Why Should You Hire a Pro for Garage Door Installation vs. DIY?

Whether you're replacing an aging door, upgrading your opener, or dealing with broken springs, hiring a contractor who does installation for garage doors means the work gets done safely, efficiently, and to a standard that lasts. Here are a few reasons why:

  • Safety: Garage door springs and heavy panels can cause serious injury if mishandled, making professional installation the safer choice for you and your family.
  • Time and stress saved: A pro can complete most installations in just a few hours, sparing you a frustrating DIY weekend and the risk of costly mistakes.
  • Proper fit and function: Professional installation ensures your door is correctly aligned, calibrated, and synced so it operates quietly and reliably from day one.
  • Warranty protection: Many manufacturers require professional installation to keep your product warranty valid, protecting your investment if something goes wrong later.

Hiring a pro to help you with your garage door installation is the best course of action for several reasons. Post your project on HomeStars now to find the help you need!

What to Ask Garage Door Installation Pros Near You Before Hiring

When hiring for door installation near you, asking the right questions can help you make an informed decision before choosing who you work with.

Here’s a list of questions you can ask before committing:

Do you carry liability insurance and workers’ compensation coverage?

This protects you if something goes wrong during the job or a worker is injured on your property. Don’t hesitate to ask for proof.

Do you offer a written warranty, and what does it cover?

Make sure you understand the difference between the manufacturer's equipment warranty and the contractor's labour warranty, and how long each one lasts.

Do I need a permit, and will you handle obtaining it?

If structural changes are involved, such as widening the opening or altering the framing, a permit may be necessary. Ask your contractor upfront whether your project requires one and whether they'll acquire it on your behalf. A contractor who is familiar with local building requirements should be able to answer this confidently and clarify in a quote whether it’s included or a separate charge.

How long will the installation take from start to finish?

Most garage door installations take two to four hours, but this can be stretched by finding unexpected issues, complex installs, or removing and disposing of an old door. It's worth asking whether the quoted timeframe includes setup and cleanup, and whether they foresee anything about your specific situation that could extend the job.

How should I prepare for installation?

Depending on the scope of the installation, your contractor may need clear access to the garage interior, the door opening, and your driveway. Move your car out ahead of time and relocate any tools, bins, or belongings near the entrance. It's also worth asking your contractor whether they'll need access to your electrical panel, as opener installations typically require a nearby outlet and may involve some minor wiring work.

Do you also handle insulation?

Some garage specialists include insulation as part of the installation, while others don't offer it at all. It's worth clarifying upfront, especially if you plan to use your garage as a workspace, home gym, or hobby area rather than just for parking and storage.

FAQ: Your Questions About Garage Door Installation Answered

Will my contractor dispose of my old garage door?

Disposal practices vary from one contractor to the next, so it's always worth confirming before work begins. Some include removal and disposal in their quote, while others treat it as an add-on, and a few may leave it to you entirely. Asking upfront avoids any surprises on installation day and helps you budget accurately.

Can a contractor help me choose the right door for my home?

Most garage door contractors are well-versed in the options available and can walk you through choices based on your budget, climate, insulation needs, and the architectural style of your home. If you're unsure where to start, browsing contractor profiles on HomeStars lets you find local pros who can assess your specific situation and recommend a door that fits both your practical needs and your curb appeal goals.

How secure are modern garage doors against break-ins?

Today's garage doors come with a range of security features, including rolling code technology in openers that generates a new access code with every use, making it significantly harder for would-be intruders to intercept your signal. Reinforced steel construction, robust locking mechanisms, and smart opener systems that alert you to unexpected activity add further layers of protection. Your contractor can advise on which combinations of features offer the best security for your situation.

How long should a garage door last?

A well-installed garage door can last anywhere from 15 to 30 years depending on the material, how well it's maintained, and the climate it's exposed to. You can find a garage door specialist on HomeStars who will be able to give you maintenance tips to support your garage door’s long-term durability.

What's the difference between torsion and extension springs, and does it matter?

Torsion springs are mounted horizontally above the door opening and are generally considered more durable and safer than extension springs, which run along the sides of the tracks. For most modern residential installations, torsion springs are the preferred option as they provide more balanced lifting power and tend to last longer. Your contractor can assess your garage setup and recommend the right spring system for your door size and weight.
