We contacted Rick to get an estimate of stripping the old white finish off of my old wood baby dresser (1968) and update it to a more modern look and match our son's current bedroom furniture. We gave Rick one of the drawers to see how easy it would be to remove the current finish, and then Rick even suggested that we cold do the staining ourselves. However, the price from Rick was excellent and we asked them to do the whole project (strip, sand, and stain to match). The final product is amazing. It's hard to believe the transformation from old to new. Our son loves his "new" dresser, and we love the fact that it was "Daddy's" before. Thanks Rick!

We loved the fact that Rick took the time to "try" and strip the item to make sure that the project would be successful. This is good advice to everyone...ask if they can "try" in advance of the big project.

We decided to add hardwood flooring to our recently purchased home (living room, family room, dining room, office, and hall). We shopped around Homestars for the "best of the best" and Frontier was at the top. We visited the Frontier showroom in Vaughan and picked which hardwood we wanted - we asked tons of questions to ensure that our new floor would match the existing hardwood staircase. Frontier explained the "aged" look of the oak and we were sold. Next step was the home visit. Peter came out and explained what would be done, how long it would take, and itemized all the costs so we could determine what we wanted them to do versus ourselves. Frontier sent the quote quickly and we compared to all of the other quotes. Obviously, we picked Frontier. To help save on costs and have a little family fun, we decided to remove the old carpeting ourselves and screw down the sub-floor. After that, we moved everything into the kitchen (felt like a very small apartment). Frontier arrived and quickly got to work. We had a slightly uneven floor in the family room, so Frontier levelled it out and began the transformation. Three days of installation and the place was like new, from old beige carpet to beautiful new oak hardwood. They even put a wood detail in the floor around our gas fireplace to make it stand out. As wood occasionally expands and splitters along the edges, Frontier returned (as promised and warrantied) to fix those boards that needed replacing. Now...months later, no more splitters and the floor looks great. We truly love it. One last comment - get the "in floor vents" (Airwood) - the floor looks soooo much better with them integrated into the hardwood. Great suggestion from Frontier! Work with the company to figure out all the individual costs and determine what you can do versus what you want them to do. In our case, we didn't mind ripping out the old carpet ourselves (great family fun) and then screwing the floor down to prevent future squeaks. Frontier itemized this and were clearly willing to do it, but when we took the plunge to do it, they were great and supportive. Peter and Jack even came by at one point and help find a squeak that we had been chasing. Thanks Frontier!!

We have used Pro Home Building inspection three times. First time was while we were purchasing our house in Aurora (September 2005). Stephen came out and we had a 2-3 hour walk-around the house (attic, roof, etc.). We then sat for about 30 minutes to discuss the results inspection. Stephen was even available for questions long after we had completed the survey. Second time was upon our inspection of our most recent home (April 2008). Pro Home (Luciano) came out and helped us inspect the home. A good job again. Third time was in August 2008. We used Pro Home for our Home Energy Assessment (Tim). Again, they spent the time to inspect our home and show us how we can save energy. Tim was great! Again, thank you to Pro Home Building Inspections!

We have used Woods Electric on three separate occasions. First time was to install dimmers, a timer for our fan, and an LCD TV surge suppressor (behind TV). Second time was to hang a large light in our entranceway (17 foot ceiling - hang light about 9 feet from the floor). Third time was at our new home to again install timers, dimmers, a few extra electrical outlets, and an LCD TV surge suppressor behind the TV. All excellent work...total spent for labour was about $500.

What could this company do to improve their services?
Nothing. They are a good company.

Try and get several electrical projects to be done at the same time. There is usually a flat fee to get them out to the house, but then once they are there, it is cheap to get multiple items done.

This is the second time we have used Ian (Cabinet Man). He did our master closet in our previous home ($1,700) and we liked his work and product so much that we asked him to do our master bedroom closets in our new home (his and hers). Ian is very easy to work with. He listens to your needs, presents you a CAD rendered drawing of the project, and then asks for approval. Work was completed in one day with minimal disruption. This company is highly recommended.

Approximate cost of services:
$2,500.00
What could this company do to improve their services?
None. Ian did an excellent job.

Know what you want your closet to be like before talking to multiple contractors. Each will give you what they feel is best for your closet - in this way, you cannot compare quotes. If one contractor quotes high-end wood, chrome, etc. and the other quotes basic items...you'll never be able to compare. Tell them what you want (as one quote) and ask for their recommendation as a second quote.

We were interested in completing our basement and we interviewed several companies. Domenic from Ultimaterooms.ca visited us and gave us a good description of what we would receive if we used their services. Project started on time and was completed with a beautiful, spacious, open-concept basement with lots of storage space. Exactly what we wanted. Our experience was unique in that we got to see our basement up to the point of framing. At that point, Domenic "locked" us out to complete the basement without our prying eyes (something we freely agreed to and enjoyed). During this time, the basement was completed - drywall added, bathroom finished, closets completed, rooms painted, and floor installed. They did it all with little interruption to us.

Approximate cost of services:
$40,000.00
What could this company do to improve their services?
Only glitch was the selection of the laminate flooring. We had a hard time finding the colour we wanted through the companies that Ultimaterooms.ca used. Instead we found our own supplier and referred them to it. We could have got the flooring through Ultimaterooms.ca, however, the lead time was such that we should have selected it at the beginning of the project. Waiting until the week of the floor install and trying to buy from "in-stock" was not a good idea.
Any advice to offer fellow homeowners facing a similar project?
Plan ahead. We had a good idea what we wanted, how we wanted it to look, and what to expect, and it was still tough at times. We know construction is never easy, but in the end Ultimaterooms.ca gave us the basement we wanted and to our satisfaction.

Company Response

Hi David & Patrycja,

Thanks for the great review. We were more then glad to build your basement for you and are extremely happy you receive the basement you wanted. Although filming a basement durning the renovation sometimes takes a little longer, but the end result was more then worth it. By the way, your episode should be up in the next few days, hope you have as much fun watching it, as we had making it.

Take care and if you need anything, call us!
