Dec 1st Technician came in very friendly for our contract annual furnace checkup and immediately started asking many strange personal questions about my work and my family
Quickly completely disassembled the furnace and took a few pictures with his phone, with special attention to the manufacture’s tag. No tests were performed.
He was regularly checking emails in his phone and Apple Watch while working
He asked if the furnace was working fine which I confirmed. Then asked date it was installed. I indicated mid 2006
Said furnace had 15 years and needed to be replace immediately because Carbon Monoxide is dangerous and is better not to take any risks given the age of the furnace. I showed him a brand CO alarm by the furnace and he replied that alarms are useless
He said he was issuing a red tag and left the furnace room
I got upset and indicated that I took a contract with Enercare to provide service and repairs in case of problems. He said Enercare was not providing any service for my furnace and pulled out a brochure to show me that 15 year old furnaces had to be replaced. In any case, he added, it would take many months to get any parts for service. I later learned that he was not honest when he said there is no warranty for the heat exchanger as Carrier has a lifetime warranty.
Technician refused to identify itself, did not provide any report or explained the issue. He handed me a red tag by the entrance of the house and left.
It should be noted that he did not shut off the gas to the furnace and left the furnace parts all over the furnace room
My wife called Enercare to ask for help. Besides not being a helpful call, the representative was very keen to get us to rent a furnace while we decided what new furnace we wanted to buy
I believe this is an intentional practice of leaving customers without heating in the middle of winter. Today I learned that a neighbor had exactly the same experience a few months ago and after threatening to sue, his furnace problem was magically solved in 2 days.
