Repair or maintain fence- 8 Aug 2026
Run away from this contractor. I hired him to do a simple fence repair. He agreed to do it a week later. On the scheduled Saturday he didn't show. I call and he told me he had to help a stranded friend. He said he would show up at the beginning of the week. No show or contact Monday or Tuesday, i called and left a message on Wednesday morning then texted him mid day. Wednesday night he texted that he was sick. No contact Thursday, i texted twice on Friday, no response. I would at least expect some kind of communication to let me know if he is canceling or not rather than leaving me hanging. I would not recommend this contractor.

Roof Sealant- 11 Jun 2026
It did not proceed. The job was a simple recalling of some skylights. I explained the roof was metal and 45 degree slope. You accepted and set a date for the work to be done for $85/hr. I later explained a 20 foot ladder was adequate to access the roof as it had been so accessed by a professional outfit before. Your man arrived with a fold up ladder he said was inadequate. I doubt he intended to do the job. He said he needed another person to do the job and I agreed. I was then informed that an unspecified number of roof anchors costing $295 each were required. I was then informed that a mechanical lift would also be required. My roof has been easily accessed and worked on before without a lift or roof anchors…but the men were experienced professionals. I could not recommend your firm for metal roof work as a result of this experience. Ryan was however a very nice person.

In May 2019, I hired Shubrook Constructions to do landscaping. The company installed a water feature with bubbling rock as part of the landscaping. In July 2020, the pump that was under warranty stopped working. I informed the owner about the pump malfunction on July 6, 2020, and requested that he replace the pump or provide me with the warranty papers. On July 10, 2019, I wrote directly to the pump manufacturer in the UK and copied the owner. The manufacturer asked for the pump purchase information to carry out the proper paperwork to affect a warranty return. The company representative from the Sales and Customer Service noted: "I am unable to replace a pump under warranty without proof of purchase." On August 3, 2019, I followed up with Shubrook Constructions. While the company provides a one-year warranty for their work, the pump was still under warranty. I told the owner that if he could not replace the pump, please provide me with the required papers to get the pump directly from the manufacturer. I received the owner's response that the pump is getting delivered. It should be here within a few weeks. On September I2, 2020, I received another email from the owner about another delivery date. After repeated attempts and follow-ups with the business, the company installed the pump that did not display the bubbling feature I paid the money for. I told the owner I was very dissatisfied. The owner assured me that he would install the same/similar pump. Due to COVID-19, I was very patient with the company. After repeated attempts and emails, on June 15, 2021, the owner indicated that he would install the pump by the end of that week. However, he did not come to install the pump nor inform me that he would not be installing it. On June 21, 2021, I contacted Better Business Bureau (BBB) to resolve the issue. That same day I received a text from Shubrook Construction owner "Got the pump. Will be stopping by tomorrow to install." I informed BBB of the text and that I would withdraw the complaint if he installed the pump. However, the owner did not install the pump. On July 20, 2021, I received a response from BBB: "Your BBB has made several attempts to contact the business regarding the above referenced complaint. We regret to inform you that we have not received a response from the company." I contacted the Canadian Home Builders' Association. They informed me that as "Shubrook Constructions is not a member of the Canadian Home Builders' Association," they could not assist me. After talking with the College of Trades, I contacted Consumer Protection, Ontario. They reviewed my file and assigned a consumer officer from the Consumer Services Operations Division in December 2021. The officer offered a mediation. On December 17, 2021, I received the following response from the consumer officer, and they referred me to legal services: "The ministry may mediate a complaint if the parties agree to mediation. The business named in your complaint does not agree to mediation. Your complaint suggests that there may be evidence of a contravention of consumer law." In summary, Shubrook Constructions: 1) did not replace the pump with the quality that would provide the same bubbling rock feature even though the owner informed me that he has the pump and will install it; 2) did not return the hose that the owner took that I paid for. When I questioned why the owner took the hose with the old pump, I understood that he would replace the entire unit; nor 3) provide me with the warranty papers and the receipt for the pump that the manufacturer required. Fortunately for me, when I contacted the pump manufacturer and explained the situation, the sales and customer service wrote: "Ideally, we would like the pump purchase information so that we can carry out the right paperwork to effect a warranty return for you, but if that is not forthcoming, as a customer of ours with a warranty failure, we will put this right for you." And he sent the pump, free of charge. The company was terrific. However, the pump did not come with the hose. I have learned a lot through this experience. I should have insisted on the warranty papers rather than taking the owner's word for it. Further, I should have contacted BBB to check if the company is BBB accredited. Shubrook Constructions was not BBB accredited - if the business is not an Accredited BBB Business, they are not required to respond to complaints. Also, in the future, I will contact the City of London for any construction work or updates to my home. The city can help consumers understand construction codes (e.g., window well installation). In some cases, an inspector can also do an inspection. Through the College of Trades, one can check what any business is licensed for and isn't. One can contact the Canadian Home Builders' Association for home building information. I have written to local and provincial officials to strengthen construction and landscaping laws. Fortunately for me, the manufacturer demonstrated very high-quality customer service. They replaced the pump without papers and helped me understand what I needed to install it as I no longer had the hose from the old pump.

