We had hired DBK for a bathroom reno, building upon their Tub Special. We added some features like 2 grab bars and a niche. The design and the workmanship of the carpenter, tiler and plumber was excellent, I would give it a 5 Star. However, we had problems with the management when things departed from a smooth flow of things. If the reno involves the removal of tiles and drywall, an asbestos test has to be done on the drywall and drywall compound to ensure that the workers doing this, work in a save environment. Unfortunately, our test turned out positive. This apparently happens often when the building dates from before the mid 1980s. In this case, DBK assigns the removal and disposal part of the work to a subcontractor who specializes in this work. I was amazed at the cost of doing this necessary work, but on my own called a contractor who normally does this kind of job, in order to get a typical cost for such work. I was given a typical price for a typical installation around a bathtub. As it turned out, the contractor then realized that I was talking about the job contracted to them by DBK and gave me the exact cost they had charged DBK. My dispute with DBK concerns the large difference in these prices. So, my advice to potential customers of DBK is, if you have a building built before the mid 1980s and might therefore have asbestos in the drywall or compound, BE AWARE and pay close attention to what you may encounter dealing with DBK management.

My first interaction with Andre was very positive, he seemed very knowledgeable and asked questions about the age and history of the home. He also said he only did one project at a time, and didn't start the next one until the previous was complete to our satisfaction. This feeling did not last very long once we had paid the deposit for the renovation. The original scheduled start date was in November. In October we received an email that it was delayed until February. Actual work didn't start until mid March. We agreed at the start of the project that if he needed to stay late if he was going to waste material (like grout or cement). What happened instead was he showed up most days between 10am-1pm and stayed 6-10 hours. Halfway through the project I clarified that I only wanted him in the house between 9-6 and the extra leeway was only for special circumstances. He came on time one day and returned to arriving between 10-1 after that. When demolition started, we was surprised that the walls of the 1930's home were not drywall, and had not heard of rocklathe that the walls were actually made of. He was also surprised the tub was made of cast iron. Both of which he charged more for above the quote price and added 1 week on the 2 week project. Once the bathroom was almost done, I had messaged him to confirm I was able to use the tub which he had tested. Once it drained, I noticed the ceiling below the tub was leaking, the original pipe was held together with epoxy and had come loose from the renovation. Another added cost, and I had to replace my own ceiling, he wanted to charge more and he was behind on the next job. He also moved the bathroom light switch to inside the bathroom, which was also not tested (it turned off all lights upstairs). The light switch move was a line item in the quote and paid for, but when I told him about it he would not entertain fixing the issue. In the end I will need to change this myself, even through I have paid for it and is a line item on the "add-on" quote. Other short nitpicks: - He did not install a shower curtain rod (not specifically called out in the job, but I had assumed that would be included) - Tiles not all flush with the wall, some sticking out - Did not get the tub we wanted, apparently it was out of stock on back order (we paid him the deposit 1 year before the work started) - Shower head was not installed well, o-ring was crushed and was leaking. Luckily I was going to replace with a different head so it was an easy fix The frustrating part is the bathroom itself is well done. If the Andrei and Jessica had just given an accurate quote from the beginning and did the work they said they would it would be a 9-10 star review. They are both very personable and very good hard working people. In the end, I would have been better off with a different company who quoted higher but had explicitly called out the complexity of working on an older home and likely wouldn't have had the surprise cost.

Install or renovate bathroom- 24 Oct 2026
Amir and his crew are so hardworking. They gutted and renovated my small bathroom (less than 50 sq ft) during the hottest July ever, in my small house. The toughest part was working with very delicate glass tiles, which they cut by hand, one by one. A meticulous job. They are kind people who I always looked forward to seeing each day. They checked in after the project to fine tune things as well. Take a look at this tile job in the photo. Thanks so much, Amir & Crew!

What to Ask Before You Hire a Countertops Specialist Near You

Before hiring a countertops specialist, it’s important to ask the right questions. From experience and pricing to materials and installation methods, knowing what to look for ensures you get the most value from your kitchen or bathroom project.

Here are some essential questions to ask when choosing an available worktop installer:

What types of countertops and materials do you work with?

Not every specialist handles the same materials. Some focus on granite, quartz, or marble, while others also install laminate, solid surface, or composite worktops. Ask if they can handle custom shapes, integrated sinks, or edge profiles.

Are you insured and certified?

It’s essential to hire someone with public liability insurance. This protects both you and the installer in case of accidental damage during the project. Confirm that they are experienced with your chosen material and follow local building codes and safety standards.

What are your rates and how are they structured?

Costs can vary depending on the material, complexity, and size of your project. Some installers charge by the square foot, while others use a flat project fee.

Be sure to ask:

Is there a minimum project size or fee?
Are template, cutting, and installation included in the price?
Are custom features like waterfall edges or integrated sinks extra?

Can you provide references or reviews?

Worktop installers with experience will have testimonials or past project photos. Checking reviews or asking for direct references helps gauge their craftsmanship and reliability.

FAQs: Your Questions About Countertops Specialists Answered

Can worktop installers handle custom shapes and integrated features?

Yes—but confirm their experience with complex installations, such as islands, curved edges, or sinks integrated into stone or quartz surfaces.

How long does worktop installation take?

Time depends on material and complexity:

Standard kitchen countertop (straight run): 1–2 days
Custom features or multiple rooms: 2–5 days

What happens if the countertop is damaged during installation?

Accidents are rare, but a professional countertop installer should have insurance or a clear process to address damage. Confirm they will notify you immediately and cover any repairs or replacements.

Do worktop installers handle removal of old countertops?

Many do, but not all. Ask whether disposal is included and if there are extra charges for heavy stone or hazardous materials.

Are warranties included?

Ask about both workmanship and material warranties. Most experienced installers offer guarantees ranging from 1 year on labour to lifetime or manufacturer warranties on the worktop material.
