What types of services are offered by local fence companies in Vaughan?

Vaughan’s neighbourhoods vary quite a bit from each other, from the older, tree-lined streets of Woodbridge to the still-growing subdivisions in Kleinburg and Vellore Village. Vaughan fence companies need to be comfortable with both aging installations that need work and brand new lots that are just being finished. Local fence and gate specialists handle both ends of that spectrum, and some local landscaping companies take on fence work as part of larger outdoor projects.

Here are some of the most common services provided by fence companies in Vaughan:

  • Fence installation: New fencing from the ground up, including post setting and panel finishing, in wood, vinyl, aluminum, and chain link.
  • Fence repair: Addressing worn or damaged sections such as rotted posts, loose boards, and panels knocked out of line by frost heave, a known issue in Vaughan's clay-heavy soils.
  • New subdivision fencing: Coordinating installations on recently built Vaughan properties where lots are still settling and neighbouring grading may not yet be finalized.
  • Estate and large lot fencing: Perimeter fencing for the larger rural and semi-rural properties found in areas like Kleinburg, where runs are longer and material volumes are significantly higher.

Finding a pro to help you with your fencing needs doesn’t have to be a hassle anymore. Use HomeStars to find fence companies in Vaughan, compare reviews from nearby homeowners, and request quotes. What makes hiring fence companies in Vaughan unique?

Vaughan sits in a part of the GTA where suburban growth and established neighbourhoods exist side by side, and that shapes what fence contractors deal with on a daily basis. From navigating the City of Vaughan's zoning and permit requirements to working on lots that range from tight townhouse properties to sprawling Kleinburg estates, local contractors understand the nuances of fence work in the city.

  • Clay soil conditions: Much of Vaughan sits on heavy clay, which shifts significantly with freeze-thaw cycles and requires deeper post setting and proper drainage consideration to keep installations stable long term.
  • Vaughan's fence permit requirements: The City of Vaughan requires permits for certain fence heights and locations, and local contractors are familiar with what triggers that process and how to stay compliant.
  • Active subdivision coordination: In newer developments across Vellore Village and Maple, contractors often need to coordinate with builders, neighbouring lot owners, and grading crews before a single post goes in.
  • Estate property experience: The larger rural and semi-rural lots around Kleinburg and Nashville Road require contractors who can manage longer perimeter runs, uneven terrain, and higher material volumes than a typical residential job.

What to ask Vaughan fence companies before hiring

Before hiring a fence company in Vaughan, here are some key questions to ask to ensure you're selecting the right professional for the job.

Are you insured, and how long have you been working as a fence installer in Vaughan?

Both questions matter before you hire anyone. Ask for proof of liability insurance and a current WSIB clearance certificate, as these protect you if something goes wrong on site. Local experience matters just as much: Vaughan's mix of established neighbourhoods like Woodbridge and still-developing areas like Kleinburg means lot conditions and installation requirements vary considerably, and a contractor who knows the city will price accordingly and flag any subdivision-specific restrictions before work begins.

Do you offer a warranty or guarantee on your work?

Confirm whether the warranty covers both labour and materials, and for how long. With Vaughan's freeze-thaw cycles affecting post footings year over year, ask directly how the company handles heaving or shifting that shows up after the job is finished.

When can you start the project, and what’s your estimated timeline for completion?

Get a confirmed start date and realistic finish window before signing anything. Budget time for utility locates through Ontario One Call, required at least five business days before any digging, and factor in permit processing if your project includes a pool enclosure or an oversized fence requiring a Height Exemption Application.

Will you handle the removal of old fences or gates?

Not every contractor includes removal and disposal in their base quote, so ask before assuming it's covered. In established Vaughan neighbourhoods like Woodbridge or Maple, older fence structures can be more embedded and take longer to pull out, which affects labour costs if it hasn't been priced in from the start.

What should I know about fencing near Vaughan's rapid transit corridors?

Properties that back onto a rapid transit right-of-way in Vaughan are permitted a higher fence height of up to 2.5 metres, compared to the standard 2 metres for rear and interior side yards. If your property is in this situation, confirm this with your contractor before finalizing material quantities and post placement, as the additional height affects both cost and structural requirements.

Have you worked on properties with significant grade changes in Vaughan?

Newer developments across Vaughan often have lots where grading is still being finalized, and older neighbourhoods can have uneven terrain that complicates post setting. Ask whether the contractor has experience with stepped or racked installation, and how they price for it, since sloped lots can add 15 to 50% to a standard installation cost.

FAQ: Common questions about fence companies in Vaughan

What materials do Vaughan fence companies typically work with?

Material experience varies more than most people expect. For example, a company that installs a lot of vinyl isn't necessarily the right fit for a cedar privacy fence, and vice versa. When posting on HomeStars, include the material you're considering so you're hearing from contractors who work with it regularly, and ask to see Vaughan projects specifically when reviewing their portfolio.

Do fence companies in Vaughan handle obtaining permits, if required?

Most standard fence projects in Vaughan don’t require a permit. However, in the cases where they do, permit responsibility is one of the things that catches homeowners off guard. In Vaughan, pool enclosures need a Swimming Pool Enclosure Permit before a shovel goes in the ground, and fences over the standard height limits require a Height Exemption Application. If applicable for your project, ask upfront whether the contractor handles that paperwork or whether it falls to you.

Do fence contractors in Vaughan handle both residential and commercial projects?

The two aren't always interchangeable. A company experienced in backyard privacy fences may not be the right call for a commercial perimeter job near Vaughan's Highway 400 industrial corridor, where specs around security fencing, gate automation, and access points tend to be more involved. If your project sits on the commercial side, mention that when posting your project to HomeStars.

What fence height is allowed in Vaughan?

It depends on where the fence sits on the lot. In the front yard within 2.4 metres of the lot line, the maximum is 1.2 metres. Further back in the front yard, up to 2 metres is permitted. Rear and interior side yards allow up to 2 metres for standard residential properties, with 2.5 metres allowed where the lot abuts a multi-residential or non-residential use, a public walkway, or a rapid transit right-of-way.

How does Vaughan's clay soil affect fence installation?

Clay soil shifts more than sandy or loam soil during freeze-thaw cycles, which puts more stress on fence posts over time. Contractors working in Vaughan typically need to set posts deeper and use proper drainage measures around footings to reduce heaving. If this isn't done correctly, posts can shift within a season or two, which leads to leaning panels and early repair costs.

Can I fence a corner lot in Vaughan?

Yes, but sight triangle restrictions apply. Fences within the visibility triangle at street and driveway intersections must not obstruct sightlines, and in some cases the fence may need to be set back further from the street or have the section within the triangle removed or lowered. Check with the City of Vaughan before installing on a corner lot to confirm exactly where your fence can and can't go.
