Question 1

What types of renovations are typically allowed in a Old Toronto condo unit?

Accepted Answer

In Old Toronto, most cosmetic updates such as painting, flooring, and fixture replacements are generally permitted without board approval, though policies vary by building.

Structural changes, plumbing relocations, and anything affecting shared systems or common elements will almost always require formal approval and may have restrictions or additional conditions attached.

Question 2

How long does a condo renovation usually take in Old Toronto?

Accepted Answer

Timelines vary widely depending on the scope of the project and also depend on where specifically your condo is in Old Toronto. A bathroom refresh typically takes one to two weeks, while a full kitchen or multi-room remodel runs four to eight weeks or more.

Building access logistics, elevator booking requirements, and permit processing can all add time to a condo renovation compared to a similar project in a house.

Question 3

Do I need approval from my condo board before starting a renovation in Old Toronto?

Accepted Answer

In most cases, yes. Most condo corporations in Old Toronto require owners to submit a renovation request and receive written approval before any work begins. Your board may also require proof of contractor insurance, a deposit against potential damage to common areas, and a review of your renovation plans.

You can find condo renovation contractors on HomeStars who are familiar with this process and can help you prepare the documentation your board requires.

Question 4

What permits are required for a condo kitchen or bathroom renovation in Old Toronto?

Accepted Answer

Permits are typically required for any work involving plumbing, electrical, or structural changes, such as moving a sink, adding a circuit, or removing a wall. Your contractor should be familiar with Old Toronto’s building codes and can help you determine which permits apply to your project.

Skipping permits can result in fines or complications when you go to sell your unit.

Question 5

Are there noise or work hour restrictions in Old Toronto that I need to follow during a condo renovation?

Accepted Answer

Most condo buildings have bylaws that restrict construction noise to specific hours, commonly weekdays between 8am and 5pm, with no work permitted on weekends or holidays. Always check your building's rules before scheduling work, as violations can result in fines or work stoppages.

Question 6

How do I find a contractor who has experience working in condo buildings in Old Toronto?

Accepted Answer

Condo renovations come with unique challenges like building access rules, noise restrictions, and strata approvals, so it helps to work with a contractor who is familiar with that environment.
