What makes hiring landscaping companies in Markham unique?

Local landscaping companies work across a city shaped by decades of rapid suburban growth, from the established tree-lined streets of Unionville to the larger lot developments in Cornell and Wismer. The region's clay-heavy soils and relatively flat terrain create consistent drainage challenges, and outdoor features need to be built with freeze-thaw durability in mind to hold up through cold winters and wet spring thaws, from lawn installations to structural hardscaping.

Here are a few things to consider when working on landscaping projects in Markham:

  • Clay-heavy soils: Markham's clay-heavy soils require careful grading and drainage planning to prevent water pooling and soil heaving around foundations and garden beds.
  • Lot variety: The city's mix of compact newer subdivision lots and larger established properties in areas like Unionville means landscaping plans vary significantly in scope and layout constraints.
  • Mature canopy: Older Markham neighbourhoods feature significant tree canopy that creates shaded growing conditions influencing plant selection and lawn establishment.
  • Freeze-thaw cycles: Cold winters and wet spring thaws put added stress on hardscaping materials, making proper base preparation critical for interlocking stone and retaining walls.

What to ask a Markham landscaping company before hiring?

There are a few questions that you can ask Markham landscaping companies to check that they’re the right fit for your landscape gardening needs.

The following questions can help you feel out their approach and experience and ultimately decide if they’re a good match for your project:

Are you insured and can you provide proof of liability coverage and WSIB?

Confirm active general liability insurance and Workplace Safety and Insurance Board coverage in Ontario before work begins. This protects you in case of any accidents that occur during work.

Will you obtain any required permits and are you familiar with local bylaws?

Markham has specific bylaws around site alteration and drainage that directly affect landscaping work. The City's Site Alteration By-law protects the grading swales built into residential lots, and any work that disrupts drainage patterns on lots over one acre requires a permit. Contractors should also know whether a property falls within TRCA jurisdiction, which applies to a number of Markham neighbourhoods near Rouge National Urban Park and the Little Rouge Creek corridor.

What is included in your written estimate?

A written estimate should itemize labour, materials, equipment, and disposal of soil or debris. Given Markham's clay-heavy soils, ask specifically whether soil amendment or additional drainage work is included in the quote, as these are common additional costs that can affect sod establishment, garden bed performance, and the longevity of interlocking stone installations.

What warranty or maintenance guidance do you provide after completion?

Markham's freeze-thaw cycles put particular stress on interlocking stone and retaining walls, so ask what is covered if settling or shifting occurs in the first year or two after installation. For plantings and sod, confirm whether the warranty accounts for Markham's heavier soils, which can affect drainage and root establishment differently than sandier growing conditions found elsewhere in the GTA.

Does your work account for Markham's lot grading requirements in newer subdivisions?

If you live in one of Markham's newer developments in areas like Cornell, Wismer, and Cathedraltown, these areas have strict lot grading conditions tied to subdivision agreements. Contractors working in these neighbourhoods should understand how proposed landscaping changes interact with approved grading plans, as alterations that affect neighbouring drainage can trigger compliance issues with the City's Engineering Department.

Are you familiar with working around mature trees in older Markham neighbourhoods?

In established areas like Unionville and Markham Village, mature tree canopy is common and tree protection requirements can affect where grading, digging, and hardscaping work can take place. Ask whether the contractor has experience working within root protection zones and whether they will confirm tree permit requirements with the City before breaking ground.

FAQ: Common questions about landscaping services in Markham

How long do landscaping projects in Markham typically take?

Smaller jobs like garden bed installation or sod laying can often be completed within a few days, while more involved work such as interlocking stone driveways, full yard regrading, or multi-phase landscape designs can take several weeks. Soil preparation in Markham can also add time, particularly where clay-heavy ground requires amendment before sod or planting work can begin. Homeowners can use HomeStars to compare availability and find landscaping pros in Markham that fit their schedule.

Can Markham landscaping companies handle both hardscaping and softscaping?

Many landscaping companies in Markham offer both, combining structural work like interlocking patios, walkways, and garden edging with softscape services such as lawn installation, planting design, and garden bed creation. Coordinating both through one contractor is particularly useful in Markham, where clay soils and drainage considerations need to be factored into both the structural and planting elements of a project.

Do I need a permit to build a gate or fence in Markham?

In Markham, fence installations must comply with the City's fencing by-law, which sets out rules around height, placement, and sightline requirements depending on your lot and location within a subdivision. Homeowners in newer developments should also confirm whether their subdivision agreement includes any additional fencing conditions set out by the original developer. You can find a fence and gate specialist near you through HomeStars to help confirm local requirements before work begins.

How do landscapers in Markham handle unexpected weather delays?

Spring and fall projects are most commonly affected, as heavy rain can delay excavation and grading work, while early frost limits the window for sod establishment and interlocking stone installation. Contractors typically phase or pause work around significant weather events to protect materials and ensure proper curing and settlement. Homeowners can use HomeStars to find Markham landscaping companies that are upfront about scheduling and communicate clearly when timelines shift.

Are there landscaping restrictions for properties near Rouge National Urban Park?

Properties bordering Rouge National Urban Park or adjacent watercourses may be subject to TRCA permits and development restrictions. Work involving grading, planting near watercourses, or removal of vegetation in these areas may require review and approval before a contractor can begin. Confirming jurisdiction early in the planning process can prevent delays once a project is underway.

Can I landscape over or around buried utilities on my Markham property?

Before any digging begins, contractors should locate buried utilities including gas lines, water mains, and electrical conduits through Ontario One Call, which provides free locates for residential properties. This is particularly relevant in Markham's newer subdivisions where utility infrastructure is more densely laid out beneath driveways, front yards, and boulevard areas. Homeowners should confirm that their contractor requests locates before breaking ground, as disturbing buried lines can result in service disruptions, safety hazards, and liability.
