I needed the fascia and wood trim replaced on an outside porch, as it was rotten. Calwyn gave me a quote and he answered my questions as to what types of material he would use, how long the job would take, etc. I felt confident that he knew how to do the job properly. I liked that I was clear about work he would be doing I am pleased with what he did. I found him to be reliable, forthcoming and knowledgable.

Small electrical jobs- 16 Oct 2025
Normally I hire people with 50 or more ratings. But I wanted to give this contractor a chance as a local guy. Unfortunately, there were some challenges with the work. I told him up front i had a price quote for $150 from another contractor who also had a reputation on Homestars and 50 positive ratings. He said he would diagnose and troubleshoot and then tell me the price. Unfortunately, though he found the wiring problem after an hour, the gas fire place was damaged in the process. 2. I still did not hold it against him at the time and still paid him $200 and asked for a receipt and some price quotes in writing for further work . He claimed he did not have a receipt book and did not accept credit card. I was willing to give him another chance . Mistakes happen in life. But he never sent the receipt or written price quotes despite promising to send it the next day and after several more requests on my part. I found he was a bit argumentative and not always following my instructions.

Install or replace interior doors- 16 Nov 2025
I was originally happy with the service. Then I actually looked at it in the light the next day. I had two doors installed. A double door and a single door. All three doors were new and I provided pre-made door jams from Home Depot. The double doors hit each other when you close the doors at the same time. The door latches look horrible and the single door clearly had the hole for the handle cut in the wrong spot and was filled with silicone to hid this. Now I have to replace the one glass door $200, replace the double door jam $75 and have the job done over. $300 for the instal $200 to replace the door $75 to replace door jam I have now lost $575 and the headache of doing this over again.

Mabda (Ben) is a someone you should avoid at all costs. He charged me $350+HST for fixing a sink at a condo I own. I trusted the work would be done and did not follow up to confirm. Buyer beware, the sink was not fixed at all! If he challenges this review, I have receipts showing what I paid, and pictures that show it was never fixed. Stay away!! The best/funniest part is, he flooded my toilet when he was there too just my luck! Read the reviews and don't waste your time. The good ones are probably fake.

Very pleased with Ron Ritchie's work. An honest young man and respected our home as if it was his. Our ensuite bathroom needed updating after 29 years and still to be wheelchair accessible. Ron did an amazing job on our tiles in the shower!! We have a niche to hold all our shampoo's and soaps! Ron was easy to get along with, and would answer all our questions (which we had a lot). We have learned along the way! Never knew what Schluter products were before!! Our custom cabinet was created by Trillium Woodworking on German School Road. We bought our porcelain tiles at Centura on Nebo Road in Hamilton! Ron did an amazing job with the tiles!! It was a lot of work!! Mark's Plumbing help us pick out our sinks and taps! Very pleased!! Thanks Ron!! Apologies for the pics! Some won't load the proper way! But you get the idea!

Install or repair bathroom fixtures- 14 Oct 2026
If I could leave no stars I would. Paid for the job and all 3 tasks were messed up and not completed and now I have to pay someone else to fix it. Door for vanity was installed crooked and then when he came back to fix it made it worse and I had to order a new door, installed the faucets the wrong direction and did not cut down the bolts on the sides of the toilet so the caps just hang there. Also got paid for a job he didn’t do as the flooring installers were done early so they removed the toilet which was on the revised invoice. Only offered to compensate for $50.00 when it will cost more than that to get someone else to do it when he was supposed to fix his mistakes without additional charge. Lack of communication was also an issue. You would think that someone who claims to be a skilled worker would not mess so much up.

GE appliances recommended Kirk to replace the glass stovetop on our induction oven. My wife paid for the work, by VISA, ($624.56) but when we were e-mailed the receipt, it was for $489.04. When contacted he stated the extra charge of $135.52 was for labour. When he was informed that the GE receipt for $489.04 included labour and all taxes he then changed his story and stated that "they" were having billing issues and "it would be adjusted this week". As expected, we never heard from him again and he won't return calls or e-mails. Avoid Smart-Tech Appliance Service - this individual has no moral compass and does not care about ripping-off seniors.

