Note: Electrical work related to HVAC systems must be completed or coordinated with a HVAC technician to meet provincial and local code requirements (e.g., ESA in Ontario, Technical Safety BC, or the Alberta Safety Codes Authority).

How Much Does It Cost to Hire an Electrician?

The cost to hire an electrician typically ranges from about $65 to $130 per hour, depending on the province, the electrician’s experience, and the complexity of the work involved.

For smaller jobs, most electricians also charge a service call or minimum fee, usually between $75 and $150, which covers travel time, site setup, and an initial assessment of the issue. Prices can vary across regions: for example, rates in major cities like Vancouver or Toronto may sit at the higher end of that range, while rural or remote areas may include additional travel costs.

What Qualifications Should an Electrician Hold?

Hiring an electrician who is licensed and qualified ensures your electrical work is safe, code-compliant, and legally certified. Look for:

Provincial trade certification: Electricians must be certified through their provincial authority (e.g., Skilled Trades Ontario, Technical Safety BC, or Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training).

Red Seal Endorsement (RSE): A national standard showing the electrician is qualified to work anywhere in Canada.

Electrical contractor licence: Required for anyone operating their own business or taking on contracts directly (e.g., issued by the ESA in Ontario).

Public liability and workers’ compensation insurance: Protects homeowners and tradespeople from costs related to injury or property damage.

Specialised qualifications: For specific jobs such as EV charger installation, solar PV systems, or HVAC electrical work, electricians should hold additional manufacturer or trade-specific certifications.

What to Ask Before You Hire an Electrician Near You

Before hiring an electrician, it’s worth taking the time to ask the right questions. From qualifications and insurance to experience and pricing, knowing what to look for helps ensure your project is safe, compliant with Canadian electrical codes, and good value for money.

Here are some essential questions to ask when choosing an electrician:

Do you carry insurance and workers’ compensation coverage?

It’s vital to work with an electrician who carries public liability insurance and is registered with their provincial workers’ compensation board (like WSIB in Ontario or WorkSafeBC). This protects you from potential costs related to property damage or injury during electrical work.

What are your rates, and how do you charge?

Electricians may charge hourly or offer a fixed price for specific projects such as panel upgrades, lighting installations, or home rewiring. Be sure to ask:

  • Is there a minimum service call fee?
  • Do rates increase for emergency or after-hours work?
  • Are materials, permits, or inspection fees included in the estimate? A clear discussion up front helps avoid surprises when the bill arrives.

Do you handle permits and inspections?

Electrical work in Canada often requires permits and inspections to meet local codes. Always confirm that the electrician will handle this process on your behalf — it ensures your project meets safety standards and avoids future insurance or resale issues.

What’s your availability and estimated timeline?

Ask when they can start and how long the job will take. For large projects like rewiring or panel upgrades, discuss whether the power will need to be shut off and for how long. If it’s an urgent issue, ask if they provide same-day or emergency services.

What warranty or guarantee do you provide?

Electricians typically offer a warranty on both workmanship and parts, often lasting 1–2 years. This provides peace of mind that if an issue arises after completion, it’ll be resolved at no extra cost.

FAQs: Your Questions About Hiring an Electrician

Can I hire an electrician to only “check” my house wiring?

Yes – electricians can perform a home electrical safety inspection, even if no immediate work is planned. It’s especially smart before buying or selling a home, after a major renovation, or if your property is 40+ years old. They’ll check grounding, panel load, and potential fire hazards, then give you a written report you can keep for insurance or resale.

Why do electricians insist on using CSA-approved products?

Because Canadian law requires all electrical equipment to be CSA, UL, or ETL-certified for safety. Using uncertified parts (often from online marketplaces) can void insurance and fail inspection. Always confirm that fixtures, panels, and outlets meet Canadian certification standards.

Do electricians handle permits for solar or backup generator installs?

Yes – electricians typically coordinate with both the local utility and provincial electrical authority to obtain required permits and interconnection approvals. For solar, ask if they’re certified for PV installation and familiar with net-metering programs in your province.

Is it normal for an electrician to ask for a deposit?

Yes, for larger jobs. A 10–30% deposit is common to cover materials and permit fees. Never pay the full amount upfront. Payments should be tied to milestones or completion stages, and the contract should clearly spell this out.
