Two Sided Sunroom added to the front of our cottage

Two Sided Sunroom Addition

We hired Rusco to install a small 10x10 sunroom on the front of our cottage in Oct 2009.
To start with the product was delayed in arriving. We thought that’s fine it wasn’t their fault.

Then they did not come to install the sunroom when we could be there. Israel said he would send his best installers & there would not be a problem.

We sent specific instructions on where we wanted our eaves trough placed. They did not read our instructions on where to place the eaves trough & drain. They came back in the Spring 2010 & tried to correct the problem but still got it wrong. We finished the job ourselves.

The first summer was fairly dry & there were no leaks. In the early spring of 2011 we had water leaking into the sunroom. We called Israel to tell him about the leak. Every time there was a hard rain we would have water coming in from where the sunroom was attached to the cottage. Finally in June Israel sent Gerry to find the problem & repair it. Gerry said he could not see any problems so he just went around & caulked all the edges where it was fastened to our building. The next rain it still leaked. We called Israel again.

This time Israel sent an independent serviceman (we will call him Bob) to access the problem & find the leak. Bob stated two areas where the problem could be coming from. One was our roof & the likely area was where they fastened the sunroom to our roof.

Israel chose to believe it was our roof & told us to fix it ourselves. He then sent us a bill for the caulking Gerry did. Which was the exact same amount of the bill that Bob sent him. We were very disappointed in Israel’s lack of responsibility.

We decided to do a water test & found the source of the leak within 10 minutes. This is something Gerry Hough should have done when he came all the way to Bobcaygeon to repair the leak. Instead he just filled every area that was attached to our building with caulking & created an unprofessional appearance. We could have done that ourselves.

We hired Bob to do the repair work. As it turned out, he was mistaken about our roof. In fact there was ice & watershield, plus protection up under the siding. He saw all this when he removed the mess from the installers. Bob also revealed the fact that they fastened the sunroom roof on top of our siding when they should have cut the siding 3” above the sunroom roof, installed a “J” molding, then flashing behind the siding & over the sunroom roof at least 4” This is why we wanted to be there when they installed it.

We offered to remove our siding before installation & Israel said not to bother that his guy’s would do it. Well they didn’t.

Bob also found out that they did not attach the sunroom roof to our cottage roof according to the Building Code. They just laid it on top of our roof & caulked the join. They should have fastened it to a 2x6 header, installed Flashing & Ice & Watershield where they attached the sunroom roof to our roof. This should have been a no brainer! This is the source of the problem where the water was coming in.

We called to let Israel know the source of the leak was caused by the fact his men did not install the sunroom to our roof according to building code. He still does not think it’s there fault. We asked him to cover the $900.00 cost for the repair (he did not know it was Bob) his response was very unprofessional. He told us it was not his problem. Quote “ Please also note that if your reputable party touched the room we installed the slightest without our permission, your warranty is null and void.” My response is WHAT WARRANTY!!!! Obviously it doesn’t cover leaks.

When we told him that Bob did the repair he said we should have called him.
Why would we call him? He told us it was not his problem & to fix it ourselves.
Now that we know it was Israel’s problem we would just like to be paid the $900.00
it cost us for the repair.

All the above can be verified by letters we have sent Rusco & professionals who have seen the workmanship of the installers.

Approximate cost of services:
$7,469.00
