Electrical panel replacement/service upgrade.

They were prompt, friendly and seemed to be going the extra mile with the work. We can't give them a 10 because the connection to the outside wasn't inspected and the weather-proof caps put in place. As a consequence, some time later we lost half the power to the house. When Hydro came, they ordered an inspection and fixed the problem. The inspector didn't charge us anything because he said Piper was supposed to call in the inspection in the first place. He also gave the impression that he would be taking up the matter with Piper and make them pay in more ways than one.

New Panel and misc.

Tom is a very skilled, knowledgable and courteous pro.
How'd I find Tom? Well it was through this site. I first looked at all the contractors with hundreds of reviews and even tried calling them, but only got an answering machine. And then I thought, why not go the opposite route. Find the guy who doesn't have a ton of reviews which is where I found Tom. But because each review was so positive I decided to give him a call. I wouldn't be disappointed.

First, thank God our wiring wasn't aluminum. Everything was copper. After going through our home and deciding together what should and could be done, he sent an estimate that he stuck to.

Here's the work he did for us in our 50 yr old Scarborough 2 story.

--ditched our fuse panel and got breakers. Took care of all permits.
--went through the whole house to trouble shoot any issues.
--installed pool pump timer next to panel
--correctly rewired our garage.
--installed GFI outdoor switches.
--rewired 'switch to plug' in bedroom, so only one plug is affected by the switch, not both plugs. Very helpful so lamp goes on/off, but clock doesn't.
--installed two new basement drop ceiling fluorescent light fixtures.
--fished wire into two upstairs bathrooms and installed GFI plugs in both.
--dedicated fridge to a single breaker.
--added plug for our tankless water heater.

I think that's about it.

His work was impeccable and I would recommend him to anyone. In fact, I already have.

initial rewiring of home, renovations requiring electrical work, various electrical issues in all homes we've owned

We have known Tom Piper for about 12 years when we called him to assist us with electrical issues in our first home. We found Tom completely by accident in the Yellow Pages in 2000. We have only used Tom since meeting him and I have referred him to everyone I know who needs an Electrician. Besides being a such a nice person, he is a consummate professional who is dependable; on time; conscientious; honest; follows-up; responds immediately to calls/pages; and, spends whatever length of time is needed (for the work or a consultation). We are always working with a tight budget and Tom completely repsects that, gives his opinion on what can be done, and always provides options should something arise unexpectedly (we live in an old house). Our costs do not exceed our budget when working with Tom. Once the Electrical Safety Authority Inspectors hear it is Tom Piper who has done the work, they make a comment about not needing to look any further (though they do complete a full inspection!). I quite honestly cannot recommend Tom highly enough to anyone needing electrical work done. I won't ever call anyone else.

Electrical wiring

It was just lucky that the real estate agent who helped us purchase our little money pit also gave us Tom Piper's name. The 80+ year-old home was chock full o' knob and tube (amongst other problems) and only a complete re-wiring would eventually bring things up to code. That was five years ago and we've been using Tom throughout our renos. He's pretty much done the entire house now, including our most recent work on a complete kitchen upgrade. We've done fixtures, switches, a new panel and even a couple of heated floors. Tom is honest, straightforward and a pleasure to deal with. Plus, he's quite fond of our insane dog, which is a bonus. He even came out one time -- on the weekend, no less -- to check on a problem that turned out to have nothing to do with his work (it was a fried furnace connection). We've deal with a lot of contractors and Tom's name is always at the top of the list of people I'll recommend.

electrical wiring

We have been using Piper electric since first becoming homebuyers in 1992. Our first home was a small semidetached bungalow in the Golden Triangle area of East York, dating from about the 1920's. Our initial call to Piper Electric was a result of a random review of the Yellow Pages. It turned out to be a fun coincidence. When Tom first came to assess the job we were hoping to have done he noticed the signature of the electrician who had done the last major wiring in the house in the 1940's-- it was his dad's signature. This began a long relationship with a very dependable, professional who does great work. We have subsequently referred him to all of our friends who needed electrical work done. They have all, without exception been very happy with the work he has done and they have recommended him to their friends. Tom has now relocated to Richmond Hill, however he still does work in the city, as he is about to rewire our current home (haven't owned a house yet that didn't start out with knob and tube wiring). A great guy who does a great job is hard to come by, take our word for it, hire Tom.
