Bathroom cork floor, new fan, new trim, plaster and repaint.

The bathroom was a disaster... floor ceramic tiles not glued down, grout popping out, cold in winter, plaster damage on ceiling... just a mess. John Oborne's team (Colin Murray and Troy Ellis) tackled the problems. They drilled out the 3 inches of concrete under the tiles, and installed a beautiful cork floor. They determined that a faulty fan install was the cause of the water damage, replaced the fan, insulated it, and vented it properly thru the roof. The finishing touch was a beautiful trim, plaster, and paint job that exceeded all expectations. In addition, Colin determined that my toilet was not properly installed (hence the slight rocking problem) and corrected that issue as well. The guys were terrific and the bathroom is beautiful. If you want a team of friendly professionals, give Cathy Martin at Oborne Contracting a call. They are worth it!

    Basement Apartment Renovation

When we were searching for a house back in 2009 one of the keys for us was a liveable basement for my mother. The house we ended up with had this, but it did need work, including the kitchen area, cabinets and floors in the basement. Enter 2010 and we really started to get going on this. after a few disaster DIY attempts my wife and I decided to begin the search for a professional. We stumbled upon Homestars and began our search. Oborne Contracting consistently had great reviews and we eventually selected them to complete the work on the basement. This work included (in about 500 sq. ft) new laminate flooring, brand new baseboards, kitchen gutting and reno of counter cabinets, sink and additional upper cabinets. Everything was explained, price was right and we were on our way. The whole job took almost 2 weeks and by the time all was said and done we were left with an excellent space for my mother and eventually (if she decides to move out) a definite studio apartment income property. I have to say I never actually met John or any of the contractors as I did all the leg work over the phone and by email. This is always worrisome as you have to trust. But I was never let down and they treated my mother tremendously everyday that they were here! Thank you John and crew!

Thank you for the kind words Greg. Hope your Mother enjoys her new space. Perhaps one day we will have the pleasure of meeting you as well. Regards John Oborne

    Hardwood Floors for Living Room

We had previously worked with Oborne for our kitchen backsplash last year and were thoroughly impressed with the workmanship and promised days for completion. This year's project was to change our dreadful builder grade carpet in our living room to hardwood flooring. Dean arrived to take the measurements and went over what the job included. Although the estimate from Oborne was a bit higher than other places, we knew that with this company, you get what you what you pay for. They promised that it'd take 2 days, and it took exactly that. Dean and Kent did a wonderful job, and the floors look great. Not only is the workmanship great, it feels good to work with the people at Oborne, because they are friendly, explain exactly what they're going to do, and always ensures that we're happy with the work. Would definitely work with them for future projects, and highly recommend to anyone who would like the job done right the first time.

    Bathroom & Laundry Centre Renovation

We hired Oborne Contracting after interviewing several contractors, and immediately appreciated the professionalism John displayed. He had thoughtful ideas on how to improve a dark builder grade bathroom into a beautiful, useful and inviting space. Damian managed the site with Colin on a daily basis, and was a treat to have coordinating the project. Damian even looked out for us when our kitchen counters were installed by a supplier, to ensure that they took our needs into consideration. We have gained such a trust in Oborne Contracting that as we searched for a new house, we contacted John to help us evaluate what work needed to be done, and he was ready to jump on board, and help us even in the due diligence stage. We would recommend Oborne Contracting to our friends, and the greatest testament of all, we would absolutely use them again in any of our renovation needs.