Repair door- 31 Oct 2026
DO NOT HIRE THIS GUY! He does shoddy carpentry work. When asked a few clarifications and questions regarding the flaws in his work and to fix them to an acceptable standard, he became very aggressive, talked disrespectfully and intruded in private space and tried to intimidate by shouting on my face just a few inches away. He was so threatening that I told him that he should leave my home immediately otherwise I'll call the police. The moment I said that, he ran out and shouted that he will return with his lawyer. Absolutely unprofessional and uncivilized character. All I wanted him to do is rectify and fine tune the rattling & squeaking of the doors as well as fix all the flaws to an acceptable standard. I have attached photos and have 3 videos showing the rattling, squeaking doors as they open & close. I am unable to load the videos here but they are available to view upon request and are uploaded in the messages section of this app.

General contractor service- 1 Jul 2026
Ali at Fixo never plans ahead or takes responsibility. He promised a tiled shower and base that'd avoid mold, as another contractor offered. After demolition, he said his tiled floor was no guarantee against mold. I felt stuck, and was forced to accept an acrylic base he assured me would be waterproof, but failed to properly waterproof underneath. He was also messy, disorganized, and pushed time limits set by my condo. He rushed to install a shower door from Amazon I asked he check, as it had been repackaged. After installation, he explained the glass risked hitting the towel rail and left a solution to me. I pointed out warping of the frame he said he'd fix, then didn't. After I paid, I found a scratch on the glass door and torn liner. He accused me of sending a fake picture, was abusive, and made up excuses to not exchange the door. Now water's leaking outside the shower onto the floor as silicone peels off. I want a REFUND! Find my detail review in attached images.

Install or replace curtain rails- 26 Apr 2025
We hired Right Home Decor to install our curtains. It has now been a month, and the job is still not completed. On the first day, I paid him in full, even though the work was not finished. He agreed to return another day to complete it. When he came back on the second day, we realized that one of the materials was not compatible. We agreed that once I got the correct material, he would come and complete the installation when he was available. I later got the right material and reached out to him. He agreed to come the following week. On the agreed day, I waited for him, but he never showed up. He also didn’t reach out to inform me; I was the one who had to follow up. He then told me he was out of town — this was after I had been waiting for him. He promised to come the next day or, at the latest, the following week. However, the week passed without any communication from him. Again, I had to follow up, and he said he would come in two or three days. My Master room window is just bare

General contractor service- 24 Jan 2026
Hired to change out a shower valve and fixtures that were bypassing between the tub spout and shower head. The newly installed Moen valve is still bypassing - so the initial problem wasn't fixed. Instructed him to reuse the old tub spout though as the hole around the tiles was quite large and the new shower fixture would cover it - he installed the new one and poorly siliconed around the hole with a very large gap. Requested he took photos of the process so i had documentation for future reference - not completed. He installed the new shower handle but didn't tighten the screw so the shower handle was very floppy and I had to tighten it. He must have leaned on and pulled the anchors out of the wall the hand towel rack - didn't say anything and placed it back - fell out when it got used. He left a mess in the utility room. Cost $525 and he is unwilling to give me any money back. In summary, I'm no further ahead, stuff got damaged, and now I have to call someone else.

Install or replace wooden floor or parquet- 11 Nov 2025
At first seemed professional. they helped move some additional garbage furniture out and helped move the flooring that was delivered outside the building in. We compensated them fairly for this ($100 cash). During the job they consistently left the door open after being asked politely to keep it closed when not using balcony. Ended up with hoards of flies we had to kill. Additionally found one guy sitting on our couch in his work clothes after one working day. They did a decent job in the main areas but corner work and edges were done very poorly to which we brought it up and they said they see no issue or tried to bend it like its supposed to look like that… it wasnt. We are two young adult females and definitely felt our naivety was taken advantage of. They also broke a transition strip and asked us to pay for a new one for them to replace then failed to show up for the appointment to repair them without notice. Hopefully they learn from this experience but I hope no one else suffers

How Much Does It Cost to Hire a Renovation Company?

