A/C, Gas Line & Humidifier Installation

After moving into a new-build home we went to JC Robinson for the purchase & installation of an A/C unit and humidifier. Our encounter was nothing but positive from the accommodating staff to the quality workmanship. The installation crew were extremely professional and respectful of our home and we will definitely be going back to JC Robinson in the future.

    Furnace Repair

I highly recommend this company for your home furnace and AC needs. The technician called me to troubleshoot first he didn't come out and charge me unnecessarily. And when he did come he explained the problem and gave me options. I like when you call you talk to an actual employee there.

    Furnace & A/C unit

I guess it's time a SATISFIED customer balanced out the reviews from dissatisfied people. I've dealt with J.C. Robinson since the 70s. They've invariably proved reliable, helpful and pleasant to deal with. I have total confidence and wouldn't dream of going elsewhere: peace of mind is priceless.

    Replace old furnace and A/C

After being a customer of JC Robinson for 20 years and being the original installer of our old furnace and A/C, we decided to go back to them for a new replacement. Installation went well and installers were cordial and friendly. They arrived around 10 in the morning and were done by 5 in the afternoon. They seemed to be in a rush as one of them had a course to attend in the early evening. Supposedly everything was working well. An hour after they left I noticed that the furnace had not yet kicked in. It was early May and still chilly outside. Went to see what was going on and within 5 minutes found that the blower fan was jammed. Called the emergency number and the technician that called back said to wait until the next day as it was not freezing out. Fine by me. The next morning the technician shows up and within 5 minutes found that the bracket holding the blower was bent as well as some of the fan blades. Went back into the city to pick up another one and replaced it. Everything is fine. A few days later, decided to test the A/C to make sure that it was working when the time comes. The A/C won't come on. Another service call. Technician shows up next morning and finds that the A/C has been miss wired to the thermostat. Rewires it properly and everything is fine. What happened to the installers making sure everything was working properly before leaving. At the time of purchase, I was advised of provincial rebates and that JC Robinson would be submitting all the paperwork. It would take 6 to 8 weeks to receive my rebate. Six weeks later I receive an email from JC Robinson which states that they have just submitted the paperwork. Due to the tardiness of them doing their job, it will now take 12 to 14 weeks to receive my rebate. I am not happy. Also at the time of purchase I was advised that I would receive a free Carbon Monoxide monitor. Just short of two months later I still don't have it. Email to JC Robinson again to remind them. All through this mess, my wife and I were emailing and phoning the general manager to complain. Always met with some type of excuse, never heard any apologies. To say the least, I am not pleased and if I had to redo this I would not be going to JC Robinson. Major issues with the people in charge not accepting responsibility.

Gas Furnace Repair - Beware of Travel Fee

I had a problem with our gas furnace, the exhaust fan was making a horrible sound, it was certainly dying. I took the fan part number and called JC Robinsons to request replacement and installation of a new fan. Within a few hours a subcontractor from JC Robinsons came to investigate the problem. He did not bring the fan with him. After six minutes, he has confirmed that I was right and that the exhaust fan needs to be replaced. And here the problem began. After making a few phone calls he said that he needs to go to a warehouse to buy the fan. However, JC Robinson will charge me for the travel time to pick up the fan (estimated around 2hrs x $119), installation time (1 hr x 119), fan ($285), plus taxes, that will end in grand total around $700, if everything goes fine. I and my wife were shocked, JC Robinson tried to charge us for travel within Ottawa roughly $270 !!! This is absolutely improper collection practice. I have never heard any contractor, nor a company to charge for travel to pick up required parts, especially if you give them the part number ahead of their visit. What if the part needed to be delivered from another city, would they charge me Xdays x $119, if not how much then? This is ridicules. We asked the JC Robinson subcontractor to go away. He left us with an inspection invoice for $119/hr + tax = $134, which I paid. I complain that it is not right for JC Robinson to charge the travel fee within the same city, and yet the travel fee rate equal to the repairs rate.

    Answer from pro:

I am sorry your experience with J.C. Robinson & Sons was unsatisfactory. I can personally assure you that every service technician J.C. Robinson & Sons employs is an employee and not a subcontractor. For non-warranty service visits we charge an hourly rate. Since your furnace was one that we did not install, we unfortunately do not carry that manufacturer's parts in our service vans. The round trip to the supplier of that brand of furnace was approximately 40 km. Our technician would have probably needed an hour of travel time to pick up the part. I apologize for the miscommunication.

    Emergency Furnace Call

Called the after hours emergency number because it's -9 and the furnace isn't working. The technician that called us back suggested that we crank up the furnace and open the oven until tomorrow to save some money. Completely unacceptable and very dangerous advice to receive from a "professional".

    Answer from pro:

I am sorry your experience with J.C. Robinson & Sons was so unsettling. Our records indicate that you were offered an after hour service visit but you declined. Our technician offered you temporary solutions for heat until the next day when service rates were not at a premium.

    Replace the old furnace

We bought a York furnace and central air systems from JC Robinson and sons couple years ago. It was supposed to be reliable and good quality. We had two incidents that the Furnace was completely shut down due to faulty contral card in the unit during the winter.