Install or repair bathroom fixtures- 18 Oct 2025
Was given a low range quote and a high range quote for a fairly simple job. He came and we found out the job wasn't possible. That was fine. What was less fine is that he still charged the high range quote. Edit: After the original review Ali reached out and refunded $45. There was some miscommunication but overall his service was good and I would recommend him.

Repair household appliance- 8 Jul 2026
The job hasn't been completed yet. Questions about the charges, he quoted me $120 for diagnostic and if there is work to be done it would be included in the final bill. When he left he gave me a price which did not include the $120. I questioned him about it and was continuously on the phone with another person telling him what to do. Didn't speak much english. He is coming back with the part today. How should I approach this

I pre-paid $42O which was required to order the parts. The required parts were apparently available after 10 days. Then the technicians and the repair was confirmed for Monday April 8th at 2:30. They never showed up. No communication about why. This after many phone calls and texts. My recourse is unknown. They will not reply to my MANY attempts to call and connect. DO NOT hire this company. **UPDATE** Also their reply below was followed up to no avail. I called and messaged to let them know who posted the review. Nothing has happened.

What to Ask Before You Hire an Appliance Repair Specialist Near You

Before hiring an appliance repair specialist, it’s important to ask the right questions. From experience and pricing to what’s included in the service, knowing what to look for helps you make an informed decision and ensures your appliances are repaired safely and efficiently.

Here are some essential questions to ask when choosing the right appliance repair service:

What appliance repair services do you offer?

Not every appliance repair pro handles the same range of appliances. Some specialise in kitchen appliances such as ovens, dishwashers, fridges, and microwaves, while others focus on laundry machines or smaller household appliances. Services may include one-off repairs, ongoing maintenance, post-renovation checks, or installation of new appliances.

Are you licensed and insured?

It’s often beneficial to hire someone who carries liability insurance and, where required, holds trade certifications. This protects both you and the technician in case of accidental damage or injury. Ask how long they’ve been working in the trade and the types of appliances they typically repair.

Do you provide your own tools and parts?

Most appliance repair professionals bring the necessary tools and common replacement parts, but some may require you to provide specific parts or accessories. Clarify this upfront to avoid delays or additional costs.

What are your rates, and how are they structured?

Rates vary depending on appliance type, complexity of the repair, and whether it’s an emergency or routine visit. Some appliance repair specialists charge an hourly rate ($60–$120/hr), while others offer a flat fee per repair.

Be sure to ask:

Is there a minimum call-out fee?
Are travel or diagnostic charges included?
Will replacement parts cost extra? A clear discussion about pricing helps prevent unexpected expenses.

Can you provide references or reviews?

Appliance repair pros build reputations through consistent, high-quality service. Check HomeStars reviews or request references from past clients to assess professionalism and workmanship.

FAQs: Your Questions About Appliance Repairs Answered

Do appliance repair specialists handle all brands?

Most technicians specialise in common household brands, but it’s important to confirm they have experience with your specific appliance make and model.

How long will the repair take?

Repair times vary depending on the appliance and the issue. Minor repairs, such as replacing a thermostat, may take 30–60 minutes, while more complex jobs like fridge compressor replacements could take several hours.

Can I book a service for multiple appliances?

Yes, many appliance repair specialists can service several appliances in one visit, which can reduce call-out fees and downtime.

What happens if a repair is unsuccessful?

Ask about warranties on parts and labour, and what the procedure is if the initial repair does not resolve the issue.

How can I find a professional kitchen appliance repair service near me?

Use platforms like HomeStars to post your job, specify your appliance type (e.g., oven, fridge, dishwasher), and receive quotes from local appliance repair services. You’ll be able to review their profiles, read real customer feedback, and choose the right appliance repair service in your area.
