    Partial Basement Renovation

Tony does good work. However, his work is intermittent. After 15 months, (counted from the start of demolition, and moving forward) the project was only half finished. Before the 15-month mark, I had asked for a modest expansion to the project. After asking several times, Tony refused to provide a revised estimate and an approximate completion date. Sometime later, he left the project. While he was on the project, Tony prided himself on getting the best price. Here is an example of his work. Tonys estimate for the following line item: carpet removal and disposal, $800. Of all the contractors and sub-contractors I spoke with after Tony left, no one estimated more than $325. Here is another documented example of Tonys work. Of all the contractors and sub-contractors I spoke with after Tony left the project, no one estimated more than $3,400 for priming + 2 coats of paint. Tonys estimate was $3,500 for priming only! Of the dozen or so contractors and subcontractors I spoke with after Tony left the project, all of them provided complete estimates and approximate project completion dates. Fortunately, after Tony left the project, I was able to connect with individuals/groups who completed the second half of the project in 6 weeks. Finally, Tony has acknowledged owing me hundreds of dollars, related to electrical work that I paid for and that was not completed. He still has not paid me back. Please note that I modified this review to make it a little more water-tight against the string of fabrications posted by Tony in his company response.

    Answer from pro:

Richard, while i appreciate you acknowledge we do good work as you have in an earlier review (10/10 Richard from Toronto) you are not painting an accurate picture. Your partial basement project was quoted and priced, It was outside your budget and we regrettably engaged in a piecemeal approach after much back and forth that lasted almost 11 before even starting the demo. Fortunately we were able to help with your demo, steel beams and framing . I suggested that we would provide a price for all drywall and priming then send my carpenter to finish up because she was more affordable and could do your painting and misc. items. You loved this idea and submitted payment for all the custom grills and access panels. Without any deposit towards drywall and after disappearing for months we learned that you subsequently hired my carpenter to finish your project and are now requesting a refund. (April 2023 on an invoice you paid in August 2022) As a reminder this is what your invoice read prior to us even placing any order " Custom merchandise is non-refundable. All sales of custom merchandise are final. No item will be ordered by Mixedesigns until the Purchase Order has been approved by the Client, and returned to Mixedesigns with the required payment equal to 100% (one hundred percent) of the Purchase Price." We are not a delivery service, we have been storing your product and have sent multiple emails.

    Home transformation project

I don't normally write reviews as I'm not easily impressed but want to recognize Tony and the Mixedesigns team for their fantastic work. They are professional, honest, courteous and deliver high quality results. We had gutted our home down to the frame and with Tony and his team's help, transformed it into an amazing space to be enjoyed with family and friends for years to come. We're so thankful to have come across Tony - he is amazingly creative but can also execute and bring his ideas to life with relentless attention to detail and perfection. In this crazy environment where all construction / reno companies are extremely busy, that level of attention to detail is nearly impossible to find. We also appreciate that when issues came up with various outside trades (which will 100% happen in any reno project), Tony was on our side and helped ensure everything was made right. We've enjoyed our experience and the relationship built with them so much that subsequent to the main floor being complete, we've asked them to come back and help us with phase 2 (basement transformation). Needless to say we'd highly recommend them to family and friends.

4 Months Later - still FANTASTIC

It has been about 4 months since our reno. These guys were INCREDIBLE. Firstly, Tony came personally to help with design, consulting, and the some of the work. He listened to our concerns, especially around having dust in the house given that we have a baby. He put in special flooring protectors on the stairs and hallways, put in a commercial dust removed in the room, and made sure that even the debris was double bagged in bags and removed a day later so the dust would have settled. His team was very professional, courteous, and wore masks. When he installed the air cleaner (Huge, 50+ pounds), he used plastic sheets to create negative pressure through a window, which he also had an exhaust tube escape. This guy does things PROFESSIONALLY - not half-assed like many others have (my experience). The work was top notch - he was not happy until you were happy. Extremely responsive, and he finished ON TIME. We used the Design Bar - and glad we did. They really helped us put our design together and it looks phenomenal. Tony even helped patch up minor parts of our drywall in other areas of our house! This was out of scope and was happy to help. We will use Tony again for any other projects we have, I suggest that you as well. It has been four months since we had the work done and NO ISSUES. We had a total bathroom destroy + rebuild - moving the toilet and everything. NO leaks, NO issues, and looks FANTASTIC. We even added a fan, new outlets, more sinks, etc. Overall fantastic job. Tony went out of his way to make sure we were happy - and trust me, I'm "That Guy" who's very particular. If *I* am happy ("The caulking on the countertop isn't uniform, look how it's thick here and thin over there"), then I'm sure you will. Tony left us with a smile, and most importantly, a CLEAN HOUSE every day.

