted to less than 10% of the total area so the company was not liable for these flaws.I only requested an extra box of flooring to compensate for the flawed product that I purchased.I was denied this and simply provided with a black wood stain and a paste to apply over the defective areas. I have to apply it every year or two to make the floor look half decent.I sent an e mail to the owner,Emmanuel , outlining my problem but he never even gave me the courtesy of a reply.I returned to the retailer and they asked me to supply some samples of the defective wood.I was told they would send it to Vintage for testing.I called back a few weeks later and was told that Vintage found the wood was not defective.I asked for the samples back and was advised that the company never returned them to the retailer and I would not be getting them back.Needless to say ,I will never purchase Vintage Flooring again.

Since the story was printed in Homestars I was immediately contacted by Gary, who is the Regional Account manager for vintage flooring. He handles the Speers flooring account where I originally purchased the hardwood. He advised me that he wanted to investigate the issues that I raised in my original post.I sent him all of the original e mails and written correspondence dating back to 2005.We had a few conversations on the phone.I was then contacted by Peter, owner of Speers Flooring,Oakville,Ontario. We arranged for a mutually convenient time and he visited my house which is about 40 kms from his store. He did an on site inspection of my floor which is now almost 11 years old. Peter provided me with cash in lieu of 1 box of flooring(20 sq ft) I was also given a quart of Vintage stain that matches my wood and a touch up kit.I purchased 2 bottles of Vintage Floor Cleaner and a mop applicator.I am quite pleased with the response from both Vintage and Speers since the floor was installed in 2004.A post on Home Stars really got the ball rolling.Initially I had a difficult time getting a favourable response from Vintage but I am quite happy with the ultimate results.Thankyou Speers Flooring,Vintage Flooring and Home Stars
