Demolition work- 29 Sep 2025
We hired this contractor to demolish a wall that was separating our family room from the dining room. The scope of work was clear from the beginning and the timelines were met, as described. We appreciate how prudent the contractor was in ensuring all was in order to proceed with the work, once we learned what was behind the wall. This contractor is reliable, committed to a high standard of delivery, and an excellent communicator. Will hire again!

Install concrete floor- 25 Sep 2025
The team kept to schedule, and the concrete blocks were neatly installed with a solid foundation. However, IMO, the steps were poorly designed with an unnecessarily steep pitch and narrow steps that made the walk up from the street to the house more strenuous than needed. I raised this, but was met with resistance and had to push for a solution—ultimately paying extra to have them redone more adequately. Within months, several steps came loose. I was told to wait for better weather (no major concern was shown). After they glued the loose steps, others came undone. This time I fell and hit my face on the concrete step. No apology was offered. The second re-gluing was rushed, left glue stains, and cleanup only happened after I asked them to return to clean it. Communication became tense, and I felt increasingly dismissed. I grew tired of treating them as if they were the client. Today, I’ve lost trust in MDPA. My lawyer suggested legal action, but I’ve held off if the steps fail again.
Matthew Hill
Rating: 5 out of 5
Plumber in York, Ontario
Dear Homeowner, My name is Matt, and I’m an independent contractor and handyman based in Toronto. I hold a Bachelor of Arts degree and a College of Trades certificate, with 9 years of experience working in the construction industry. I love working directly with clients, take pride in my workmanship, and prioritize customer satisfaction. I offer a diverse range of services and skills. Recently, I’ve completed several bathroom renovations, basement remodels, and large fence and deck installations. However, I don’t mind taking on smaller maintenance and repair jobs to fill in days between larger projects. I am proficient in the following skills: demolition, insulation, rough framing, finish carpentry/trim, siding, fences, decks, retaining walls, window/door installations, laminate flooring, all types of tiling, concrete pours, bricklaying, parging, laying pavers, stone walkways, driveway resurfacing and repairs, drywall and mudding, staining and painting, weatherproofing, landscaping and yard maintenance, power washing and cleaning services, and repairing eaves/shingles/flashing. I also perform some electrical and HVAC work, though I have a skilled group of tradesmen who can assist on short notice if needed. Additionally, I guarantee my work with a varying warranty period for certain projects, ensuring peace of mind and lasting results. I can provide references and photos of work upon request, and can provide free estimates after discussing any projects over the phone. Alternatively, I charge $70 per hour for jobs that are difficult to price out.

Install or replace gate for driveway and security- 18 Aug 2026
Matt did a fantastic job building a gate for my backyard. He went above and beyond the initial scope of the project—communicating with me at every stage—to ensure the gate looked great and functioned well, and to address other critical issues, including nearby water drainage and levelling the paving stones. I recommend Matt so highly that I will continue to employ him on several additional projects. I'm extremely pleased with the quality of his work, his professionalism, his communication skills, and his initiative and creativity.

We initially engaged Monaco looking for a designer for a major reno but decided to hire them for the whole job (design/architecture + construction) because Revi appeared knowledgeable, and it seemed like a good idea to hire one team to do it all. It started off well but was ultimately an incredibly frustrating experience. It has now been a year since completion, so weve had a chance to live in our new home and reflect. The construction began on schedule. Nine days after they began, demolition was completed, the support beam was in place, the new walls were framed out, the utilities were run, and all the initial permits were closed. At that point, we were very optimistic. The core construction team, led by Steven, was competent. As a result, a year later, there have been no structural issues. The problems started to mount when we got to the finishings. There were two major sources of problems mediocre sub-contractors, and Revis disinterest in our project and argue now, fix later attitude. It became clear that Revi had delegated our job to her assistant (without informing us prior to signing the contract) and did not feel a sense of ownership of our job. There were several large mistakes made throughout construction incorrect kitchen cabinetry, backsplash tiles, interior doors, hardware, mismatched stain on the stairs and landings, amongst others. While we were sold on a process that focused on quality assurance, we found ourselves doing the job for them, and the most frustrating part was that each time we found a mistake, there would always be an argument before it was fixed. The mismatched stairs incident is the best example of this. We pointed out from the day it was done that there was a problem with the colour to anyone who would listen. Instead of coming and seeing it with her own eyes, Revi argued with us for two weeks by email, citing the contract that said the stairs/landing may not be a perfect match to the flooring, questioning whom we informed (it was everyone), claiming that it couldnt be fixed Until she saw it with her own eyes and immediately recanted. So much stress could have been saved if she had just taken ownership of our job. It felt like she did not get to know us to the extent necessary to do a good job. For example, she had our house painted in a beautiful high end matte paint that looks great and wears terribly. This would have been a good choice for a larger home or one without children, but in our small and spirited house, it looks dirty and needs repainting a year later. Then there were the problems with sub-contractors. I had a month of stress because the electrician, to get out of 30 minutes of work, claimed that our ceiling fans could not be wired the way they had been safely wired for years prior, and Revi argued back and forth, telling us her contractor wouldnt do it because it could cause a fire .. until we got another licensed electrician to write a statement saying she was wrong. Similarly, before paying Revi an additional amount to have her painter fix water staining around our skylights, we paid her roofer to inspect to ensure there was no active leakage. He inspected three times during the reno (once for a separate issue) and found none of the glaring issues which caused leaking within months, damaging our newly finished ceilings. Since the construction ended last summer, we have reached out with several issues and most have been dealt with. However, we were not able to solve the problems caused by the aforementioned leaking due to repeated incompetence by their roofing contractor. In trying to get her to remedy this, she once again cited the contract without understanding the situation, and then finally offered to fix it, but in her offer included an insane ChatGPT generated agreement that sounds like a fake lawyer wrote it, that says she will fix it if we promise not to reflect upon our experience publicly. And because my silence is worth more than some ceiling repairs and paint, we are here today telling you we would not hire her again.

Install or repair water heaters- 16 May 2025
I did an extensive review of contractors on Homestars who specialized in the supply and installation of tankless water heaters. There were many impressive options to choose from but I eventually settle on MMS Heating & Cooling. The glowing reviews and the impression I got from my initial interaction with Matt was the deciding factor. The quote I received from him was reasonable and competitive. He came across as professional, knowledgeable, responsive , accommodating and courteous. They arrived punctually to start the work as per our agreement and did an outstanding job. They completed the job on time exactly as Matt had indicated they would. The water heater was professionally and neatly installed without any issues or problems. I would have no hesitation in recommending MMS and Matt for any of the services they render. Thank you Matt.
