Movers

I hired Kingsway Van Lines for move from Edmonton to Vancouver in September 2014. I researched a bunch of options, online, and emailed with their seemingly competent rep Liz, many times before commiting to the company.

I was promised a 6 day delivery time and quoted about $1400 for a small move. 6 days after they picked up my goods, no phone call. So I called the office, no answer. I left a voicemail. And so this went for a few days. I finally get someone on the line and ask where my things are. They don't know. They'll call dispatch. 3 days later... they still don't know. Fast forward to 2 weeks after my stuff has left Edmonton. I call, they've found the truck. Can they deliver it? No. It's not in Vancouver yet. Ugh.

They do have a quote for me tho! And it's about 3900lbs. So should be about $4000. WHAT?? So I question the bill. No one can give me an answer as to why. "It's by weight of your goods" they say. I tell them repeatedly, there is no way that my stuff weighs more than 2000 lbs. The price should not exceed around $1500.

More days go by....So they weight it again. Oh whoops, its actually 3600 lbs. Riiiight... Knowing it is not anywhere close to that weight, I advise them I will find a way to weigh the goods myself, if need be, it's wrong.

They finally offer to have me go to a warehouse, where my things are now located. And they are not going to deliver until I pay the bill. I watch some workers put a crate, holding my goods, on a scale. It comes out to around 2000 lbs. MAGICAL!! When they're being watched, my items lose half their weight?? I must learn how that happens!! The bill was then corrected the proper weight.

Geez. Long story but a ton learned in the process. I finally got my things delivered. My coffee table was smashed in half, many boxes were crushed. Anything with movers wrap on it had half the wrap pulled off and ripped. Many items have sizable dings, scratches and dents. I actually had someone elses bed slats and curtain rod mixed in with my stuff as well. The delivery guys would not give me a copy of the contract. I called the office a few times and no one returned my call. I asked for the manager's manager, who was never in office and never returned my calls either.

NEVER USE THIS COMPANY. They are outright con artists. So long as they get your money, they don't care what happened to your things or how long it takes for you to get them. HORRIBLE experience and I tell everyone I know to never use them.

Moving

Let's start with the positives: 1.Kingsway admin staff were a pleasure to deal with. Communication and liaison were good and enquiries responded to efficiently. 2. Removal crew picking up our goods to go into store (Jason and Mark) were excellent. They worked as a professional team knowing exactly what they were doing and impressed us with the high level of care taken with wrapping and moving our possessions.
And now the negatives... 1.The crew delivering our goods to our new home did not appear to be professional movers. 2.Only one of them spoke English. 3.They did not take care when moving items into our condo - some large, heavy items were placed against walls causing marks.4. They damaged an interior door. 5.Little care or regard was paid to boxes marked fragile. 6.They seemed to have little experience as movers and did not work as a team. Several items of crockery, glasses and a lamp were smashed; a desk was damaged; boxes had indents where they had obviously been thrown and a bike had carelessly had a wheel removed(perhaps to go in store? )It was not removed by the initial movers).
In conclusion, we feel let down by Kingsway especially after a promising start. We would not use them again.

Long Distance Move

My partner and I moved in August from Ontario to New Brunswick. The company we booked (Canadian Moving Systems) turned out to be an agent (this was not disclosed during booking) and we ended up moving with Kingsway Van Lines. Our shipment weighed in at double the correct weight (we since received a second opinion that confirms the correct weight). When I contacted Kingsway about the obvious mistake/inaccuracy of the weigh in I was blamed. The agent implied that I was not telling the truth and falsifying my shipment and cited items that would easily make up that weight... items that were not in my shipment! My total due was double my estimate. When I was made aware of the total and the weight one day before my shipment was to be delivered, I requested a re-scale, which was refused. The driver had no scale ticket to show me and told me he had no record of the weigh in. Many months later I have still not been provided a copy of the scale ticket as requested.

Several pieces of our furniture were badly damaged. Some of the damage would be impossible without excessive or unnecessary force used, and should not have been possible given that the pieces were 'securely wrapped' by the company. I bought a mattress protector from them directly for superior protection, yet somehow it was ripped through and my mattress scuffed and stained. During unloading I witnessed one mover roughly knock two boxes marked 'fragile' off the top of a tall pile (falling a good 6 ft) and leave them on the ground while the movers walked around them for several trips. When my shipment arrived the driver threatened to leave the province and withhold my goods when I was hesitant about paying the incorrect bill, to which hidden fees were added (for services clearly included upon booking).

The GM has repeatedly made fraudulent excuses and untrue statements to try and blame us instead of taking responsibility for the situation. I am extremely disappointed in both the moving service provided by Kingsway as well as the customer service, as no effort has been made to resolve my issues and instead I have been met with hostility and condescension. Please take the poor reviews very seriously and stay away from this company. I wish we had known that we would be moving with this company, as we would never have booked. If you care about your belongings, time, and your wallet please heed the warning and look elsewhere.
