What to Ask Before You Hire a Pool Contractor Near You

Before hiring a swimming pool contractor, it’s worth asking the right questions. From design and construction to maintenance and repairs, knowing what to look for ensures your pool project runs smoothly – and that you get the most value for your investment.

Here are some essential questions to ask when choosing a pool company or contractor:

What types of pools do you build?

Not every pool contractor offers the same services. Some specialise in in-ground pools, while others focus on above-ground, fibreglass, or custom concrete builds. A good pool builder should be able to talk you through the pros, cons, and costs of each option.

Are you licensed and insured?

Requirements for swimming pool contractors can vary depending on the province and municipality. For example, some areas require specific trade licences for electrical or plumbing work during pool installation, while others focus on permits and inspections. Always confirm that your pool contractor holds the right credentials for your location.

What maintenance or aftercare services do you provide?

Beyond installation, some contractors also offer pool technician services such as water testing, chemical balancing, filter cleaning, and seasonal maintenance. If not, ask if they can recommend a local technician.

What are your rates, and how are they structured?

Costs can vary depending on pool size, materials, and any extras like decking, heating, or lighting. Some pool builders provide fixed-price contracts, while others charge separately for each stage of the build.

Be sure to ask:

  • Are permits, excavation, and landscaping extra?

  • Do they require a deposit or staged payments?

  • Are warranties included for materials and workmanship?

Can you provide references or past projects?

A reputable pool company will have a portfolio of completed pools and customer reviews you can check. Ask to see similar projects to yours – whether that’s a small backyard pool, a lap pool, or a large luxury installation.

FAQs: Your Questions About Pool Contractors Answered

How long does it take to build a swimming pool?

Timelines depend on the type of pool. An above-ground pool may be installed in a few days, while in-ground pools often take several weeks to months due to excavation, plumbing, and finishing work. Your pool builder should provide a realistic schedule before starting.

What kind of warranty should I expect?

Most pool companies provide warranties on both workmanship and materials. These may cover things like leaks, structural cracks, or faulty equipment. Always ask what’s included and get the warranty terms in writing.

Can a pool contractor help with permits and regulations?

Yes. A professional swimming pool contractor should be familiar with local building codes and safety requirements, such as fencing, covers, and alarms. They can usually manage the permit process for you.

Do I need ongoing servicing after my pool is built?

Yes. Even with modern filtration and automation systems, pools require regular upkeep. Hiring a pool technician for weekly or monthly servicing helps keep the water safe and the system running efficiently.

What should I look for in a pool company?

Check reviews, ask for references, and view completed projects. A professional pool contractor should be transparent about costs, timelines, and what’s included in the contract. Look for experience with the type of pool you want built.
