Question 1

How long do landscaping projects in Markham typically take?

Accepted Answer

Smaller jobs like garden bed installation or sod laying can often be completed within a few days, while more involved work such as interlocking stone driveways, full yard regrading, or multi-phase landscape designs can take several weeks. Soil preparation in Markham can also add time, particularly where clay-heavy ground requires amendment before sod or planting work can begin. Homeowners can use HomeStars to compare availability and find landscaping pros in Markham that fit their schedule.

Question 2

Can Markham landscaping companies handle both hardscaping and softscaping?

Accepted Answer

Many landscaping companies in Markham offer both, combining structural work like interlocking patios, walkways, and garden edging with softscape services such as lawn installation, planting design, and garden bed creation. Coordinating both through one contractor is particularly useful in Markham, where clay soils and drainage considerations need to be factored into both the structural and planting elements of a project.

Question 3

Do I need a permit to build a gate or fence in Markham?

Accepted Answer

In Markham, fence installations must comply with the City's fencing by-law, which sets out rules around height, placement, and sightline requirements depending on your lot and location within a subdivision. Homeowners in newer developments should also confirm whether their subdivision agreement includes any additional fencing conditions set out by the original developer. You can find a [fence and gate specialist near you](https://www.homestars.com/gardening-outdoors/fences-gates-specialist-pros) through HomeStars to help confirm local requirements before work begins.

Question 4

How do landscapers in Markham handle unexpected weather delays?

Accepted Answer

Spring and fall projects are most commonly affected, as heavy rain can delay excavation and grading work, while early frost limits the window for sod establishment and interlocking stone installation. Contractors typically phase or pause work around significant weather events to protect materials and ensure proper curing and settlement. Homeowners can use HomeStars to find Markham landscaping companies that are upfront about scheduling and communicate clearly when timelines shift.

Question 5

Are there landscaping restrictions for properties near Rouge National Urban Park?

Accepted Answer

Properties bordering Rouge National Urban Park or adjacent watercourses may be subject to TRCA permits and development restrictions. Work involving grading, planting near watercourses, or removal of vegetation in these areas may require review and approval before a contractor can begin. Confirming jurisdiction early in the planning process can prevent delays once a project is underway.

Question 6

Can I landscape over or around buried utilities on my Markham property?

Accepted Answer

Before any digging begins, contractors should locate buried utilities including gas lines, water mains, and electrical conduits through Ontario One Call, which provides free locates for residential properties. This is particularly relevant in Markham's newer subdivisions where utility infrastructure is more densely laid out beneath driveways, front yards, and boulevard areas. Homeowners should confirm that their contractor requests locates before breaking ground, as disturbing buried lines can result in service disruptions, safety hazards, and liability.
