The nut will build calcium or limestone sediment over time, just due to splashing water. Just grab a pair of channel locks that will fit around it (you can wrap tape around the jaws to prevent ruining your beautiful chrome finish) and grab either side. Wiggle the pliers while turning, and also give it a few solid taps; you should then be able to take it off. If that doesn’t work, use some gentle heat from a heat gun or torch to loosen the calcium and expand the metal and repeat the previous steps.

Hi, To remove a stuck Delta cartridge retaining nut, I would recommend the following: Shut off the water supply first. Apply a penetrating lubricant (such as PB Blaster) around the nut and let it soak for at least 30 minutes. Gently tap around the nut with a rubber mallet to help break up mineral buildup. Use a strap wrench to turn the nut counterclockwise. This provides good grip without damaging the finish. If it still won't move, try turning it slightly clockwise first, then back counterclockwise. For heavy mineral deposits, carefully warm the nut with a hair dryer for a few minutes and try again. Avoid using excessive force with large pliers, as the nut can deform or the valve body may be damaged. Thank you.

Hey there, Zac here from Divinity Plumbing. Sometimes that ring gets pinched around the valve itself. Once that happens it’s just a little more difficult to remove. If you can’t get it off without damaging the plumbing inside the wall you are better off replacing it.
