    Driveway snow removal

It is now 1:20 in the afternoon. All driveways had been cleaned by other contractors except Metro driveways by 9AM. He has just cleaned the driveway or rather some of it. He left a nice pile between passes and I can't understand why. We paid to have the entire driveway cleaned as I recall. I am very disappointed in the service. He does this ALL THE TIME! Why?

    Answer from pro:

Excuse me? We went out and cleared your driveway and every other driveway starting at 2 pm ( the day before!) when every other snow contractor in Ottawa stayed home for New Years eve. Every client had a 'clearing pass' before 8 pm when 8 cm had fallen. We THEN went out again between 7am and 2 pm and did a second pass....(when the competition was just starting for the storm at 7am New Years Day) Sorry Ron, on this one you are off the mark. I follow my guys, Im out there during storms, I check off their progress and follow them on GPS. Basically....at 7am the next day our driveways had about 2 cm in them.....from after we started the day before. The comps driveways, yes, may have been slightly cleaner because...they were just finally showing up for the storm. If you were one of the few clients that may have been completely missed (yes there's always one or two inevitably missed or have their cars still in the driveway) then I apologies of course but lets get the true facts out there. Thanks Ken

    Unacceptable Level of Service

This company has lost sight of the business they're in and the service they've agreed to provide. They are not clearing snow in a timely enough fashion to make the service worth what I've paid for it. I don't really care how tech savvy they are and how many alerts or emails they can provide. I have contracted to have my driveway cleared of snow. So far, they're always late, or don't show up for more than 24 hours after a snowfall. This will be my last year with them.

    Answer from pro:

(Read my other replies......maybe you will understand) "Not timely enough for you". We clear well within the times stated. Every time. Ken

    Recent Service

Feeling let down! Have been an Appleseed client for approx 15 years. There has been many letters and emails from Ken explaining the new Metro name but they are not consistent. The service in past years has been awesome. I'm not sure if the recent changes are causing growing pains maybe? The GPS tracking system seem less than accurate we have received no less than 3 "alerts" yet seen no tractor. It seems like only 4 houses on our street have been missed. We have called several times and left messages with client service staff. Each time we have been reassured our concern would be addressed each time I have specifically asked for a return call and received zero info. I've worked in the snow business my self so believe me I get it. I'm just asking for a reasonable response time and a return call. The call centre is pointless unless they can provide me with updated info. Hoping to hear from you Ken.

    Answer from pro:

I get it Gill. Its not 'growing pains'....we employ more 'technology' then any other snow contractor in the business to 'communicate' to our clients. The GPS alerts are a tricky science and constantly have to be tweaked. If you let me know your street I can reveiw your driver and his route and time records. Its rare he would ever 'miss' 4 houses on the same street? Id like to review this. Regarding 'phone messages' Ive stated upfront as many times as I can to clients..'we dont return phone calls'...email is the way we respond to issues and complaints. Here's the deal with 'phone calls' in the snow business......80% of clients DONT think to leave their address in the phone message! Cryptic phone messages like 'you missed me'? 'Are you coming?' Dont really help us...so...we have to take the time to "look up whoand where you live' based on name or phone number.......'call back'..(no awnsering machine available) ...nobody awnsers ect and we waste time playing 'phone tag' during a storm trying to answer someone's questions or figuring out who the person even is! Basically....email is faster, its in writing, we have a record and it's easier to print, hand to a Customer Rep and gets dealt with immediatley. I take a lot of heat for.....not calling back 'during a snowstorm' but most other companies....siimply leave a message and turn off their phones! Maybe thats the way to go? I don't believe so. We will try to do better.....send me your street or address. Ken Dale President

    Metro snow and ice

The absolute worst service ever. I live in the Carlingwood area, and have seen the competition clearing driveways in a timely manner. I cannot say the same for Metro snow and ice. This latest snow fall is a classic example. At 9:30pm. my drive way is still not done. Ken, the owner even went on the local news the night of Ottawa's first storm to tell everyone how prepared the were. Funny thing, they never showed up. I will never book with these guys ever. 284 cm of snow so far. 3 visits for Metro. Terrible.

