How Much Does Furnace Installation and Replacement Near Me Cost?

Most furnace work is quoted as a flat-rate project rather than hourly. For repairs and service calls, expect an hourly rate of $75–$150, or $140–$210 for emergency/after-hours work, plus a minimum call-out fee of $100–$200.

Here are some typical costs for common furnace services:

  • Furnace installation costs: $3,000–$9,500+, including the unit and labour; higher end for first-time installs, high-efficiency models, or complex setups
  • Furnace replacement costs: $4,000–$6,750 on average, including removal of the old unit
  • Furnace repair services: $80–$2,400+ depending on the part and complexity
  • Furnace maintenance costs: $70–$250 for a one-time tune-up; $150–$500/year for an ongoing plan

HomeStars tip: Make sure to get everything written down in an itemized quote. This avoids misunderstandings and supports transparency and clear communication for both you and the contractor.

Why You Must Hire a Pro for Furnace Installation?

Since they run on gas, furnace installation and replacement have legal requirements and involve safety risks. For several reasons, including safety and compliance, furnace work should only be handled by a certified professional.

  • Safety and gas lines: Furnace installation involves gas connections and venting, where mistakes can lead to serious accidents.

  • Permits and code compliance: Most municipalities require a permit and inspection for furnace work; pros know local building codes and can pull permits on your behalf.

  • Warranty protection: Many furnace manufacturers void the warranty if the unit isn't installed by a licensed HVAC technician.

  • Rebates: Government and utility rebates often require professional installation documentation to qualify.

Hiring a pro to help you with your furnace project protects you from risk and supports compliance, all while saving you time and avoiding stress. Post your project on HomeStars now to find the help you need.

What to Ask Before You Hire a Furnace Installation Pro Near You

When choosing a local furnace installation pro, asking the right questions can help you make an informed decision before hiring.

Here are five questions worth asking any furnace pro before you commit:

Do you carry liability insurance and workers’ compensation coverage?

This protects you if something goes wrong during the job or a worker is injured on your property. Don’t hesitate to ask for proof.

Will you handle permits?

Furnace work generally requires a permit since it involves gas lines. Some contractors include this as part of the job, while others don't.

Confirm upfront who handles permits and, if the contractor handles it, whether it’s included in the quote or a separate charge.

Can you recommend a model?

A good furnace installation pro can match a unit to your home's size, existing infrastructure, and budget, rather than simply selling you whatever they have in stock.

How should I prepare before you arrive?

Ask what's expected of you ahead of time, whether that's clearing the work area, securing pets, or shutting off utilities.

Do you offer a written warranty, and what does it cover?

Make sure you understand the difference between the manufacturer's equipment warranty and the contractor's labour warranty, and how long each one lasts.

FAQs:Questions on Furnace Installation and Replacement Answered

How do I find a professional who can do furnace installation near me?

Start by reading verified reviews from homeowners in your area. HomeStars makes it easy to compare furnace installers near you, see their past work, and read ratings from real customers.

How does a furnace compare to other heating systems?

Furnaces are a popular choice for their ability to quickly provide consistent warmth, their high degree of compatibility with central air conditioning systems, and their cost-efficiency. Other systems, such as boilers or heat pumps, have a higher upfront cost, are generally more energy-efficient and provide more evenly distributed warmth.

What's the difference between a single-stage, two-stage, and variable-speed furnace?

Single-stage furnaces run at full blast or not at all, while two-stage models can operate at a lower setting for milder days, improving efficiency and comfort. Variable-speed furnaces offer the most precise control, adjusting output continuously to maintain a consistent temperature. They cost more upfront but tend to deliver lower energy bills and quieter operation over time.

How long does a furnace installation take?

Most furnace installations take four to eight hours, though more complex jobs involving ductwork modifications or first-time installs can take longer. Your contractor should give you a realistic timeframe when they provide the quote.

How do I know when to repair vs. replace my furnace?

A common rule of thumb is that if the repair cost exceeds 50% of what a new unit would cost, replacement is usually the better investment. Age is also a factor; most furnaces have a lifespan of 15 to 20 years, so an older unit with recurring issues is often worth replacing rather than patching.

How often should a furnace be serviced?

Most manufacturers and HVAC professionals recommend an annual tune-up, ideally in the fall before the heating season begins. Regular maintenance helps catch small issues before they become costly repairs and keeps the unit running efficiently throughout the winter. HomeStars can help you find furnace pros who can perform regular maintenance on your unit.
