Question 1

Do paving companies in Whitby offer warranties on their work?

Accepted Answer

Warranties are common but not standardized, so it's worth pinning down the details before you commit. Ask whether coverage applies to both the surface and the base, since some contractors only warranty the top layer. A year is typical for workmanship, though some will go longer. If anything goes wrong after the job, HomeStars reviews can tell you a lot about how a contractor actually handles it.

Question 2

How do paving companies in Whitby handle environmental regulations?

Accepted Answer

Provincial rules cover how contractors are expected to manage asphalt removal, equipment runoff, and dust during active work. If your project involves tearing out a significant amount of existing material, it's a fair question to ask how waste will be handled and removed from the site before the crew starts.

Question 3

Do Whitby paving companies clean up after the job?

Accepted Answer

Not every contractor treats site cleanup the same way, so get clarity on this before signing anything. Ask whether hauling away old material, clearing debris, and tidying the surrounding area is included in the price or billed as an add-on. Agree on the expected condition of your property at completion and make sure it's reflected in the quote.

Question 4

Can Durham Region's clay soil affect my paving project?

Accepted Answer

Much of Whitby sits on clay-heavy soil, which expands when wet and contracts when dry. This movement puts more stress on a driveway base than sandier soil would, and it's one of the reasons proper base depth and compaction matter more here than in some other parts of Ontario. If a contractor is quoting you a base that seems thin, it's worth asking whether they've accounted for local soil conditions.

Question 5

What happens to my driveway if a large tree is nearby?

Accepted Answer

Whitby's older neighbourhoods in particular have mature tree canopies, and root systems can work their way under a driveway over time, causing lifting and cracking. Before paving, ask your contractor to assess whether any nearby roots are close enough to cause problems. In some cases, a root barrier is worth factoring into the project, and it's a lot cheaper to address before the asphalt goes down than after.

Question 6

How do I know if a paving company in Whitby is legitimate?

Accepted Answer

Checking a contractor's HomeStars profile is a practical starting point. Verified reviews and a history of completed work in the area all give you something concrete to evaluate before you commit. Be cautious of door-to-door quotes, unusually low bids, or contractors who ask for full payment upfront, as these are common red flags in the paving industry. If you’re ready to get started, post your project on HomeStars and check the profiles of pros who reach out.