    Answer from pro:

Sorry you feel you've had issues. Ive checked your address and the GPS records. You HAVE in fact even visited every single snow fall sir. Not just as 'quick as you demand'. Wjhike the competition may do your street before us, we are in anoither area before the competition. 284 cm? Hardly. If you exaggerate here with the snowfall amount, I'm sure your claims are exaggerated a bit too.

    BAD SERVICE WITH METRO!

It's been over 24 hours since the snow has stopped. My laneway is covered in snow and the city plow has left a big pile at end of laneway.I have called Metro 3 times! All you get is an answering service!Very poor service!Avoid Metro!I'm going to cancel my contract with them!Everyone else in my neighborhood has had their laneway done.

    Answer from pro:

Sorry you had an issue. Either your driveway was missed by oversight or he was there very early into the storm and did not return. Do you have marker stakes in your driveway? No excuses on this one. We did everyone on your street so either he missed it, there were cars in your driveway or on the street preventing him. A little rash cancelling because he missed you once in 5 storms in successsion? But that's your right. If you change your mind, provide at least the street you are on then I can try to access the situation with the drive. Just a first name and last initial doesnt really help me. Metro (Appleseed) Fair And Honest Review

We used to use Appleseed / now Metro - but we don't anymore. The company rates seemed reasonable enough, and they were generally reliable in that they didn't just take the money and leave you hanging dry. The company does an ok job at communicating, but the notes they send are a bit quirky perhaps. We quit because of a few things: the service was not timely enough. It's too late if we have to leave in the morning and the plow is not yet done (but was explained it would be done during the day). On heavy snowfall days, we would be often waiting hours - up to 36/48, for clearing to be done. That made us feel "stuck" in our home. we could have cleared much it faster the old fashioned way, before too much snow had accumulated. Then often we would get notes that the drivers were "fatigued" and needed to take a break. Sorry, for us that rung hollow. It's time to work flat out, during a few days of the winter with frequent rest in between. Then there were the sub 5cm snow days. Many of those - so we were often shovelling ourselves. Then the final problem for us was the late winter snowfalls that weren't cleared - as it appears that warmer weather was in the forecast and it would just melt off. It should have been cleared. So -- too much management for us. Would also like to know how TouchPlow one-time folks are queued up vs. those with full winter contracts. Not sure about that.

    Answer from pro:

Thanks for the balanced reveiw. Sorry your're not with us this winter. To answer your questions...over a 36 hr period 'every' driveway is cleared at least once. Its policy and if you are early in the route you were probably cleared near the beginning of his route and much more snow fell prior to his second visit. City grader dumps are unpredictable at the best times but they do their best to chase them. Regarding 'working flat out'. I work the drivers between 14-18 hours straight with small breaks. They need rest or they will miss driveways, possibly damage property and....it's the law! I do call in several 'backups' to drive through each zone looking for missed areas while your driver is taking a short 4 hour rest. We actually supply "sleeping bunk trailers' in our yards for 'quick naps'. Many drivers are rural farmers from out of town and to send them all the way back for a 4 hour rest is not practical. JWith very expensive equipment of course I want it out 'clearing snow' as much and as long as possible. It serves no one (including me) to have tractors sit idle in the yards. Lastly, TouchPlow is a completely different service and has no effect on our snow clearing. To be frank I can count on one hand in 2 years how many tractor drivers of mine have even accepted a job. These ' TouchPlow jobs' are usually picked up by a 'man with plow' who can drive quickly from job to job. My tractors cant and they are on a 'designated routes & timeline' so they simply cant do those jobs during storms. Hope this helps Ken Dale President

1st time with Metro/Appleseed, disappointing so far

I recently moved to Barrhaven and went with who I saw many of my neighbours were using despite the poor feedback I had read online about Appleseed (now rebradnded as Metro which I suspect is due to all the bad feedback as Appleseed.) My coworker warned me about using them as he said their service is terrible but I ignored him. Of the 3 or 4 snowfalls that dictated plowing per their contract, they missed the first 2 and I ended up shoveling my own driveway. Not once has my driveway been plowed before I leave for work (8am) even though I notice other driveways have been plowed (by other companies.) My previous experience was with JR Snow in Gloucester and they were excellent, they have set a standard that Metro doesn't seem to compare to. Prior to that I lived in Montreal and every person on my street had snow removal and every snowfall my driveway was cleared before I left for work and before I came home from work, that is how a quality snow removal service works. (Oh yeah and it was only $270 for a doublewide driveway there.) If I continue to have to shovel myself out every snowfall I'll be looking for a different company next season. On top of that they seem to leave 4-5 feet of unplowed snow at the top of my driveway. I get that they're being cautious but they're not even close. Then there's the 3 feet of snow from the markers which I shoveled out myself so they would start sticking to the path.

