The experience we had was absolutely terrible! We DO NOT recommend this company. We've spent over $50,000 and still have an incomplete kitchen. We told Dan at Caledon Renovations, from the very beginning, that we needed the renovation completed as quickly as possible to sell and relocate for work. Dan told us that he could complete the work in 4 weeks. On June 3rd, 2024, demolition began on our whole main floor. Once demolition was complete, no one showed up for 2 weeks. We were constantly told there were issues sourcing product, finally, when he showed up with the floor tile, it was not what we had picked but decided to continue anyway to speed up the renovation. It is now August 7th and it still not done. There were several quality issues that were addressed several times and Dan offered to come back to fix these issues for a 3rd time - we declined. The final straw was when we had a subcontractor show up at our house demanding money or he would place a lean on our house. After speaking to this gentleman, we found out that Dan had not paid him and said it was because we owed money - we were paid up to date. When we told Dan we do not want to work with him because of the trouble he has caused, he offered a refund of $1200 for upper kitchen cabinet doors. Even though we were not satisfied with the refund amount, we agreed. We told him to pick up his sign from our home and give us the refund. That was 6 days ago and we've heard nothing from him. We now have to hire another contractor to finish the renovation which is going to cost us more money and time.

My service call was to replace an electric hot water tank and repair a shower leak and look the hot water slow supply from a couple of taps. He ended up changing out 2 bathroom taps and stoppers and also fixed a toilet leak on top of the original requests. - Neil did a great job going over everything with me and the tenant. He wore his mask and was COVID respectful. He was very kind and patient and thorough with the requested original service call and the additional items that ended up also being added. Had this company quote a couple of years ago on installing an air conditioner unit and HVAC and water heater in a different home - the owner was also thorough and gave us a good price - we ended up using a different company that had a product that worked better for us at the time but Good Guys made such a good impression on me during that call two years ago, that I called them for this job and got continued great service. Thank you Neil and Good Guys Team!

What Services Do Water Heater Installation Pros Near You Offer?

Often handled by HVAC contractors or plumbers, professionals who handle water heater installations also offer other heating and plumbing services.

Here are some of the most common ones:

Water heater installation or replacement: Installing or swapping out old or failing units for new ones, including tank, tankless, or heat pump models.
Water heater repair: Diagnosing and fixing issues like pilot light failures, faulty thermostats, sediment buildup, or leaking tanks.
Plumbing repairs and maintenance: Many workers also handle general plumbing tasks like fixing leaks, replacing pipes, or servicing shutoff valves connected to the water heating system.
Boiler repair and installation: Boiler systems share similar hydronic and gas/electric connections, making this a natural overlap for many workers in this space.

No matter your heating needs, HomeStars can help. Post your project now and see how easy it is to find the right pro for you!

How Much Does Water Heater Installation Near Me Cost?

Depending on the complexity of the project, water heater service charges can vary. Workers typically charge by the job, though some may charge hourly rates of $75–$150/hr for smaller repairs or diagnostics.

Here are some typical costs for common services provided by water heater pros in your area:

Water heater installation costs and repair: $150–$600
Water heater replacement costs: $800–$2,500, depending on unit type (tank vs. tankless) and complexity of the install
Plumbing costs repairs and maintenance: $100–$400
Boiler installation and repair: $3,000–$8,000, with installation on the higher end and repairs varying widely based on the issue

HomeStars tip: Make sure to get everything written down in an itemized quote. This avoids misunderstandings and supports transparency and clear communication for both you and the contractor.

Why Should You Hire a Water Heater Installation Pro vs. DIY?

Water heater work involves gas lines, electrical connections, and pressurized plumbing, making it one of the riskier home projects to tackle on your own. Here's why most homeowners leave it to a pro:

Safety: Improper gas or electrical connections can lead to leaks, fires, or carbon monoxide risks.
Code compliance: Water heater installations must meet local building codes, and permits are often required. A pro will know what's needed in your area.
Warranty protection: Many manufacturers void warranties if the unit isn't installed by a licensed professional.
Long-term savings: A properly installed unit runs more efficiently and is less likely to fail early, saving you money down the road.

Hiring a pro to help you with your water heater installation is the best course of action to ensure safety and compliance, all while supporting cost-efficiency. Post your project on HomeStars now to find the help you need.

What to Ask Before You Hire a Water Heater Installation Pro Near You

When choosing a water heater installation specialist near you, asking the right questions can help you make an informed decision before hiring.

Here are a few questions you can ask before committing:

Do you carry liability insurance and workers’ compensation coverage?

This protects you if something goes wrong during the job or a worker is injured on your property. Don’t hesitate to ask for proof.

Will you handle permits?

Water heater installations often require a permit, especially when gas lines or electrical work are involved. Confirm upfront who handles it and whether it's included in the quote or a separate charge.

Can you recommend a unit?

A good water heater installation pro can match a water heater to your home's size, existing infrastructure, and budget, rather than simply selling you whatever they have in stock.

Do you offer a written warranty, and what does it cover?

Make sure you understand the difference between the manufacturer's equipment warranty and the contractor's labour warranty, and how long each one lasts.

How long will the job take?

A straightforward replacement might take a few hours, but more complex installs involving new gas lines or electrical upgrades can take longer. Knowing this upfront helps you plan your day.

What will happen to my old unit?

If your project involves replacement of an old unit, not all contractors include disposal in their quote. Confirm whether removal and haul-away of your old water heater is part of the job or an added cost.

FAQ: Your Questions About Water Heater Installation Answered

How do I find a professional who performs water heater installation near me?

HomeStars makes it easy to browse local water heater pros, read reviews from homeowners in your area, and request quotes. Search by postal code to find someone near you and compare ratings before you hire.

How do I know if my water heater needs to be repaired or replaced?

If your unit is under 10 years old and the issue is minor, a repair is usually the more cost-effective route. However, if it's aging, frequently breaking down, or no longer heating efficiently, replacement is likely the better long-term investment.

Can I install a tankless water heater if I currently have a tank unit?

Switching from a tank to a tankless system is possible, but it often requires upgrades to your gas line, electrical panel, or venting, depending on the model. It's worth getting a pro to assess your home before committing to the switch.

What should I do if my water heater is leaking?

Shut off the water supply to the unit and, if it's gas-powered, turn off the gas as well. Contact a professional as soon as possible. You can use HomeStars to find a local water heater pro who can assess the situation quickly. We suggest finding a specialist in advance to keep on-hand for emergencies.

How long does a water heater typically last?

Tank water heaters generally last 8–12 years, while tankless models can last 20 years or more with proper maintenance. Keeping up with annual flushing and inspections can help extend the life of your unit regardless of type.
