    I posted a relatively small job on HomeStars—about 280 square feet. The scope was straightforward: level the ground, bring in and level some crush for a hot tub base, and lay sod in front of that area. I included photos and a couple of measurements to give contractors a clear sense of the space. Out of the 10 contractors invited, only two actually came out to assess the job in person. The rest submitted quotes that were outrageous -some ranging from $5,000 to $7,000. I regularly get asked for contractor recommendations, and I’ll absolutely be sharing which companies were unreasonable and didn’t bother to show up. In the end, I went with Dirt Academy. They were professional from the start—asked to visit the site, gave a fair and reasonable quote, and booked me in right away. They showed up on the agreed-upon Monday morning and wrapped up by the afternoon, just as promised. Their communication was excellent, and they were genuinely great to work with.
