Latitude 54 Contracting

I hired Nino a year ago to do some renos in my condo: replaced carpet with hardwood flooring throughout and replaced baseboards & window trim. He did a great job, very meticulous and professional.

This year I hired Nino back as a General Contractor to do a kitchen, bathroom, and laundry room reno. He did much of the work himself, including making some custom shelving, towel racks and making a beautiful frame for a stained glass piece I had for my bathroom - see picture attached. He hired trades (electrician, plumber, counter top installers, tile workers) and arranged for everyone to do their work so that my renos were able to be completed in a very short time frame - all during COVID when trades in high demand!

Nino is a master finishing carpenter who is exceptionally skilled and professional! He is meticulous about every detail to make the trims and headers and railings and baseboards and doors etc etc look incredible! It is the first thing that people comment on when they walk into our home! Nino is a kind, honest and respectful man who takes great pride in his work and ensures that his clients are involved in every decision along the way throughout the renovation

We hired the owner of Latitude 54 after an interview; reading his reviews and looking at pictures of his work. He explained that he was a finishing carpenter and very good at the detailed work of trim, etc. The job was to replace an existing deck on a 1954 house on the North Shore of Kamloops. The joists from the deck were re-used, with three new joists added. He started the job on September 28, estimating the job would take 2 weeks, possibly 3. He let us know that he had leave town for approximately 2 weeks and may not be done before he left. We agreed to this. He just finished the job on the 24th of November.
We agreed at the onset to haul away the old deck material. We also provided all the staining and paid for the stain. Additionally, we picked up the decking as the owner did not have access to a truck. Today we cleaned up all of the wood ends and sawdust which was not discussed as a part of the arrangement. We also discovered unused decking and siding materials under a tarp in the backyard which will have to be stored properly. This was not discussed.
In summary, the deck itself is very nice. It is a very simple deck (8x20) but I am pleased with the look. The finishing is very standard - not exceptional work. It was not what I would have expected from a finishing carpenter in terms of attention to detail. I clarified with the owner at the end of the job that he is not certified as a tradesman but has 33 years experience in the work. I have to say I was frustrated by the process of getting this work completed in a timely manner. The owner is aware of our concerns as we have spoken to him a number of times and shared this feedback. (photo below is a before and after)

An example of this is the way the flooring craftsman cut and placed the engineered hardwood in the doorways, joints, and corners without mars, sloppy cuts or piecemeal work as I’ve seen others do. The entire apartment required extensive work, which included a kitchen, bathroom, living room, dining room, two bedrooms, and a laundry room. Nino completed each stage of the project in a timely, professional manner and his quotes on projected costs were always accurate. There were never any surprises during the renovations and my family was extremely satisfied with all of the services Nino provided. In the end, the apartment set a record for fetching the highest price in the apartment building’s history. I highly recommend Latitude 54.

We have used Nino for many different house projects during the past 20 years: crown moulding and baseboards, door installations, finish carpentry on bathroom and kitchen cabinetry, as well as external work, such as weatherproofing balconies, constructing a board and batten storage shed, preparing a site for a greenhouse installation, and building an entrance arbor. He is a careful craftsman and a good communicator, qualities that have been essential for our projects. His forte is wood finishing--his work is level, square, and and beautifully done. He also has good design sense and enough experience in his trade to be able to offer practical solutions to arising problems.

Nino was referred to us by a friend and colleague for reno's to our bathrooms. Having looked at some of his work and spoken to several people he did work for we employed him. The work went well and in a timely manor. The finished product is fantastic. We had some wainscoting done and the joints are seamless, a very professional job. The comments from our guests make us feel proud. All the trades were professional too.
