What types of services are offered by local fence contractors in Scarborough?

Fence companies in Scarborough handle a range of residential projects, from new builds to seasonal repairs. Properties across the area vary from compact lots in Cliffside to larger yards near Rouge Park, and the mix of clay soil and Toronto's freeze-thaw cycle means the right approach differs by site. Local fence and gate specialists handle everything from full installations to post-winter repairs, and some local landscaping companies take on fence work as part of larger outdoor projects.

Here are the main services available from fence contractors in Scarborough:

  • Fence installation: Full fence installation in Scarborough covers post setting, panel fitting, and finishing across materials including cedar, vinyl, aluminum, and chain link.
  • Fence repair: Common repair work includes heaved or rotted posts, loose boards, and misaligned panels. In Scarborough's clay-heavy soil, frost movement over winter is a frequent cause of damage.
  • Pool enclosure fencing: Scarborough properties with backyard pools require a permit-approved enclosure before the pool can be filled.
  • Gate installation and replacement: Many Scarborough fence contractors install and replace pedestrian and driveway gates alongside fencing work, including self-latching hardware for pool enclosures where required.

Finding a pro to help you with your fencing needs doesn’t have to be a hassle anymore. What makes hiring fence contractors in Scarborough unique?

Scarborough's mix of postwar housing, clay soil, and ravine-adjacent lots means fence installation here comes with some specific considerations. Knowing what to expect from a local fence company in Scarborough can save you time and avoid surprises on the job. Here's what sets fence contractors in Scarborough apart:

  • Older housing stock: Much of Scarborough was built in the postwar decades, so full fence replacements are common in neighbourhoods like Wexford and Agincourt, where original installations are well past their service life.
  • Clay soil and frost movement: Scarborough's clay-heavy soil shifts through freeze-thaw cycles, making proper post depth and concrete footings essential for fence installation that holds up over time.
  • Ravine-adjacent properties: Parts of Scarborough back onto ravine systems near Highland Creek and the Rouge River. Fence installation in these areas may fall under Toronto's Ravine and Natural Feature Protection By-law, adding permit requirements before work can begin.
  • Mature trees and post placement: Older Scarborough lots often have large trees close to property lines. Under Toronto's Tree Protection By-law, digging near trees with a trunk diameter of 30 cm or more requires a permit, something a local fence installer should flag before the job starts.

What are the average costs of fence contractors in Scarborough?

Fence costs in Scarborough typically run between $40 to $75 per hour for labour, though most fence installation projects are quoted per linear foot with materials and labour bundled together. Clay soil conditions and lot access can push costs higher on some properties.

Here are some typical costs for fence builders in Scarborough:

  • Fence installation: $45 to $75 per linear foot for a standard wood privacy fence, and $55 to $95 per linear foot for vinyl or aluminum.
  • Fence repair: $150 to $500, for most repairs, plus $5 to $15 per linear foot where damaged sections need to be removed first.
  • Pool enclosure fencing: $70 to $110 per linear foot for aluminum, and $140 to $220 per linear foot for frameless glass, not including permit costs.
  • Gate installation: $250 to $600 for a standard pedestrian gate, with driveway gates starting around $1,500 depending on material and hardware.

HomeStars Tip: We suggest that you clarify with your Scarborough fence company what’s included in their estimate, and that you request everything be detailed in a written quote. This supports transparency and avoids misunderstandings.

What to ask Scarborough fence contractors before hiring

Before hiring a fence company in Scarborough, here are some key questions to ask to ensure you're selecting the right professional for the job.

Are you insured, and how long have you been working as a fence installer in Scarborough?

Ask for proof of liability insurance and a current WSIB clearance certificate before work starts. Beyond coverage, local experience matters: a fence company that works regularly in Scarborough will understand the area's clay soil, typical lot configurations, and Toronto by-law requirements, all of which affect how a job gets scoped and priced.

Do you offer a warranty or guarantee on your work?

