Interior House Painting

My wife wanted our house painted in advance of our son's 1 year birthday so we could do an open house, and after some research and a few quotes we decided to go with 5 star painting, largely a result of the excellent reviews on Homestars. Both Sohail and the design consultant were quite helpful, and the painters did a great job on the actual painting - we were quite impressed with the speed at which they did the job (2 days for a 1600 sq. foot home). The only issue we experienced were specs of paint throughout the house on our hardwood floors, which we missed during our walkthrough inspection (our fault I suppose as we were more focused on the walls). Sohail sent 2 of his guys back during the week to take care of some of the issues, roughly 2/3rds of the total problem spots, so we were only left to clean the balance ourselves instead of going over the whole house. My initial review was only a 5 out of 10, however, after posting it, Sohail came out to our house to check out the remainder of the trouble spots himself. He did not want us to have to wait for anyone to come out and finish the cleaning as his crews are quite busy, so instead he gave us $150 off the total cost for our trouble.

Company Response

Tanya is very dear to us as a customer. I have tried my best not to leave her unhappy. I am a liitle surprised myself with what happened - the crew completed the job and she was very happy afterwards and made the payment after complete inspection (no down payments are taken by us to put the customer in complete control). She got in touch the next day with some requests - these were most probably not noticeable at the time by either the client or the painters. In my contract I tell the clients that any touchup or warrenty requests can take 2-3 weeks to schedule. There is a rationale behind it: we are typically booked out for two to three weeks. When I get a service request I put it in the schedule so that proper amount of time and effort may be allocated to it. Tanya's son's birthday was coming up so she was in a hurry to get it done - I did mange to send in a couple of people the next day who arrived at her place very late at 630pm and worked for a couple of hours to get most of it done but then had to leave because it was bedtime. The next day it was not possible to arange for anyone because I had no one in the area; therefore, i went to Tanya and paid her an amount that was determined to be the cost of doing it elsewhere (1 person's full day's wage @$20/hr) so that her preprations for the birthday do not suffer in any manner. She was pretty happy and we left with a friendly hug and smile.

Interior House Painting

My wife wanted our house painted in advance of our son's 1 year birthday so we could do an open house, and after some research and a few quotes we decided to go with 5 star painting, largely a result of the excellent reviews on Homestars. Both Sohail and the design consultant were quite helpful, and the painters did a great job on the actual painting - we were quite impressed with the speed at which they did the job (2 days for a 1600 sq. foot home). The problem (and reason for my low review) is the lack of proper care the painters took before and during the job. Despite the specific wording in the contract that all areas were to be drop-clothed, we found they had nowhere near adequate coverage for the house. (My wife overheard one of the painters actually make note that they didn't have enough to cover everything, so they just decided to move them around from room to room). Unfortunately for us, after they had completed the job (and we had subsequently paid for the work) we found specs of paint throughout the house, all over our hardwood floors. Our fault for not picking this out during the walk-through perhaps, but we were more focused on finding any deficiencies on the walls. Now, I will say that they did send 2 painters over yesterday to clean our floors, however, while they told my wife and I they would be back tomorrow to finish the job, that message apparently has not been relayed back to the owners. I have also just found out that the white paint my wife requested the closets be painted in was not semi-gloss, but actually flat (clearly I don't paint often, and I didn't notice, but, the painters should have known better as they had a complete list of colours and types). In any event, we are now waiting to see if the painters actually come back today to finish cleaning, and I am hopeful that they will do the closets as well. Should this situation be resolved to our satisfaction, I will gladly post a positive follow-up, but I cannot at this time. My advice, make sure that the painters cover all floors, or it will be like pulling teeth to get a hold of someone to come back and finish the job. Or better yet, go to the dollar store and buy some plastic drop cloths to cover everything yourself. As someone paying for a service I wouldn't expect to have to go to those lengths prior to having our house painted, but live and learn I guess. As I mentioned before, the paint on the walls looks great (except for the closets now), it's the paint on the floors that's disapointing.
