From initial visit and conversation at the company store location through the sales support on site and then all the way to installation and follow-up, Canco has been everything I would expect in a company that is local and builds its' reputation through customer satisfaction. Thanks to Will and the full Canco team.

Having lived with this deck for several years now, I have to write a review of the company’s work since I will be replacing the deck soon and writing off my cost on having the current deck built. The problem is with both the foundation of the deck and with the surface. I paid for cedar and got some very shabby boards. The boards were not spaced and are butted right up against each other and so rain water and snow melt have nowwhere to go. The foundation causes the water to run toward the house and pool be the door and mist be squeegeed away after every rainfall. When complaining about this I have been told that the boards would shrink down over time and that then the water would have a place to go. Well apparently these boards decided to expand over time creating an even bigger moisture retention problem. Go figure. That’s what I said would happen but was told this was not true. Evidence is in the result. This complaint does not include details of other problems along the way like unsafe steps that were collapsing and had to be repaired after the first few weeks of installation.

Company Response

Hi
I'm not sure who this is but I do not remember a problem with a deck we could not resolve.
If you contact me I would like to see what your problem is and resolve it.
If there was a problem with the cedar it has a warranty from the manufacturer and could have been replaced at no charge within 2 years.
Please call

After discovery of a rather large wasp nest in between inner wall and siding, I called a few places for estimates. Peter got back to me right away and promised to be at our home first thing next day. When he arrived he checked the situation, explained his process and next steps and then proceeded to deal with the issue. The wall was alive with a buzzing sound for a couple of hours following the treatment. Peter indicated what would happen over the next couple of days and what he would do if there were continuing issues. The problem has been taken care of and that particular wasp site has been dealt with. A potential problem in another smaller area was also managed so that we will not have a problem in future. Thanks very much to Peter and to his summer helper.

I have had windows replaced in two homes and have hired Keldan both times. The first job was not a major job, but the company handled the work very efficiently and with fair pricing. The best sign of service from the original job was that there was an error that resulted in one piece of a window not fitting properly. The Keldan team took full responsibility and rectified the issues efficiently and with fantastic levels of service. It probably cost them more than they were making on the job, but there was no question about our satisfaction. When we brought them in to our latest house, it was with the knowledge that they would provide solid support at each stage. In this house we wanted to replace all of the windows. All stages of the process were pleasurable. The costs were consistent with other quotes we received and we really feel we got value for our money.

I previously had this company do a job on the previous house where I lived and was very happy with the work and the service. However, when I had them quote on the job for a house we moved into recently, the salesperson did not fully communicate, in my opinion. To be fair, his opinion is different. The problem came with the replacement of the fascia. I had discussed this as part of the job, since we were moving from brown eavestrough and fascia to white. When he quoted the job he indicated the change of eavestrough. I assumed this included changing everything to white. When I arrive home after the job was done, I was somewhat surprised to see white eavestrough on brown fascia. We had a conversation and the salesman was not very helpful in resolving the situation, placing the entire blame for the issue on me. I was willing to take some of the blame but not all of it. I was also willing to pay a fair price to rectify the situation. They would only come back and do the job for an additional $1000. I found another company who did the job for $600. Also, Cancro did not complete the proper number of downspouts according to the contract. They would only refund me $50 for the incomplete work and I know if I had to pay someone to add a downspout that I would likely be charged more than $50. Company attitude was very poor on this one and they lost my business for a complete siding changeover. The eavestrough has not really worked properly since installation as there are low points that collect water. I will likely have to have the whole job redone in a few years and I know which company will not be involved. The guys who did the fascia work will be at the top of my list as they were polite, reasonable in terms of price and quite knowledgable. They were able to point out a number of issues with Cancro's work including the disbelief that anyone would complete a project that left brown fascia under the new white eavestrough.

What could this company do to improve their services?
Communicate and look at the complete project as well as improve the quality of the work.
Any advice to offer fellow homeowners facing a similar project?
Check this database for the kinds of references that contractors don't readily provide. It's easy to provide a positive reference but how willing are they to share their mistakes and talk about how they have worked with the client to correct any "challenges". This to me is the mark of a really good company... they will acknowledge the problems they run into and then share their methodology for resolving issues. I have worked with some really good companies who have worked in this way and I do not hesitate to recommend them. I will make other entries in this database about the positive vendors I have worked with.

While we ended up "mostly" satisfied with the results, we ended up paying way beyond the relative value for what we got, in comparison to other work done and estimates received. Workers were nice people but I have had much better quality and have paid a lot less for similar renovations in past homes. Kitchen floor (20" porcelain tiles) was not laid straight and we have to live with the results. 20" is hard to work with, and we had contractor remove 4 of the worst tiles and relay, but there are still many uneven areas. Also, be careful of "additional work" that is tacked on. I came home one day to discover I was being charged for electrical work that had not been agreed upon. Whether there was a problem with wiring or not, I needed the choice of who to work with on my electrical issues. I already had an electrician doing work at lower cost than what I was charged. I didn't argue the point because there were other things I needed arguing energy for. I should have argued that point and a few others. However, when in renovation land, one often feels a hostage in their own home. 2020 update... we still look at the floor, the ceiling, the poor workmanship overall and every day we lament our decision to have this company do the work. We will soon be ripping all of his work out and starting over again. Waste of 30K and daily frustration to add to the experience. Not sure where this company is or what they are doing in 2020, but I really hope they have developed some skills along the way and that their team have developed some better skills. Sorry for anyone else who has suffered in the same way and it sounds like there are many.

Check references carefully and be prepared to stand up to contractors and demand what you believe you agreed to. Get things in writing to your satisfaction, not just the contractors.