Find out what's covered and for how long. Given how freeze-thaw cycles affect post footings in Scarborough, it's worth asking specifically how the contractor handles posts that shift or heave in the seasons following installation.

When can you start the project, and what’s your estimated timeline for completion?

Get a confirmed start date and a realistic timeline before anything is signed. If your project involves digging, Ontario One Call requires utility locates at least five business days in advance. Pool enclosure projects also require a Zoning Certificate and a Pool Fence Enclosure Permit from the City of Toronto before work can begin, so build that into your schedule.

Will you handle the removal of old fences or gates?

Demolition and disposal aren't always included in a base quote, so confirm this upfront. In older Scarborough neighbourhoods like Birchcliff or Clairlea, fence posts are often set deep in compacted clay and can take considerably longer to extract than a contractor might assume if they haven't assessed the site in-person.

Is your crew familiar with working on ravine-adjacent properties in Scarborough?

Properties backing onto Highland Creek or the Rouge River corridor may fall under Toronto's Ravine and Natural Feature Protection By-law. A fence contractor who has worked on these lots before will know whether a permit is needed and how close to the ravine edge posts can be set.

Do you have experience working around mature trees on older Scarborough lots?

Many properties in established neighbourhoods like Wexford or West Hill have large trees sitting close to property lines. Digging near trees with a trunk diameter of 30 cm or more requires a permit under Toronto's Tree Protection By-law, and an experienced local fence installer will identify this before pricing the job.

How do you handle sloped lots in areas like Scarborough Bluffs?

Uneven terrain requires stepped or raked fence panels to follow the grade properly. Ask the contractor how they price for slope, since this affects both materials and labour, and whether they've completed similar installations in Scarborough's hillier pockets.

FAQ: Common questions about fence contractors in Scarborough

What materials do Scarborough fence contractors typically work with?

Material experience varies more than most people expect. A contractor who mostly installs chain link isn't necessarily the right choice for a cedar privacy fence, and the reverse is equally true. When posting on HomeStars, include the material you have in mind so you're hearing from fence installers in Scarborough who work with it regularly, and ask to see local projects when reviewing their portfolio.

Do fence contractors in Scarborough handle obtaining permits, if required?

Most standard residential fence projects in Scarborough don't require a permit. The exceptions are pool enclosures, which need both a Zoning Certificate and a Pool Fence Enclosure Permit from the City of Toronto before any digging starts, and fences on ravine-adjacent properties, which may trigger additional approvals under Toronto's Ravine and Natural Feature Protection By-law. Confirm upfront who is responsible for that paperwork.

Do fence contractors in Scarborough handle both residential and commercial projects?

The two aren't always interchangeable. A contractor comfortable with backyard privacy fencing may not be the right fit for a commercial perimeter job along Scarborough's industrial stretches near Markham Road or Ellesmere, where requirements around security fencing, gate automation, and access control tend to be more involved. If your project is on the commercial side, mention that when posting on HomeStars so you're matched with contractors who handle that kind of work.

How long does fence installation in Scarborough typically take?

Most standard backyard fence installations take one to three days for a professional crew, depending on the length and material. Projects involving post removal from old concrete footings, sloped terrain, or permit processing for pool enclosures will add time, so build some buffer into your schedule before booking.

Is it worth sharing fence costs with a neighbour in Scarborough?

If the fence sits on a shared property line, splitting the cost with your neighbour is common practice in Ontario and worth raising before you hire anyone. Getting the conversation started early avoids disputes later, particularly in denser Scarborough neighbourhoods where boundary lines between semis and detached homes can be less obvious.

What time of year is best for fence installation in Scarborough?

Late spring through early fall is the most practical window, when the ground is workable and contractors are easiest to schedule. Fall installations can be a good option if you want more flexibility on timing and pricing, as demand drops once the peak summer season ends. Winter installation is possible but generally not recommended in Scarborough given the clay soil and frost depth.
