What to Ask Before You Hire a Stairmaker

Before hiring a stairmaker, it’s important to ask the right questions. From experience and pricing to materials and installation methods, knowing what to look for helps you make an informed decision—and ensures you get the most value from your staircase project.

Here are some essential questions to ask when choosing the right stair contractor:

What types of staircases do you build or renovate?

Not all stair makers work on the same kinds of projects. Some specialize in residential stairs, while others focus on commercial or office spaces. Within those categories, services may include new builds, renovations, custom designs, or even niche solutions like spiral staircases, floating stairs, or loft ladders.

Are you insured?

It’s essential to hire a stair maker who carries public liability insurance. This protects both you and the contractor in case of accidental damage or injury during the project. Additionally, confirm that they adhere to local building codes and safety standards, which can vary by province or municipality. Don’t hesitate to ask how long they’ve been in the trade and about their experience with the specific type of staircase you want.

What are your rates, and how are they structured?

Costs vary depending on staircase type, materials, and complexity. Some stair makers charge a flat rate for a project, while others charge by the hour.

Be sure to ask:

  • Is there a minimum project fee?
  • Are installation and finishing included in the price?
  • Do you charge extra for custom designs or complex structures like spiral or floating stairs?

Can you provide references or reviews?

Stair contractors and companies often have testimonials from previous clients. Whether you look for online reviews or ask for direct references, feedback is one of the best ways to gauge professionalism and craftsmanship.

What’s your availability and project timeline?

If you need a staircase by a certain date, ask how long the design, fabrication, and installation will take. Also, check the stair contractor's cancellation or rescheduling policy to avoid unexpected fees.

Project length depends on design complexity and materials. For example:

  • Standard straight staircase: 3–5 days for fabrication and installation
  • Custom spiral or floating staircase: 1–3 weeks depending on design and finishing