Home renovation companies typically charge between $50 and $150 per hour. For larger renovations, many contractors price based on a percentage of the total project budget.

Here are some typical costs for common home renovation services near you:

Kitchen renovation costs: $20,000 to $50,000+ depending on factors like size, cabinetry, and appliances.
Bathroom remodel costs: from $10,000 to $30,000, which can vary with size and the number of new fixtures installed.
Basement renovation costs: from $30,000 to $70,000 with higher prices including framing, insulation, drywall, flooring, and finishing work.
Home additions: can range from $25,000 for a basic addition to $200,000+ for a full second-storey addition.
Interior renovations: can range widely with minor updates costing a few thousand dollars, while full-scale interior overhauls can run $50,000+

HomeStars tip: Make sure to get everything written down in an itemized quote. This avoids misunderstandings and supports transparency and clear communication for both you and the contractor.

Why Should You Hire a Home Renovation Company vs. Doing it DIY?

Home renovation projects can be complex, time-consuming, and costly if things go wrong. For anything beyond minor cosmetic updates, hiring a professional is usually the more effective and less stressful path.

Here are a few reasons hiring a home renovation company is best:

Time savings: Home renovation companies have the crews, tools, and supplier relationships to complete work far faster than a typical DIY approach.
Code compliance: Work involving electrical, plumbing, or structural changes must meet local building codes.
Professional results: Mistakes in renovation work are expensive to fix, so it’s best to work with home renovation contractors to get it right the first time.
Project management: On larger jobs, contractors coordinate timelines, deliveries, and subtrades so you don't have to.

For any renovation that goes beyond a quick cosmetic fix, working with a home renovation company near you is worth the investment. Post your project on HomeStars to connect with pros ready to take it on.

What to Ask a Home Renovation Company Before Hiring

When choosing a home renovation company near you, asking a few questions about their skills, experience, and credentials can help you make an informed decision before hiring.

Do you carry liability insurance and workers’ compensation coverage?

This protects you if something goes wrong on the job, whether that's accidental damage to your home or an injury on-site. Ask for proof before work begins.

Are you familiar with local building codes and permit requirements?

Renovation work involving structural, plumbing, or electrical changes often requires permits. Confirm your contractor knows what's required in your municipality and will handle the paperwork.

What does your quote include, and how do you handle unexpected costs?

It's common to uncover hidden issues once work is underway. Understanding how they handle scope changes and additional costs upfront avoids difficult conversations later.

Can I see examples of similar projects you've completed?

Ask for photos of past work or check their HomeStars profile to see reviews and project photos from other homeowners in your area.

Who will be on-site managing the work day-to-day?

On larger projects, contractors often bring in subtrades. Knowing who is responsible for day-to-day oversight helps set clear expectations from the start.

Do you offer a warranty or guarantee on your work?

A good contractor should stand behind their work. Ask whether they offer a warranty on labour and for how long. It's also worth clarifying what the process looks like if an issue comes up after the job is complete.

FAQs: Your Questions About Home Renovation Services Answered

How long does a home renovation take?

Timelines vary depending on the scope of work. A bathroom renovation might take one to two weeks, while a full kitchen or basement project can run four to eight weeks or more. Larger additions or whole-home renovations can take several months. Your preferred contractor should provide a project timeline before work begins.

Do I need a permit for my renovation?

It depends on the type of work you plan to do for your renovation project. Cosmetic updates like painting or flooring typically don't require a permit, but structural changes, additions, and work involving electrical or plumbing usually do. Check with your home renovation pro how they handle obtaining permits for work that requires it.

Should I get multiple quotes before hiring a home renovation company?

Yes. Getting two to three quotes gives you a clearer picture of fair pricing and helps you compare what's included in each scope of work, which is easy to do on HomeStars. We recommend caution with quotes that are significantly lower than others, as this can indicate corners being cut.

How much should I budget for unexpected costs during my home renovation?

Most renovation professionals recommend setting aside 10–20% of your total budget as a contingency. Older homes in particular are more likely to have hidden issues, such as outdated wiring, water damage, or structural problems, that only become visible once work is underway. A HomeStars home renovation pro can make suggestions on how to budget appropriately.

How do I know if a home renovation contractor is a good fit for my project?

Check that they carry liability insurance and workers' compensation coverage, and ask for references or examples of past work. Reviewing their HomeStars profile is a good way to see verified reviews from other homeowners and get a sense of a renovation company’s track record.
