Basement Renovation Second Unit

I hired Zubeyir and Mustafa to work on my legal basement and paid them upfront in a timely manner. The only material they bought was wood for framing. They stalled a project that would have taken 2 weeks to complete, nearly 2 months. He also quoted me $500 for a fire sprinkler, that I discovered cost $10. Both of them failed to show up for three inspections and refused to come and rectify the mistakes they made with the HVAC for two weeks. I was left to look for an electrical contractor myself, and wasted two weeks waiting for them to fix the HVAC, which they never did. They removed insulation from my furnace room and installed it in the washroom, leaving my furnace room bare, because they were too cheap to buy new insulation. When I confronted them about the furnace room, they said there is no need for insulation. One day, both of them came to my house, after spending more than a week on another job site to tell me they were going to buy drywall and fire rated doors. I provided them with an installment in hopes they would bring these materials, but they didn't. When I confronted them, they told me they had placed the order and it was on its way. He refused to show me an invoice or a receipt when I asked for one. Both became frustrated with the inspections from the city and repeatedly asked me to revoke my permit, which I refused to do. In the end, he left the project halfway complete, and took two installments, without buying any substantial material or completing the work. I have now wasted nearly $12,000 and have to look for a new contractor that will be willing to take on this project.

Based on my experience, both contractors do not know how to manage their time effectively and expected me to speak with inspectors. They are also not transparent about the cost of materials and when to provide installments. I would not recommend them to complete a legal basement, because they kept challenging the building inspector's comments.

See attached photos of poor workmanship.

Approximate cost of services:
