Enercare (previously Direct Energy) offers protection plans and maintenance plans. I was sold a maintenance plan for my gas fireplace at $14/month with taxes, on top of my protection plan for the furnace and air conditioner.
The name "maintenance plan" is misleading. It should really be called an "inspection plan". For $168 / year, the technician is authorized to look at the fireplace, to see if everything is ok. I wanted him to tell me what was wrong with the igniter, but I was told that this would require an appointment, with a minimum charge of over $100 and that parts would be on top of that. I could not get the technician to do anything more than stare at my fireplace with his arms crossed over his chest. I called Direct Energy and I was told that this is exactly what I paid for. I asked to cancel the Fireplace Maintenance Plan, but I was told that I had a contract until the end of the year. Once the plan expired, I took my business elsewhere.
The protection plan is pretty much what it says (they perform maintenance or repairs on the furnace and air conditioner), although the quality of the technicians varies considerably from visit to visit. I got better consistent service elsewhere.