    Answer from pro:

Thank Scott, sorry your are not happy with us thus far...we will improve each storm as every snow company does. I rebranded Appleseed to Metro not because of bad reviews Scot. (Appleseed has an A+ rating with the BBB) We 'don't gaurantee' clearing your driveway before 8am...never have, never will. This is a strong misconception amount 'new client' new to using a snow clearing service. If 5-8 cm of snow falls between 5am and 8 am how can any company possible clear everyone out by 8am? Our service contracts clearly state the Thresholds' we follow for timeline and clearing. People sign up last minute, sign contracts and simply fail to read ( or just ignore) the terms for clearing. They 'assume' it snows, bang, we're there. It depends on where you actuall fall on the drivers routes. We strive to get a clearing done for everyone by either 6am or 6 pm depending on the accumulation, timing and city graders. With a full name or even a street name I can reveiw where you are on the list and the service levels with the field manager and actual driver. Thanks Ken Dale President

    Great Service

When I moved to Barrhaven nine years ago, I became a client of Appleseed Snow Blowing. I have been extremely pleased with the service they have provided during that time. The e-mail alerts and tractor alerts are part of their great service. I always enjoy reading Ken's emails ... he has a great sense of humour. Now that they have become Metro Snow and Ice Management, I know that I will continue to receive the same excellent service. The driver looking after customers in my area is doing a great job and I really appreciate his hard work. When I lived in Kanata, I had the unfortunate experience of being a customer of a company that decided to suddenly cease operations and leave their customers with no service during a rather large snow storm. It is so nice to know that I am dealing with a company who values their customers as well as their employees. Keep up the great work.

    Answer from pro:

How nice! Thanks so much Dianne. Nice to here from a long time client who 'gets it' with the timing and service delivery.

Only partial completion of contracted services, no response from company

Posting here as I see the president responds when rating is zero. I've called FIVE times in two weeks to report a missed clearing , no call back, no clearing. Help? 2016-12-20 update: I've corrected the location info to reflect Ottawa. I emailed you personally as you indicated I could do (in the email you sent to customers yesterday). I sent you the first email yesterday with all the details, and another email a few moments ago. I'm confused though - the email I received advising I could email you personally - the email address it contained is the office email address? If your staff look after that mailbox and it is not you personally, have them send you the email with subject "Homestars website review". I look forward to your assistance in helping me resolve my issue so I can change my review rating. I apologize for using a negative social media review to get your attention but I'm frustrated.

    Answer from pro:

No idea who you are...'Patricia in Toronto?'...If you actually 'leave an address' then I can actually 'try to help you'....people seem so quick to 'leave a 0 review, no address, no way to follow up' on Homestars. This is a site for 'constructive reveiws' not a 'message board. Don't 'hide behind' social media to vent or correct an isssue.....at least leave a 'street'?...every 0 review here wont even mention the 'street' they are on so I can review your file and complaint. We've stated openly and clearly....'email is the best way to communicate issues with us'...you don't mention emailing once? It leaves a 'paper trail' for us to track. Hardly seems fair does it? I'm not defensive here just realistic. We're not your small man with truck snow clearing company. We are large, very well organized and equipped snow organization. We service over 9,000 customers here in Ottawa through 6 different offices, (and very well! I might add) so a few 0 complaints from 'new customers' who 'don't get it' or 'how a snow clearing company operates' while frustrating doesnt imply any sort of 'trend' whatsoever. Ps: 5 times in 2 weeks?.....you were NOT missed! We simply didnt arrive at your home as 'fast as you wanted us there'! There's a big difference 'Patricia". BTW...unfair again!...I've responded to EVERY review on here...good OR bad so your opening statement is rather wrong. Ken
