What Services Are Available for Tree Removal?

There are a variety of tree removal services beyond simply removing the tree that can improve lawn health or safety, or that can properly prepare a green space for new uses. Many tree removal pros offer several kinds of lawn care services, so make sure to ask what they can do for your yard.

Here are a few of the most common tree removal services in your area:

  • Full tree removal: Cutting down and clearing an entire tree, including hauling away debris
  • Tree stump removal and grinding: Removing or grinding down stumps left behind after a tree is cut
  • Tree trimming and pruning: Removing branches to manage size, shape, or safety
  • Lot clearing: Removing multiple trees and brush to clear land for construction or landscaping

No matter your tree removal needs, HomeStars can help you find the right match. If you’re ready to get started, post your project to start connecting with available pros.

How Much Do Tree Removal Services Cost?

Tree removal costs are typically based on the size, location, and condition of the tree, as well as the complexity of the job. Most charge a flat rate per tree, though some price by the hour for smaller jobs or lot clearing work, with hourly rates generally ranging from $150 to $250+ per hour depending on crew size and equipment.

Here are some typical costs for tree removal services:

  • Full tree removal: $200 to $2,000+ per tree, depending on height and accessibility
  • Tree stump removal and grinding: $100 to $400 per stump, with some pros charging by stump diameter
  • Tree trimming and pruning: $150 to $1,000 per tree, based on size and the amount of work needed
  • Lot clearing: $500 to $5,000+, depending on the size of the lot and the number of trees being removed

HomeStars tip: Make sure to get everything written down in an itemized quote. This avoids misunderstandings and supports transparency and clear communication for both you and the contractor.

Why Should You Hire a Pro for Tree Removal Services or Do it Yourself?

Tree removal is one of the more hazardous home projects a homeowner can take on. Falling trees and branches are unpredictable, and without the right equipment and know-how, the risks to yourself, your property, and your neighbours are significant.

While light pruning of smaller branches is something many homeowners can manage on their own, there are several reasons that most tree work is best left to the pros:

  • Safety: Felling a tree requires controlling its fall path, and a miscalculation can bring it down on a home, fence, or power line.
  • Equipment: Pros arrive with chainsaws, chippers, rigging gear, and bucket trucks. Renting all of this for a one-time job rarely makes financial sense.
  • Liability: If a DIY removal damages a neighbour's property or injures someone, you are likely on the hook. Pros carry insurance that protects you if something goes wrong.
  • Permits: Many municipalities require a permit before a tree can be removed. Pros know local requirements and can make sure work stays compliant.

Hiring a professional to help you with your tree removal needs is the best course of action for several reasons. Post your project on HomeStars now to get started and match with available, willing pros!

What to Ask Tree Removal Pros Near You Before Hiring

When hiring for local tree removal services, asking the right questions can help you make an informed decision before choosing who you work with.

Here are a few questions to ask before committing:

Do you carry liability insurance and workers’ compensation coverage?

This protects you if something goes wrong during the job or a worker is injured on your property. Don’t hesitate to ask for proof.

Do I need a permit, and will you handle obtaining it?

Some tree removal projects require permits before work can begin. Confirm upfront who handles the application and whether the cost is included in the quote.

Do you have experience with tree removals like mine?

Different tree types require different equipment and approaches for removal, so it’s important to know if they have the know-how and tools to work on yours specifically.

Additionally, trees near structures, power lines, or in tight spaces require a different approach than a straightforward open-yard removal. It's worth asking for examples of work done on similar projects.

What preparation should be done before work begins?

Asking how you can prepare your property for work as well as what precautions they take for your lawn, garden, fencing, and nearby structures supports both efficiency and safety.

What does cleanup include?

Some pros haul everything away while others leave wood and debris behind, and whether it’s an included service or a separate charge varies from one contractor to the next. Get this confirmed in writing before work begins, as hauling fees can add to your final bill.

FAQ: Your Questions About Tree Removal Services Answered

How long does tree removal near me generally take?

Most standard tree removals can be completed in a few hours, though larger or more complex jobs may take a full day or more. Factors like tree size, location, and how much debris needs to be cleared all affect the timeline.

What time of year is best to remove a tree?

Late winter and early spring are generally the best times to remove a tree, as the ground is firm, leaves are off, and pros tend to have more availability. That said, tree removal can be done year-round. If you want to get ahead of the busy season, HomeStars can help you find and book a local pro before the spring rush hits.

Can I keep the wood after my tree is removed?

In most cases, yes. Let your contractor know ahead of time if you want to keep the logs for firewood or the chips for mulch, as many pros will otherwise haul everything away as part of cleanup. Some may even offer a small discount if they don't have to remove the material themselves.

Will tree removal affect my other trees or garden?

A reputable contractor will take precautions to minimise impact on surrounding plants and lawn, but some disturbance is normal, particularly from heavy equipment. It's worth walking the property with your contractor beforehand to flag anything you want them to work around.

Do I need to be home when the work is done?

Not necessarily. Tree removal generally doesn't require access to the interior of your home, so many homeowners arrange to have the work done while they're away. That said, it's a good idea to be reachable by phone in case your contractor has questions or runs into something unexpected.

Do I need to remove the stump after a tree is removed?

Tree stump removal is usually a separate service and isn't always included in the base quote, so it's worth confirming upfront. Left in place, stumps can become a tripping hazard, attract pests, and take up usable space in your yard. If you're ready to deal with yours, you can find a local tree stump removal pro on HomeStars and get the job done right.

Do tree removal pros need any credentials to perform work?

In Canada, the most widely recognized credential is the ISA Certified Arborist designation, issued by the International Society of Arboriculture. While certification isn't legally required in most provinces, hiring an ISA-certified arborist means your pro has met a standardized level of knowledge in tree care, safety, and best practices.
