Painted Foyer and Staircase Railing and Spindles

Paint used for the staircase railing/spindles was not the right type for such a high-wear area (Sherwin William rep later confirmed my suspicion). After 2 months you could use finger nail on a spindle and paint easily came off. At this point it should be fully cured.

Update 3/1/23 - Painting company re-visited house and re-painted staircase railing/spindles with a different kind of paint. It has been several months since that time and results are much better (paint coating is much more durable and damage resistant). Issue appears to be resolved.

Approximate cost of services:
$3,000.00

Company Response

For Staircases we have historically used Oil based Products: Emerald Urethane. We were introduced to a zero VOC product by our paint company, Sherwin Williams, for staircases. As we have our customers' long-term health in mind, we are always very keen on using VOC free products. At this time all of our products used for walls, trims, and ceilings are ZERO VOC certified. We used the new product for Brad: unfortunately, the new product did not provide the desired adhesion; although, it seemed to perform well in our internal trials.

We typically wait for four weeks after painting for the product to cure fully. Upon subsequent examination, with our Sherwin Williams paint rep, we were not satisfied with the final result and decided to repaint the staircase with our traditional product.

Our traditional product has held well and Brad is happy: MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.

Painted Foyer and Staircase Railing and Spindles

Disappointed with interior painting work performed.

Paint used for the staircase railing/spindles was not the right type for such a high-wear area (Sherwin William rep later confirmed my suspicion). It has been over 2 months and you can use finger nail on a spindle and paint easily comes off. At this point it should be fully cured. Questionable surface preparation prior to applying paint as well. This is the gift that keeps on giving, as I will be touching up the spindles for as long as I'm in this house.

In addition to the staircase railing/spindles issue, the following was also noted after work was completed:
-Various dents not filled/prepared properly prior to painting (lack of wall preparations)
-Overall lack of attention to detail
-Resistance to correcting issues

Will never use this company to do painting work again (nor recommend to others).
