Garage Roof Repairs and Re-shingled

AMAZING WORK AT A REASONABLE PRICE I hired a general contractor that was working at my neighbours to work on my side of our shared roof. After getting the higher than expected quote I agreed to go with him since my neighbour had been using him for other jobs. With countless delays in getting the job started and the contractor coming back to me to add an additional $1500 to the quote I tapped out and cancelled the job. That is when I contacted Amilcar. Amilcar met with me the day after calling him to give the quote. He could complete my job at a 1/3 or what I was quoted by the original contractor. On the day the work was to be completed Amilcar and his team got right to work. He stuck to his quoted price and provided some extra that wasn't expected on the facia and soffit. He also pointed out some problems that I had with my 100 year+ garage and suggested some minor fixes I could do on my own - I respected that he didn't try to hide these problems. His team were all professionals and worked diligently to get the job done to my satisfaction. The clean up was amazing; like they were never here. I'm so happy with the results that I want Amilcar and his team back in the spring to work on the roof of my house.

    Rerouting of Eavestrough

Almicar and the guys did a Great job! We had an emergency leak, and they came THAT day to assess and the next day to get the job done. Best quote we could find, and a perfectly completed job done :)

    New Build

oxxo roofing did a terrific job on our new roof - although a steep roof and a bit of a challenge Almicar was able to complete the work within the desired timeframe and on budget. They were Lalso helpful during the roofing material selection process and offered many suggestions for further improvements. They were easy and a pleasure to work with and answered my calls within a few hours if not sooner - i would recommend them for your roofing needs and would use them again.

    Repairing Leaks, Removing parapet, Eavestroughing

This is the second time that I have used OXXO Roofing. Amilcar and his crew are always personable, efficient, honest, and tidy. They repaired our roof a few years ago, but raccoons had come by recently and damaged the fabulous work that they had done - Amilcar came by and fixed the holes the raccoons had made for free. We had a awkwardly designed parapet on our house that was causing some problems, and we had OXXO remove the parapet and add some eavestroughing to the house. They did a fabulous job. I would recommend this crew to anyone. They are great.

    Replacement shingle roof.

Have used them in the past and will continue to do so. On the most recent job, when the shingles they were installing on a portion of our roof didn't match the manufacturer's documentation, they took the time and energy to find an acceptable replacement. Very impressed once again. Highly recommended.

    shingle replacement

Oxxo replaced our roof last fall. They were very busy at the time so it took a while and instead of Amilcar and Cris doing the all the reshingling themselves, they used their crew that normally only takes the old shingles off for some of it. After it was done I noticed several uneven spots, places where the shingles didn't lay flat, etc. He said that was normal given the cold temperatures and that will change when it gets hot again. While I can understand that, this problem didn't change much over the summer. However, the real problem was that the roof leaked several times. The roof leaked after the first big rainstorm so I asked him to come take a look. They put down some extra caulking and flashing but instead of using real painted flashing he used some scrap aluminum (I assume because it was high up where people can't normally see). The following spring we had another small leak and then a big leak that ruined a decent section of drywall. I was furious and he finally decided to redo that quarter of the roof. I redid the drywall myself although he said he could give me a contractor. We made it through most of this summer fine but a couple weeks ago we had another big storm and a significant amount of water came down through one of the vents he installed for a our bathroom fan. I've decided not to call back. I'm tired of the problem happening again and again. So on the plus side, Oxxo stuck to their quote, did a good job with cleanup, and always came back to fix the leaks for free. On the negative side they did a rush job and obviously didn't do it properly and I regret that we went with them. When it warms up again I will be replacing Oxxo's vents myself.

    garage flat roof replacement

Summary: I believe that Amilcar and his crew want to do a good job but they made some mistakes and, originally, I had some trouble getting them to stand behind their work once paid. In the end, they do seem to have fixed all the leaks.
Details (written Nov, 2010):
Things started off well with Oxxo. Their quote was about $1000 cheaper than the next cheapest and I found Amilcar very friendly and easy to deal with. The price difference made me a bit nervous but Amilcar explained that as their business was new, they had to charge less than others in order to attract customers.
My office overlooks the garage so I was able to watch the crew do a lot of the work and to my untrained eye, it seemed like they were doing a good job. However, now I know that they did make mistakes.
I noticed the first problem right away. Amilcar had promised to slope the roof so that it would drain well after a rain and they did that but there were two spots with large puddles that weren't draining properly. That turned out to be caused by the top of the existing drain pipe being a couple of centimeters higher than the roof. That wasn't their fault but a good roofer would have noticed the problem and fixed it before putting the bitument on top. However, we talked about the situation and considered various solutions and he was able to almost completely solve the problem by digging out from under the metal cap of the drain pipe, pulling it down and screwing the side of it to the wall to hold it in place. At that point, I paid 90% of the bill.
I can't remember the exact sequence of events but I believe it was at the next heavy rainfall, I noticed that the roof was leaking at almost exactly the same spot as before, although not as badly. I called Amilcar and he surmised that he just needed to caulk the area around the drainpipe and came over to do that fairly soon. I couldn't test the repair right away because it had to dry but a few days later, I went up with a hose and sprayed all over the roof, only to find that it was still leaking. A little later, I narrowed down the location of the leak to one small area. Over the next 6-8 months, I called Amilcar 4-5 times and left messages but he never answered the phone or returned the call. So, in October, I left a message threatening a bad review and possible legal action, but still got no response.
Update (December, 2010):
A day after this review was originally published (saying pretty much what you see above but with no response from them), Amilcar called to apologize for not getting back to me and explained that he has been away for months dealing with an urgent family matter (which I won't go into here). In my opinion, the family issue may have justified not being able to work on my roof but it doesn't justify not returning calls.
Anyway, Amilcar showed up today and surmised that the roof was leaking mostly at the nail holes so he patched all those, and more, with plastic cement. He said that if that doesn't work, he'll come back and torch on a patch. I'm not thrilled that my new roof has to be patched already but at least now he seems committed to keep working on it until there are no more leaks.
Update (June 2011):
Amilcar's attempts at patching the roof with plastic cement were unsuccessful and then the snow came and he couldn't do anything. In spring, about a month ago, he came back, ripped out a small section of the bitumen and torched down a new piece. I'm not 100% sure but I think that finally fixed the problem. When I felt the underside of the roof after the last heavy rain, it was completely dry and I have not seen water dripping since then.
