What Are the Benefits of Hiring a Paving Contractor?

While DIY paving might seem tempting, hiring a paving contractor ensures your driveway or patio is built to last. Pavers have the right tools, equipment, and knowledge to prepare the base correctly. This is a key step that affects the durability and appearance of your paved surface.

Here are some key benefits of hiring a paving contractor:

Quality Workmanship: Professionals understand grading, drainage, and compaction — ensuring smooth, even paving that won’t crack or sink over time.

Safety and Compliance: Local contractors follow local codes and safety standards, giving you peace of mind that the job is done right.

Durability and Longevity: Proper installation and finishing techniques help your surface withstand harsh Canadian weather and heavy use.

Time and Cost Efficiency: Paving contractors can complete projects faster and avoid costly mistakes that often happen with DIY attempts.

Access to the Right Materials: Contractors source high-quality asphalt, concrete, or interlocking stone, often at better rates through trade suppliers.

Hiring Independent Pavers vs. Paving Companies

When planning a paving project, you can choose between hiring an independent paver or a larger paving company. Both have unique advantages depending on your budget, timeline, and project size.

Hiring Independent Asphalt Paving Contractors

Independent paving professionals often provide a more personal service. You’ll likely deal with the same person from start to finish making communication easier and more direct. Independent pavers can be more flexible with scheduling and may offer competitive pricing, especially for smaller driveways or patio projects. However, if your contractor becomes unavailable, you’ll need to arrange cover yourself.

What to Expect from a Paving Company

Paving companies typically have a full team and the capacity to handle larger or more complex projects, such as commercial lots or long driveways. They may also include additional services like grading, drainage correction, or sealing. The trade-off is that costs may be slightly higher to cover overhead, and you might work with different team members throughout the project.

On HomeStars, you’ll find both options, each with verified profiles and real homeowner reviews. Therefore you can compare and choose the paving professional that best fits your needs.

What to Ask Before You Hire Paving Contractors Near You

Before hiring a paving contractor, it’s worth taking the time to ask the right questions. From experience and pricing to materials and timelines, knowing what to expect helps you make an informed decision — and ensures your paving project stands the test of time.

Here are some key questions to ask when choosing the right paving contractor:

What paving services do you offer?

Not every contractor provides the same range of services. Some specialise in asphalt driveways or interlocking stone patios, while others handle commercial paving, resurfacing, or repairs. If you have specific needs — like drainage work, curbing, or gravel installation — make sure to confirm that your contractor has experience with those tasks.

Are you licensed and insured?

Always work with a paving professional who carries liability insurance and, where required, WSIB (Workplace Safety and Insurance Board) coverage. This protects you in case of accidental damage or injury during the project. Don’t hesitate to ask for proof of insurance or a business license, especially for larger jobs.

What is included in your quote?

It’s essential to understand what’s covered in the estimate. Ask whether the quote includes site preparation, grading, excavation, materials, labour, and cleanup. Some contractors also include sealing or edging in their price, while others charge extra.

Be sure to ask:

  • Do you charge per square foot or by project?
  • Are disposal fees included?
  • How long is your quote valid? Transparent pricing helps you compare quotes fairly and avoid surprise costs.

Can you show me examples of similar work or provide references?

Professional paving contractors take pride in their work and should be happy to share photos or addresses of completed projects. You can also check verified reviews from other homeowners on HomeStars to see how consistently they deliver quality results.

Do you offer a warranty?

Many reputable contractors provide a warranty on materials and workmanship — typically ranging from 1 to 5 years. Ask what’s covered (e.g., cracking, sinking, or drainage issues) and whether follow-up maintenance is included.

What’s your cleanup and maintenance policy?

Paving jobs can leave behind debris, leftover materials, or displaced soil. Clarify whether site cleanup is part of the service and if they offer optional sealing or maintenance services to protect your new surface over time.

FAQs: Your Questions About Paving Services Answered

Do paving contractors charge by the hour or by the project?

Most paving contractors charge by the project, not hourly. Pricing is typically calculated by square footage, materials, and site preparation requirements. Hourly rates may apply for small repair or maintenance work.

How long does new paving last?

A properly installed asphalt driveway can last 15–25 years, while interlocking stone or concrete paving can last 30 years or more with regular maintenance and sealing.

When is the best time of year to hire a paving contractor in Canada?

The spring to early fall months (May–October) are ideal for paving since temperatures above freezing help materials cure properly. Late-season paving is possible but depends on weather conditions.

Can paving contractors work on existing surfaces?

Yes — many contractors offer resurfacing, repair, and sealing for existing asphalt or stone. They can assess whether your current surface can be repaired or if it’s better to replace it entirely.

Do paving contractors handle permits?

Some municipalities require permits for new driveways or curb cuts. Many paving companies can guide you through the process or handle permit applications on your behalf.
