We hired Mike and his team earlier this year to complete the finishin work for our newly underpinned basement. From our very first interaction we were extremely impressed by Sonoma. Mike is an exceptional communicator; and very customer service focused. He was always quick to respond and was a very big help in assisting us with both trouble-shooting and in stretching our budget dollars. Of all the trades we have ever worked with (third major house renovated) Sonoma sets the standard that all general contractors should try to achieve both in ease to do business with AND quality of work. We especially appreciated the very detailed quote (which was managed on budget), the diligence to stay on schedule, and superior calibre of sub-trades. We would without any hesitation refer Sonoma for any basement renovation.

We hired True North Underpinning earlier this year for the excavation and underpinning of our 120 year old victorian row house in Leslieville to create 8" ceilings. The company came in towards the higher end of the quotes we received; and in this case we believe that we got what we paid for and are very happy with our decision. The job turned out to be much more complex than anticipated due to major structural issues uncovered during the excavation; and throughout Daniel and his team took the time to explain our options and worked closely with our engineer on creative solutions that minimized impact to our adjacent neighbor (party wall). We should note that this was also an unusual job for the team too in that we have an infant (was 4 months when job started) so were home much of the day while the crew was working. At all times the crew was exceptionally respectful and polite - going out of their way to cause as little disruption as possible. Daniel even went so far as to bring by a window air conditioning unit for the time we were without HVAC. He is a real jem! While the job did take longer than anticipated, the True North team held true to their original budget. They really made sure the job was completed right and we would not hesitate to refer them to friends - in fact we already have and hope they are as pleased as we are with their service.

Would note that although "technically" laundry could have stayed hooked up while the work was completed, in all reality this was not an option due to the sheer mess of the job. Just something to keep in mind when embarking on a similar job in the event laundry is located in the basement. We would also recommend receiving two independent engineering assessments if structural integrity is questionable at the get go. Doing so in advance could have helped us anticipate what was to come.

Company Response

Hey Heather and Jole,

Enjoyed uncovering what "was" the structural wonder of your basement. We hope you guys enjoy what now "is" a solid, deep and functional space. Jole got his gym after all. Thanks for the great review. Cheers.

We got Geraldo's name from our lighting supplier and he definitely was great to work with. Was flexible with his time, creative with his solutions, and when a down rod was too long he took it upon himself to get us the right materials to finish the job (that required a seperate trip on his part). We would not hesitate to use him again!
