My elderly relative has been using an oil furnace for 20+ years. I finally convinced him to switch to gas. We met with Boris, the owner in November 2010. He came, took measurements, explained all the options and gave us a quote. Seeing that my uncle was an older gentleman and worried that he may be tight on money, he did not push him to replace the air condition at the same time, in fact he tried to give him reasons why he didn't have to (the air conditioner was 20+ years old but still working). We decided to do both. Boris gave us everything in writing, said we did not have to leave a deposit! He told us to get back to him once the gas was installed by embridge (there were no gas lines to the house). Embridge finally installed the gas lines February 2011. I called Boris to let him know the meter was installed. He arranged to come the very next day as he had an opening in the schedule. The crew of 5 arrived on time. I was not there to supervise at first but by the time I arrived everything was running smoothly. They put drop sheets down everywhere (even though the floors are old and worn). The job was completed exactly when promised, they finished by 6pm. They cleaned up everything and left nothing behind. Boris called later that night to check that Enbridge gas had come to turn on the gas and complete the inspection. About a week later he called and advised he was having an independent electrician come over to the house to check the electrical and give it an inspection so there would be no doubts. He filed the rebate for my uncle immediately and even helped arrange an energy audit that week to make sure he got his rebate as quickly as possible. I can't say enough good things about the whole process. From the quote to the finished product and the professional crew, there were no problems along the way. The job site was very clean. I was impressed.
In fact, I wish I had found him through homestars about a year earlier. That winter the furnace at my house had failed and I went with one of the big name companies from a flyer in the newspaper. The price was good but when it came to the job, there were all sorts of problems, delays and surprise surprise: Extra unforseen costs. They had quoted the job over the phone, said there could be no unforseen hidden problems but then the installer said he had to charge extra for moving duct work. The furnace is a Yorx brand, on of the top of the line models, but runs at least twice as loud as the Goodman Boris installed. I learned my lesson and will be more careful with my own installation next time. In fact if Boris is around, I will definately be a repeat customer.
