Booked penguin for finish it yourself basement work. Overall extremely positive results. Work was completed in a very quick time frame (1 month from quote to finish), and the local inspector was impressed at the work, even asking why he was even there to inspect. When I contacted, I was not even aware any companies would offer a finish it yourself option, as all other quotes would only encompass start to finish ending, with time frames of 3 to 4 months, the team at Penguin offered this option and came through to an extent I was very appreciative of.

We are happy to hear you were pleased with Penguin's unfinished basement approach. Originally conceived in response to quotes we gave that were met with a "I can build it myself cheaper" that only lead to us returning to build a basement months or years later. The idea was to give the handy person a leg up on a basement build they would want to do themselves. We use our experience to help you plan the basement, and as you know, do the rough-in and dry wall. You get to determine where we stop and you start the finish.
And although this is a DIY approach, as you noted, we still put our pros on the job. And as far as we know, no one else does offer this. But as it was such a hit during Covid, we expect the competition to follow our lead once again.