Bathroom renovations and construction of laundry closet

After purchasing a home in need of a facelift, we interviewed a number of contractors to review our renovation wish list and quote on our first major project: the master en-suite. While all the contractors came well referred, John seemed to be the most thoughtful in terms of providing suggestions and alternatives that would allow us to achieve our goals but also keep cost in mind. He provided a detailed quote in a timely manner, offered to introduce us to all the team that would work on the project and generally seemed to value his reputation in the market and the satisfaction of his past and future clients. He also introduced us to a number of his trades (paint, carpet) so that we could work with them directly and thereby avoid his fees for managing them. Based on his professionalism, portfolio and personality we selected him as our contractor. When we had him come back for the final quote, we liked some of his ideas so much that we expanded the project scope beyond the remodel of the master bath to include construction of a laundry closet upstairs, re-carpeting of the house, addition of some pot lights, and removal of a stipple ceiling. As the project continued, we then went a step further and add re-facing of a fireplace, updating of the powder room, repainting of almost the entire interior, a gut and rebuild of a second upstairs bathroom and replacement of our front door. Not surprisingly, what began as a 2.5 month job ended up taking 5 months but not for lack of effort and commitment. I’ve worked with contractors in the past who would show up for one week, then disappear for the next. We had a crew of 2 to 6 guys working 7 days a week from 7:30am to 5:30pm, stopping only for the holidays. Damian, the site supervisor, was incredible – extremely helpful and easy-going. He kept us apprised of what was going on every day, answered any questions we had and cared a lot about the work and our satisfaction. Colin and the rest of the crew were great to work with too, but Damian really was exceptional. If you’re going to work with Oborne, I would recommend you request Damian and you won’t be disappointed. As with all renovations, the project had its ups and downs and a few bumps along the road. We came home to a few unexpected holes in walls and ceilings as well as some items that weren’t quite done right or the way we expected. To their credit, though, all of these minor problems (which never seem so minor at the time) were resolved quickly and ultimately the finished product was of extremely high quality. The workmanship was great and the attention to detail beyond reproach. We love what they did and would recommend them to anyone looking for a top quality, dependable contractor who really cares about their clients’ satisfaction.

Garage squirrel eviction, and eaves & window upgrade.

It's tough to find a contractor willing to take on a smaller job... especially a really ugly one like mine, where squirrels had taken over my detached garage. John Oborne stepped up: showed up when he said he would, coordinated the removal of the squirrels and damaged eaves, planned a 2 week gap in the work so I could chase the squirrels out of the garage to ensure they wouldn't chew thru the rebuild, and then, once the squirrels had moved elsewhere, managed the installation of the new eaves and siding, and of a beautiful new window. It was a pleasure, and a relief, working with John and his team. You can count on them.

    Home Show booth

John and Colin have helped HomeStars set up and break down in our two home shows - Toronto and Hamilton. I'd like to thank them again for their help and making our shows a success. Trustworthy, reliable, punctual are the first words that come to my mind in describing Oborne - they are terrific to work with and a well run organization. There's a reason they are a Best of HomeStars company. Thanks again for all your support!

    Basement Build

They say the only person who can do a basement renovation the right way is yourself. If you're like me, you lack the time, the skill, the patience, the tools, and resources to pull this off. My wife and I interviewed 8 companies for our basement reno. Oborne was the first (we went by the reviews on this site). After the fifth or sixth interview we knew we had to call Oborne back. No other company showed the professionalism that they did. This was a major factor in our decision; we wanted peace of mind. Oborne wasn't the cheapest but you pay for what you get. And you get a lot from Oborne. From David Livingstone, the first face we met and Oborne's senior estimator. His proposal skills are detailed, leaving very little to question. Then there's Ken. You want Ken on your project because he's the epitome of patience. He's always 2 steps ahead of you and has this reassuring Scottish wit about him. Plus he's the equivalent of a triple black belt kung fu master in the world of carpentry. He can build pretty much anything with wood and nails. Troy was the apprentice. Not from the TV show but from an actual program with Ontario's trade program that Oborne participates in. It's a learning experience, and if the apprentice messes something up Ken is there is to make sure it doesn't happen again. Nothing slips past Ken. Colin is the site supervisor who would come by on occasion to make sure everything was running tick a tee boo. He's a ninja warrior... comes in and out sometimes without you knowing it. But I'm sure he has a lot to do with how things just run so smoothly all the time. And last, there's John Oborne. Professional. Approachable. Caring. Enthusiastic. Inspiring. Dedicated. For example, when I discovered that a cable in my home entertainment system was accidentally damaged by the dry wallers John came running over, even though he was in the middle of his son's hockey game. If you want your project done, choose your vendor wisely. If you want your project done right, there's no better option than Oborne.
