Question 1

Do paving companies in Hamilton offer warranties on their work?

Accepted Answer

Warranties are common but not consistent across contractors, so get the specifics in writing before you commit. Workmanship coverage of one year is fairly standard, though some Hamilton contractors offer more. Ask whether the warranty applies to both the surface layer and the base, since some contractors only cover what's visible on top. Find out what's excluded as well, since surface cracking from ground movement or winter stress is often left out.

HomeStars reviews can give you a realistic picture of how a contractor actually follows through on warranty claims.

Question 2

How do paving companies in Hamilton handle environmental regulations?

Accepted Answer

Hamilton's industrial history means contaminated soil is a real possibility on some properties, particularly in the lower city and areas near the harbour. If excavation turns up material that looks or smells unusual, work should stop until it's assessed properly. [Ontario Regulation 406/19](https://www.ontario.ca/page/rules-soil-management-and-excess-soil-quality-standards) governs how excess soil and construction waste gets managed, and your contractor should be able to explain their process. If they haven't brought it up on a project involving excavation, it's worth asking directly.

Question 3

Do Hamilton paving companies clean up after the job?

Accepted Answer

Cleanup standards vary between contractors, so set expectations before work starts rather than after. Confirm whether old material removal, debris clearing, and tidying around the work area are included in the quoted price or billed separately. Get the agreed end condition of your property documented in writing as part of the contract.

Question 4

Does the time of year affect paving projects in Hamilton?

Accepted Answer

Hamilton's proximity to Lake Ontario means it picks up more moisture and milder temperatures than cities further inland, which can extend the usable paving season slightly compared to other cities. That said, asphalt still needs to be laid above a minimum temperature to cure properly, and contractors get busy fast once spring arrives. If you're planning a project for the warmer months, getting quotes early in the year gives you more scheduling flexibility.

Question 5

How much does it cost to repave a laneway shared with a neighbour in Hamilton?

Accepted Answer

Shared laneways are common in Hamilton's older neighbourhoods, and splitting the cost with an adjacent property owner can make the project significantly more affordable. The challenge is that both parties need to agree on timing, materials, and contractor before anything moves forward. If you're at that stage, searching Hamilton paving companies on HomeStars lets you collect quotes from multiple contractors and share the estimates with your neighbour before committing to anyone.
