Partial Basement Renovation

Tony does good work. However, his work is intermittent. After 15 months, (counted from the start of demolition, and moving forward) the project was only half finished. Before the 15-month mark, I had asked for a modest expansion to the project. After asking several times, Tony refused to provide a revised estimate and an approximate completion date. Sometime later, he left the project.

While he was on the project, Tony prided himself on getting the best price. Here is an example of his work. Tonys estimate for the following line item: carpet removal and disposal, $800. Of all the contractors and sub-contractors I spoke with after Tony left, no one estimated more than $325.

Here is another documented example of Tonys work. Of all the contractors and sub-contractors I spoke with after Tony left the project, no one estimated more than $3,400 for priming + 2 coats of paint. Tonys estimate was $3,500 for priming only!

Of the dozen or so contractors and subcontractors I spoke with after Tony left the project, all of them provided complete estimates and approximate project completion dates.

Fortunately, after Tony left the project, I was able to connect with individuals/groups who completed the second half of the project in 6 weeks.

Finally, Tony has acknowledged owing me hundreds of dollars, related to electrical work that I paid for and that was not completed. He still has not paid me back.

Please note that I modified this review to make it a little more water-tight against the string of fabrications posted by Tony in his company response.

Approximate cost of services:
$40,000.00

Company Response

Richard, while I appreciate you acknowledging we do good work, as you had in an earlier review (10/10 Richard from Toronto), you are not painting an accurate picture! As is often the case in these circumstances, there are always two sides to every story!

I did not advertise myself as a discount contractor and reminded you that we were not servicing your area any longer. You said this wasn't an issue and would accommodate our schedule since this would have been our 4th project together in over ten years.

I provided an estimate for the drywall "finishing" and priming, but you refused. Demanding a "fixed fee" for products/services that were never adequately specified or defined.

Your project was quoted, it was outside your budget, and we both regrettably engaged in a piecemeal approach. Fortunately, we were able to help with your demo, steel beam and framing.
