Question 1

What materials do Vaughan fence companies typically work with?

Accepted Answer

Material experience varies more than most people expect. For example, a company that installs a lot of vinyl isn't necessarily the right fit for a cedar privacy fence, and vice versa. When posting on HomeStars, include the material you're considering so you're hearing from contractors who work with it regularly, and ask to see Vaughan projects specifically when reviewing their portfolio.

Question 2

Do fence companies in Vaughan handle obtaining permits, if required?

Accepted Answer

Most standard fence projects in Vaughan don’t require a permit. However, in the cases where they do, permit responsibility is one of the things that catches homeowners off guard. In Vaughan, pool enclosures need a Swimming Pool Enclosure Permit before a shovel goes in the ground, and fences over the standard height limits require a Height Exemption Application. If applicable for your project, ask upfront whether the contractor handles that paperwork or whether it falls to you.

Question 3

Do fence contractors in Vaughan handle both residential and commercial projects?

Accepted Answer

The two aren't always interchangeable. A company experienced in backyard privacy fences may not be the right call for a commercial perimeter job near Vaughan's Highway 400 industrial corridor, where specs around security fencing, gate automation, and access points tend to be more involved. If your project sits on the commercial side, mention that when posting your project to HomeStars.

Question 4

What fence height is allowed in Vaughan?

Accepted Answer

It depends on where the fence sits on the lot. In the front yard within 2.4 metres of the lot line, the maximum is 1.2 metres. Further back in the front yard, up to 2 metres is permitted. Rear and interior side yards allow up to 2 metres for standard residential properties, with 2.5 metres allowed where the lot abuts a multi-residential or non-residential use, a public walkway, or a rapid transit right-of-way.

Question 5

How does Vaughan's clay soil affect fence installation?

Accepted Answer

Clay soil shifts more than sandy or loam soil during freeze-thaw cycles, which puts more stress on fence posts over time. Contractors working in Vaughan typically need to set posts deeper and use proper drainage measures around footings to reduce heaving. If this isn't done correctly, posts can shift within a season or two, which leads to leaning panels and early repair costs.

Question 6

Can I fence a corner lot in Vaughan?

Accepted Answer

Yes, but sight triangle restrictions apply. Fences within the visibility triangle at street and driveway intersections must not obstruct sightlines, and in some cases the fence may need to be set back further from the street or have the section within the triangle removed or lowered. Check with the City of Vaughan before installing on a corner lot to confirm exactly where your fence can and can't go.
