5/10

We chose this company because the price started off great (it went up because, apparently, we chose expensive fixtures - don't know what quality of fixture was quoted) and the quote process was thorough and easy for us to understand. We renovated 2 full baths, a powder room and a laundry room. Laundry room and powder room were easy to freshen up and were done to our satisfaction. Bathroom #1 was done well and we are happy, but they tore out tile that was not straight or miss-cut over and over again. Bathroom #2 - shower pan wouldn't drain, so they had to redo it, and plenty of tile was not straight/even in this area as well. Waaaaay over the time estimate (originally slated at five weeks, we ran over by a good four weeks); close to completion they asked for the final payment and we said no, we had agreed on a hold back. The whining commenced, so we ponied up a bit more, but still held some back. Good thing - on 'completion' we had a list of 38 deficiencies, which took another 1-2 weeks to completely finish (plus we got money off the final bill for some tile that they didn't want to tear out and we could live with). The good points about the company included good communication (until the last 3 weeks), work was explained when we asked what/why, the workmen were very respectful of our home (always took their shoes off, didn't smoke in the house, arrived at the home when they said they would, and they cleaned up pretty well every day). Workman were very patient with answering questions, and were very polite. We did have some interesting issues with our reno, and most were handled well. Many times, though, we'd say "you have installed this before", and they would say "no, we haven't seen this tap before" or "never seen this sink before". The not-so-good points include the over run in time and money (budget almost doubled), communication started to break down towards the end, work began to get sloppy (were they rushed or just tired of the job?), the large list of deficiencies, and the overall attitude at the end. A few times, when we went over choices and were asking about if we could save a bit of money here or there, Calgary Bathworks inevitably said to cut out the things that we most wanted (for example, the heated floor. BTW, we kept the floor in the budget, and we love it!). We are really pleased with our new bathrooms - we made excellent choices in the tiles, taps, colours and new footprints of our bathrooms. Could we have found someone that could have had a better quality of work? Probably, especially towards the end. We are very happy that they stuck around to address all our outstanding issues, so that is a huge point in their favour. However, if they would have had consistently high quality in the first place, we would not have had such a long fix list.

Company Response

There must be some confusion here Charlie. We've gone through our records and can't find a job that we've done in the past 10 years with your name on it. You must have us confused with another company.
Sorry to hear you're not happy with your renovation. Although it sounds like they tried to make things right.