    Bearing wall removal

When I started out with my home Reno my biggest concern was who to call to remove two bearing walls. Like most, I’ve watched many Reno shows like Holmes on Holmes and have seen the nightmares some people have gone through, even when the home owner has done there due diligence. I was referred to Tony (Mixed Designs Building Group) by my engineer. When I first spoke with Tony over the phone he was very friendly and up front and discussed what was entailed and approx cost. The first visit Tony came out to see my home and surprisingly offered other ideas to help reduce costs and still get the open concept I was looking for. After sometime considering the options I decided to go ahead with the original plan and have two steel flush beams installed. Tony came out and took measurements and we spoke about some issue that could arise when the installation began. One of them being that we may not be able to hide the steel posts that support the beams completely in a wall due to where the posts must land as per the engineer Drawings. Tony quickly offered solutions and even when i didn’t like it he didn’t give up, he just found another way to make me happy and still follow the engineer’s specifications. When the time came for installation Tony was on time every single day. He and his crew(Patrick) were very respectful of me and my home. They were always extremely careful when working and moving the lifts and beams in the house. They always tried to keep dust down and tidy while they worked. My house fought them almost every step of the way....Tony never gave up. Any other contractor would have given up and said that’s the way it has to be and walked away. Not Tony, he is meticulous...he says he has OCD..LOL. When he has a plan he will fight to the death to make that happen. He will not take short cuts. I myself am very handy and meticulous but when I said “your not building furniture “ Tony didn’t except that. Everything has to look clean and neat, even if it will end up behind drywall. Now that is a high standard that you don’t find in most contractors. Even when he thought there was no way around a problem but could see I wasn’t happy he called the engineer and found a way to make it work. Tony is very open and doesn’t hide anything. He made many phone calls during the week with the engineer and with some flooring suppliers to see if he could get me a better price and it was always on speaker phone. I could hear everything, there was never a thought that he was marking a price up or trying to hide something. He is very honest, excellent at what he does, and respectful. I can’t say enough about Mixedesigns . Tony is a TRUE PRO! who really cares about his clients and business reputation. I could go on and on... but I will just say this. If your someone who watches Holmes on Holmes and always wonder how do I find an honest contractor who will complete the job at the highest standards then look no further. Mixedesigns Building Group covers it all. Best of all they are Honest, Respectful, Cost is on par with other contractors and they provide a superior finished product that not many other contractors would be able to achieve because most other contractors don’t care enough to bother or have the skill set to achieve the high quality that Mixedesigns can offer. Thanks Mixed Designs I will be calling you for my other home Reno projects.

    Best. Contractor. Ever.

High quality. Attention to detail. High standards! Everything you get when you sign up with Tony and Kelly’s MixedDesign team! I completed all the necessary requirements to legalize my basement as a second unit. Needless to say, it was a disaster zone that needed to be put back together. Multiple Floors missing, drop ceiling taken down, missing walls/tiles and a kitchen that was nonexistent. There was no way I was going to be able to search for more contractors to finish the immense amount of work to be completed, and I was already way past my expected completion date. I was recommended MixedDesign from a friend and never looked back. I trusted Tony and his team 100% while I was not at home and they delivered Everything I needed and more. Honestly, the basement looks better than our upstairs now! Tony and his team are the reason the financial burden of our mortgage is now easier to carry. The basement was rented out after a week and everyone that came through was blown away by the look as compared to other basement apartments. I even had multiple offers! Thank you MixedDesign and I look forward to working with you again! I highly recommend everyone work with them!

    Answer from pro:

So happy you got multiple offers, it's reassuring to know that our extra effort paid off-literally!

Consultation for Possible First Floor Renovation

Tony came to consult on a possible first floor renovation. I had been putting off the renovation because it was feeling overwhelming and I didn't know where to start. He had a lot of amazing ideas on how the space could be more efficient, and stylistic ideas to help the house stand out in case of selling it down the road. I was very happy with his honesty and integrity about the challenges I might face either from a financial perspective, or a design perspective. Looking forward to the next step of my first floor renovation.

Thanks Sarah, always happy to share ideas- can't wait to get started!!
