10/10

Before contacting Johnston I did research on the code requirements, window pricing and of course concrete cutting. I was prepared to do the job myself, even finding a concrete chainsaw to rent. Being a regular guy, I was looking forward to the chainsaw, I mean how much fun does that sound. It cuts CONCRETE, wow. Anyway, cooler heads prevailed (read wife) and several points were to be considered. Time, weather, equipment, price, experience and price (I know it is in twice but it's important). I contacted Erin at Johnston and she was great. Got a price on the phone (excluding taxes) and several dates that an estimate could be done. After spending the night trying to get the chainsaw option in, it was decided to call and book with Johnston. I called Erinn again, and talked about the window size, the options for install and when they could come for the survey/estimate. We decided to book the site survey for the next day. After giving Erin my address, she asked what part of the city my address was, I told her I don't live in Calgary, I'm in Airdrie. Oops, there is a $100 charge to go outside the city. No problem, I did not mention this and the price is great even at $1700. A couple of hours later Erin called to say Trent was in the north part of Calgary and could come out in an hour to have a look. Sounded good to me so we booked. Trent showed at the time mentioned and checked, measured and re-measured inside and out. We had a larger opening than normal, 50" wide, the windows are 48". This would require extra work and materials to make the opening smaller. To be honest, all I seen were dollar signs floating out of my pocket, but Trent said the magic words "at no extra cost". Nice. A couple of hours later Erin called with the official estimate and payment terms. $500 down and the rest at the end of the job. We booked them to start 2 days later. The day before they were due to arrive, Erin called to ask if we would take a 'used' window, full warranty, no scratches etc. Just used for a day then removed. They gave us $50 off the bill. First was the gas line locate by Alberta First Call, then the cutters showed up next day (early even. Go figure). They dug out the window well by hand, not easy in March at -7C, cut the hole and boarded it up. The next day the window installer showed up early again (wow), put in the window, window well and the gravel. Cleaned up the site and the job was done. The window looks great, the install is professionally done, site is cleaner that it was before and a full year of warranty on labour and install and 5 years on the window. I would recommend Johnston without any reservation. Price is great for all the work they do, specifically the digging of the window well (all by hand because of the gas line - NO EXTRA COST). There is still one window left. Maybe I can use that chainsaw yet...

Approximate cost of services:
