Tandem Construction of North Vancouver was undertaking a full renovation of our dated townhouse. They hire only the very best subcontractors as their reputations depends on perfection of the finished product. It was no surprise to me that Tandem hired Powell Painters, also of North Vancouver, to do our painting. Being a diligent homeowner, I had independently sourced painters for the job and also came up with Powell. Hire Powell and you will benefit from their exemplary expertise and customer service. They can assist with chouce of paint colour and finishes. They return to the site in a methodical manner to paint in an order of operations manner. You as home owner benefit from things that Powell has learned over the years such as painting the insides of closets with a special dura

We were undertaking the renovation of a townhouse on Fairview Slopes, Vancouver. Knowing that the kitchen and bathrooms (3) would be big ticket items, we wanted them to be updated in manner that would suit the modernist multi levelled townhouse and our lifestyle. We wanted perfection and we got it! We visited Reynolds' Shop in North Vancouver one Saturday afternoon. We met with designer, Stephanie Kantonen. She listened to our needs and wants while pulling samples of cabinet and counter finishes. She was also getting to know us and we her. We spent around 1.5 hours with Stephanie and by the time we left we were convinced that we would look no further. Reynolds and Stephanie Kantonen had our work. No reservations from us. I might add here that we are a very disxerning couple in our late 60s. We knew what we wanted and we knew that Stephanie and Reynolds would deliver. Stephanie has an impecable sense of design. She was right for the job because she immediately understood the look that we wanted to achieve. Our townhouse was designed in 1983 by the highly accomplished architect, James KM Cheng. Cheng had given us some renovation guidelines to follow. We shared those with Stephanie and even gave her the responsibility of reworking Cheng's signature fireplace. On every occasion we were so impressed by her work. Always meticulous, always commuicative, always on budget and always on time. Take my advice, go to Reynolds in North Vancouver and you won't have to look further. Reynolds has been in business for 49 years. Owner, Jamie Reynolds, is also very hands on with projects. Very highly recommended ***** 5 stars all of the way.

We are a small condo development (13 units) built in 1983. Our sewer lines that run horizontally along the ceiling of the parking garage had never been flushed. We hired Reid Bros. Paul came and did the estimate and the job. Excellent communication, service and excellent work with no fuss no muss. 10/10 all the way.

We hired Woolfgang to renew our townhouse development with power washing and then painting with 2 colour scheme. Scott conducted a thorough estimate with one of the owners and presented the detailed estimate on paper for Strata Council. Everything was clearly outlined and easy to understand. He then presented the plan to interested owners and arranged for a colour test so that owners could be part of the process. The actual work was conducted by Besnik (a master painter & foreman) and a crew that included Xavier (a young Mexican architect) and others. The power washing and painting progressed smoothly, and Woolfgang staff even assisted some elderly home owners with moving heavy articles from patios and decks. Scott was always available by phone and called the on-site owner contact person on a regular basis. There was great attention to detail. The site was left tidy and safe at the end of each day. The crew came every day (and even sometimes on weekends) and stayed until the job was completed with perfection. We couldn't be more pleased with the work and the customer service. 10/10 with no question!

Combined appliances provided prompt, efficient and friendly service at a competitive price. I sent a digital pic so the repairman ordered and brought the piece. They can repair almost any kind of household appliance with the exception of Miele and others like that.

We have 3 American Standard toilets installed originally by a previous owner in 2003 - apparently the "American" version - nothing fancy. However, we had MANY plumbers come to look at one of the toilets in particular as the water seemed to be leaking from the tank and then needed to be filled up again about 10 minutes later. All of the previous plumbers couldn't help and the toilet had to be turned on and off to avoid wasting too much water. The sound was annoying too. This went on for about 1 year. One plumber even suggested that the whole toilet needed to be replaced! Then one day we received an advertisement at our door from McLaren Plumbing. I called Kyle McLaren and did my best to describe the problem with the toilet and how all other plumbers seemed to be miffed. I also sent digital pictures. At the first visit, Kyle immediately figured out that the problem was a small orange rubber seal that had become irregular and was not holding the water in the tank. Besides being a primo diagnostician, Kyle also provided exemplary customer service as the particular seals for our "American" American Standard toilets were not available at any of the regular plumbing supply places in Vancouver. He finally ordered online from Korky and installed new seals in all 3 toilets. He also fiddled with toilet handles and things inside of the other toilet tanks so that everything is perfect now. In summary, KyleMcLaren of McLaren Mechanical provided the following: -Exemplary diagnostics -Exemplary customer service -Exemplary expertise about plumbing products as we discussed installing a new high efficiency water heater in the new year -And all at competitive prices. Don't bother to call anyone else.... Kyle McLaren mclarenmechanical.com P - 778 846 6477 T - @mclarenplumbing mclarenmechanical.com P - 778 846 6477 T - @mclarenplumbing

We had a basement back up - caused by tree roots. Scary stuff was coming up from the basement drain. The Drainworks people came right away and assessed the job with the use of a camera -- much like a medical procedure. They fixed the drain - dug down, removed 80 year old crushed pipes and replaced with plastic ones that will last forever. They put us in touch with the City of Torontp Tree Root inspector who came to examine a root that looked like a tree branch. All Drainworks staff were prompt, courteous, efficient, clean and in general the experience was extremely positive. A special thanks to Armando who oversaw the job and same for a final inspection when the work was finished 1 1/2 days later. Sincerely, Elvira Buttignol Adam Turner Margie Buttignol

July 2008 Albert Hooper was referred to us by our local hardware store for some small jobs around our home (caulking, painting/hanging a bifold door, replacing window glass, changing a light fixture and repairing a downspout). I gave him a $100 deposit when he came to see the work. He said the job would take 2 days. He wrote quotes for the different tasks beside my to-do list and wrote "Paid deposit-cash cheque $100.00" at the bottom of the list. Bookings were cancelled a couple of times by Hooper. Finally he came on August 27th, unprepared and seemingly confused about the work and in general. We were expecting him to bring, for example, the bifold door painted and ready to hang. Now he said the work would take 3-4 days (instead of 2) and asked for more money and the key to our home so he could "come and go". All of this and he had not done any work. We were not willing to give him more money or the key. After a lot of confusion, he went upstairs to measure the window glass. He took out the window frame and then was unable to put in back in again. He said that he would have to leave to get his son at "Spadina and [?]". We made him promise to return within an hour. Hooper and son returned and put the window back into place in 15 minutes. In the meantime, we had come to the conclusion that we did not feel confident that Hooper would do the job as required; moreover, the timing for the job and the pricing seemed to be moving targets. We informed Hooper that we would not be needing his services and asked for the $100 deposit back. When we asked him to leave the house he became agitated and threatening. He said that we owed him money for "the extra man..."[his son who came because Hooper couldn't get the window back in place]. He said that we should have given him a 50% deposit. He also threatened to put a lien on our house. Hooper and son drove off. We contacted our local hardware store to report this incident and requested that they not recommend Hooper. We are also thankful that we can place this complaint here. Thank you, MQ

Any advice to offer fellow homeowners facing a similar project?
Caveat emptor. Knowing this, why were we so gullible?
