Our air conditioner broke down and we decided to purchase a new one. We met Hamid from Enercare who presented himself as an engineer, experienced in installation etc. We signed a contract and scheduled the installation of new air conditioner, furnace and a larger water heater for Friday Sept 22nd. We knew that a heat wave was coming and wanted to ensure the job was done as soon as possible. The installation crew showed up on time but advised us that the installation could not proceed due to space limitations, proximity to a shower etc. The space used for our current air conditioner was not sufficient for the new one and our current water heater was going to be red –flagged as it is too close to a shower. Apparently we had no choice but to move to a tank-less water heater with a monthly cost of $30 more per month. The water heather that Enercare had installed just a few years earlier was now apparently so dangerous it has to be removed (we hadn’t made any changes to our house since the installation). Hamid also advised that they now needed additional equipment to install the air conditioner which may cost more. He couldn’t tell us how much that would be until they did further inspections but repeatedly told us how they had to rent expensive equipment etc. but we had to commit to proceed if we wanted the installation to happen the following Monday. The funny thing is that they are supposed to have a guarantee that installation costs will not change etc. Also I now had to take an additional 2 days off of work as this was now going to be a 2 day job. 3 days off work to get a new air conditioner seems ridiculous to me. When I told Hamid how frustrated I was, he never apologized, was extremely rude and refused to provide any escalation process after repeated requests. He went so far as to say “I am just a sales guy, I don’t know about installation guidelines”, “I can’t do anything for you, you have to talk to a manager” however he also said, “the mangers don’t have time for customers”, and “managers don’t want to talk to customers”, “nobody is going to do anything for you, this happens all the time”. I called the customer service line and asked for this to be escalated and nobody called back. Over the weekend it was 40 degrees with the humidex and Hamid, while telling me I was putting my children’s lives in danger with my current water heather, began threatening to cancel the deal altogether as it was “too difficult” and he was not going to make enough commission. He said we should have known all of this as we have an older house. You would think that the sales rep should have a basic understanding of the clearance required to install an air conditioner and could have seen this coming. Also, working in Toronto one should have some experience with older homes. Why are we expected to be the experts? They then installed the water heater without a proper outlet and told us an electrician would call us. That didn’t happen. When we called to follow up and make the appointment for the outlet and the duct cleaning we were told that there was no record of the free duct cleaning. Then we somehow were disconnected. We finally made an appointment for an electrician to come to the house and instead they sent a technician that couldn’t do the installation. So 3 weeks later we still don’t have an outlet and no record of the free duct cleaning we were promised. I have called to escalate a number of times and they always say that there are no managers available. We have never received a call back from the mangers that they apparently e-mail with each call. Incredibly frustrating, we will never deal with them again as they make every step VERY difficult and constantly mislead their customers.
